Chapter 83: Thread of Fate

"Then who did it?" asked Leon.

Agares fell silent. He poured beer from the bottle into two glass mugs provided, one for himself and one for Leon.

The two of them enjoyed the drink, sitting on the balcony table chairs while watching outside, watching the townspeople working together to repair the wall of a house damaged by the bald man.

"Soldiers of the Caer Vireth Kingdom!"

"Why are you so sure?" asked Leon.

"I heard it myself, from those who looted the villagers’ belongings and raped the women in the village."

"Really?"

"Yes. I killed them on the spot," replied Agares, sipping the drink from his shot glass, "I left them lying there."

Leon was taken aback. If what Agares said was true, then the five corpses he found four months ago were likely the same soldiers killed by Agares.

Slowly, Leon obtained the information he was looking for. He only needed to ask Agares and match his words with what he had found.

"Weren’t there three crucifix poles and one gallows there?" asked Leon.

Agares stiffened and fell silent, right when he was about to take another sip of beer. His gaze was locked forward, eyes glaring sharply, wondering how Leon knew about that.

"How do you—"

"Those three crosses and the one gallows were toppled, like someone had cut them down."

The man before Leon gave a faint smile, then continued drinking and ended their conversation.

He didn’t want to hear about those crosses again; hearing them reminded Agares of the deaths of the Nadia family and Priestess Ara.

"Do you know anything about—"

"There’s nothing more I can tell you. Excuse me."

Agares stood and walked toward the stairs leading to the lower floor of the tavern. Leon stood up and tried to stop him.

However, Agares’s steps halted when he saw Cassandra and Anna standing at the top of the stairs, eavesdropping on their conversation.

Even so, Agares didn’t care. He resumed walking down the stairs and exited the tavern. Cassandra broke free from Anna’s grasp and ran after Agares, clutching her magic staff.

"I don’t know who’s telling the truth, you or the Caer Vireth Kingdom. But if you have any information about my family, please tell me," said Cassandra, crying in the middle of the street while being comforted by Leon and Anna.

"Agares."

"I don’t know why you reacted that way when I brought up those crosses. Do they have something to do with you?" asked Leon.

Agares stopped walking when Leon asked that.

Indeed, the crosses and the gallows were symbols of Agares’s regret.

Guilt constantly haunted him every time he saw crosses or gallows—Agares was always reminded of the good people who died because they were involved with him.

"Yes," said Agares briefly, without looking back.

"The ones crucified and hanged were my saviors."

Elsewhere, Silva had already regained consciousness. She saw one of her party members sitting by her side the entire time and felt grateful she recovered quickly.

"Where’s Agares?" asked Silva, worried.

She got up and looked through the inn room’s window. Clearly, she saw Agares in the city’s main street, talking with Leon and his party.

Longing to reunite with her dear friend, Silva rushed out of the inn and stepped toward Agares.

But her steps halted, and she immediately hid when she saw Agares talking. Her arrival might ruin the moment.

"Saviors? What does he mean?" asked Silva, hiding in a narrow alley, able to hear Agares’s voice clearly.

"What happened?" asked Leon.

"I’m not from this world. They sent us to this world after nearly killing us in ours."

"Chosen Heroes. That’s what they called us."

"At first, they treated us well and gave us privileges, but after the kingdom discovered my hero class, they separated me from the other chosen heroes."

"I escaped. I ran from the kingdom’s mages and soldiers until I was cornered at a forest cliff. They tortured me, stabbed me with flying swords, and let me sink into a great river."

Silva heard it, and her heart ached, her eyes wide open in disbelief that the Caer Vireth Kingdom would do something so cruel to a Chosen Hero—regardless of his hero class.

Even so, considering the strict rules about the Saber hero class, perhaps other kingdoms or the Great Empire would also take harsh action against Agares.

The systems and doctrines of the Great Empire must be changed regarding Saber hero class.

"And then?" asked Leon.

"I was saved by the Nadia Family. They took care of me and didn’t care about my hero class. They only saw a person in need of help."

"Priestess Ara came and healed me. I owe her everything."

Like being struck by lightning in broad daylight, Cassandra’s eyes widened in shock, her hands trembling.

Anna saw Cassandra’s reaction, shocked and certain she had a special connection with the woman Agares mentioned.

"Ara... Ara! You met her?" asked Cassandra.

Agares turned sharply, focusing his gaze on Cassandra, who stood near Leon and Anna.

"Yes."

"Did she have her own clinic?" asked Cassandra.

"Yes."

"Then where is she?!" asked Cassandra, increasingly impatient, causing Leon and Anna to calm her down.

"What’s going on?"

Leon looked ahead, focusing his eyes seriously on Agares.

"Ara is her younger sister."

"What?!" exclaimed Agares.

’So, she’s Ara’s sister? What an unexpected coincidence,’ thought Agares.

Agares fell silent, continuing to stare at Cassandra. He walked slowly back toward them, prompting Cassandra to rise from her seat.

"Priestess Ara was the only one who didn’t see me as a threat."

The man tapped his magic pouch and took out Ara’s damaged priestess staff. He handed it to Cassandra, enough to surprise and move her.

With trembling hands, Cassandra reached out and took the staff. She touched it, and there was still the name engraved on the staff—"Ara."

"This really belonged to Ara."

Cassandra’s sobs broke out, hugging the staff like it was part of Ara. Her tears flowed uncontrollably. Anna and Leon tried to calm her down.

"Then where is she?" asked Leon.

"Are you ready?" asked Agares.

"What?" asked Cassandra, crying.

"Nyx."

[Mode Standby Deactivated]

[Do you need assistance, Master?]

"Can you play a recording of when I arrived at Faircallen Village before and after it was destroyed?" asked Agares.

[For video extraction, my system is incapable]

[However, travel logs can be accessed using certain magic techniques, one of which is Thread of the Path of Fate]

[The Thread of Fate technique is usually used by officer-level mages for interrogation, requiring a significant amount of mana]

"Can you use the Thread of Fate magic?"

Cassandra nodded. She wiped away her tears with a hopeful face. She clearly said she knew how to perform the Thread of Fate technique.

Even so, only Cassandra would know the truth, because only she could see into Agares’s memories.

Agares crouched in front of Cassandra. The woman began forming complex hand signs. To use the Thread of Fate, she had to sacrifice 2000 mana. But it was worth what she would gain.

A magic circle appeared on Cassandra’s palm, glowing red with tiny red threads inside. Taking a deep breath, Cassandra placed her hand on Agares’s forehead.

"Activate the Thread of Fate!"
