The Elf Journey In The Western Fantasy World-Chapter 163: The Fields of Change
Chapter 163: The Fields of Change
Otherwise, with a personality like his, he would’ve already been sold off somewhere—still counting the money for the people who betrayed him.
Since the Demon King was tight-lipped and his subordinates were equally secretive, Illiya knew there was no point asking questions.
He could only follow them until they reached their destination.
He had no idea what kind of strange medicine they were trying to sell in this gourd.
Having made up his mind, Illiya gave up on the idea of slipping away and simply followed them forward.
Fortunately, the journey wasn’t very long. Before much time had passed, Anos stopped. And because he was being pulled along by the sleeve, Illiya stopped too.
He didn’t understand why they’d come to a halt in this place.
Illiya quietly began surveying the surroundings. Along the way, he realized he had never been through this area before. The environment around them also felt unfamiliar. Could there be something shady going on here?
But he quickly dismissed that thought—because he could sense a strong presence of wood elemental energy in the air.
That didn’t make sense.
Logically speaking, the environment in the Demon Realm shouldn’t be able to produce such rich wood elemental energy. Yet here, the air was filled with it.
It was absolutely unnatural.
But when Illiya finally saw the scene in front of him clearly, he immediately understood why there was such an abundance of wood element in this desolate place.
They were growing plants.
The more plants you cultivate, the more concentrated the wood element becomes in the surrounding air. It was that simple.
Anos spoke with excitement, "Today I brought you here to see my experimental field. I’ve been searching for a good spot for a long time, and I finally managed to find this place just a little while ago."
Illiya didn’t immediately ask any follow-up questions. He chose to remain silent for now and wait to hear what the Demon King had to say next.
"I’m sure you know, Illiya, that the Demon Realm’s environment is quite different compared to the rest of the continent. While our realm is rich in mineral resources, years of neglect—and the damage caused by war—have left our land severely barren."
"Actually, the land in the Demon Realm used to be very fertile," Anos said. "It was perfectly suitable for growing crops. But clearly, the people of the Demon Realm never had that awareness. What I want to do now is awaken that awareness in them—only then can the environment of the Demon Realm gradually begin to improve."
Illiya didn’t respond. He understood that the Demon King didn’t expect a reply—he just wanted someone to talk to.
And a truly successful listening machine didn’t need to speak.
Just like Illiya at that very moment.
But he didn’t feel any resentment over it. On the contrary, he even felt a strange sense of contentment.
After all, no one really enjoyed talking all the time. The less he had to speak, the better.
That had always been a core belief of the elven race.
Although he didn’t actually know where that principle came from, he had grown up among elves and heard such sayings constantly—whether they were true or not, who knew?
Adults loved to lie, and as a minor, Illiya naturally couldn’t tell whether these sly old folks were telling the truth or not.
Then again, using the term "sly old foxes" to describe elves... wasn’t entirely wrong.
Illiya shook his head, brushing away the sudden flash of thoughts that had passed through his mind. What mattered most now was examining the Demon Realm’s experimental farmland.
"May I take a closer look?" he asked.
Mainly because he wasn’t sure if this farmland was a sensitive subject in the Demon Realm or something that needed to be kept secret.
Anos readily agreed to his request. "Of course, that’s not a problem. I never planned to keep it hidden for long anyway. And besides, this is the result of my efforts—why would I want to keep my own achievements a secret?"
When he spoke that final sentence, a trace of pride finally appeared on Anos’s face—the kind of expression befitting someone his age.
Illiya didn’t comment on it, but he was pleased to see the change.
People should do what suits their age, even if they’ve become a king. That truth doesn’t change.
Suppressing one’s nature isn’t good for personal growth.
With the Demon King’s permission, Illiya began walking toward the experimental field.
As he got closer, the scene that unfolded before him left him speechless.
High-ranking demons in shorts and t-shirts stood at the edge of the fields, directing others. Mid-ranking demons were using magic to operate strange-looking machines to till the soil. Low-ranking demons, drenched in sweat, wielded human farming tools as they worked hard building houses and paving roads. freeweɓnøvel~com
If someone didn’t know any better, they’d think a whole city was being constructed here.
Fortunately, Illiya did know better. He was aware that demons had a strong territorial instinct. Once they staked out a place as their own, they wouldn’t lay claim to anyone else’s territory. As long as you didn’t try to take theirs, they wouldn’t retaliate.
That had always been a foundational rule of survival for the demon race.
Which was why he found it strange—they already had cities of their own, so why were they building things here?
And they were even paving roads. Illiya just couldn’t wrap his head around it.
Even if they were preparing to cultivate this land... was it really necessary to build roads like this?
Anos also noticed Illiya’s confusion and awkwardly explained, "You’re confused too, right? Honestly, I don’t understand it myself. Why would we need to pave roads just to reclaim a plot of barren land? The roads they’re building are just like the ones inside the Demon Palace. If someone saw this without context, they’d think we were building a city here. I even tried to stop them—but I was overruled."
