The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1172: Real Gift
Chapter 1172: Real Gift
Gregor said quickly, “Gluttony’s suffering from a side effect from the indiscriminate devouring—a digestion problem. That was why the smaller me wasn’t immediately digested. However, it also benefits Gluttony greatly!”
“The poisonous wind!” Dead Pig caught on. “The poison mixed with other things it had eaten and remained undigested. That’s why it hasn’t caused any damage to Gluttony.”
“Yes! Gluttony can delay the digestion of the poisonous wind by eating continuously until it consumes us. Then it only has to stop eating and throw up the poison to win this battle.” Gregor thought of an analogy. “It's like my poison is sealed in a small metal case before being swallowed. Gluttony will be fine as long as that case isn't damaged.”
“Can you control the poisonous wind?” Mischievous Monkey asked.
“No. It’s isolated from me. I can’t sense it.” Gregor looked back at the massive black sphere rolling behind them, feeling a shudder run down his spine. “That is unless I get swallowed. However, I’ll die quickly. Gluttony can choose to—no, it will digest living creatures first. It’s in its nature.”
“Going into its second form and creating its domain came with a steep price: it has to endure the overpowering hunger, which has eroded away its rationality. Its hunger will not be appeased unless it eats real food. Once its hunger is sated, though, the domain will weaken. That’ll give us a chance to turn the tide.”
“Do you mean...” Dead Pig voiced his understanding. “The domain is like a game. Once it begins, both sides must follow the rules. The game will only end once Gluttony runs out of energy, or once its hunger is sated.”
“More or less.” Gregor swallowed his curse. “The Heavenly Way’s acting against us this time. Were we not in this black-and-white world, the wanderers in this market wouldn’t have vanished, and Gluttony might have swallowed them and become full.”
“Now, though, the four of us are the only living creatures in this market. Gluttony won’t be sated until it eats us, and so the game continues.”
“The Heavenly Way did more harm than good this time,” Mischievous said with a sigh.
“How about you make more smaller selves to feed it?” Dead Pig proposed.
“It won’t work!” Gregor was certain. “It has to be a complete lifeform with a mind and a soul. Flesh and blood alone won’t sate Gluttony.”
“So there’s only one solution,” Mischievous Monkey said. “Sacrifice one of us to Gluttony.”
Gregor smiled bitterly. “It’s cruel, but it’s the only solution I can come up with.”
“Then you do it, Gregor,” Dead Pig said seriously. “I’ll throw you into its mouth. Try to hold on as long as you can and use your poisonous wind to mess it up...”
“Huh?!”
Gregor felt like crying. Dead Pig was already lifting him with an arm. “Really-really? Although I feel like I’m the most suitable, too, why don’t we put it to a vote just to be fair...”
“Haha, you don’t have a say.” Dead Pig hurled him hard.
Fuck! I haven’t finished writing my novel!
Gregor squeezed his eyes shut.
Two seconds later, a pair of slim yet strong arms caught him. Gregor’s eyes flew open. He realized that he was being carried by Mischievous Monkey like a princess. He turned around to find Dead Pig smiling at him and Mischievous Monkey. He picked up Lovely Lamb, about to throw her to them as well.
“If we win, take care of my kid!” Dead PIg shouted.
“Dead Pig—” Gregor couldn’t continue. Whatever he said now would feel disingenuous.
Mischievous Monkey responded with a steady gaze at Dead Pig.
The moment Gregor proposed the solution, Mischievous Monkey had determined the best sacrifice: Dead Pig. And Dead Pig clearly thought the same.
Lovely Lamb wasn't an option. There was little chance that Mischievous Monkey or Gregor would be enough to satisfy and stop Gluttony. The most nutritious, filling, and long-lasting food among them would be Dead Pig.
Gluttony's giant form rumbled toward them, its terrible maw opening and closing while the black vortex inside devoured everything.

Dead Pig lifted Lovely Lamb. “Be good, Little Lamb. Listen to—”
“No!” Lovely Lamb cried out. “I’m going to protect you!”
Dead Pig paused, noticing her reddened, determined eyes and stubborn expression. At this moment, she was no longer a kid, but a fighter. She bit down on Dead Pig's arm, activating her Iron Skin partially.
“Agh!”
Her now-metallic teeth bit deep into his arm. Then Lovely Lamb used Damage Roulette to amplify the damage and pain by ten times. Dead Pig suddenly felt lightheaded, barely able to keep himself upright. Before he could react, Lovely Lamb had broken from his hold and rushed toward Gluttony.
“Lovely Lamb!”
Although Dead Pig immediately chased after her, his steps were unnaturally slow. He couldn't catch the girl. He realized that Lovely Lamb had used Specialized Guard on him—increasing his physical and mental defense while severely reducing his mobility.
The combination of Talents she had prepared for enemies, she now unleashed on Dead Pig instead.
Wearing a red dress with her black hair in two buns, she dashed toward the massive monster with unusual speed. She looked like a brave fawn running toward a tiger.
In the blink of an eye, the abyss-like mouth loomed before her. She leaped toward the vortex inside.
“No!” Dead Pig shouted, aiming his hands at Lovely Lamb.
Displacement!
He didn't have enough time to lock onto Lovely Lamb directly. Targeting a higher lifeform took longer than targeting a marked inanimate object. An enchanted Black Gold item, especially, would make the connection instantaneous.
Dead Pig targeted the Black Gold bracelet on her arm.
What Dead Pig had given her wasn't a simple bracelet, but an item that would allow him to reach her side no matter what danger they faced. In an instant, Dead Pig appeared right beside Lovely Lamb, pulling her into his arms. His thick, powerful limbs encircled her like a tall tree shielding a tender sapling from all elements.
Gluttony swallowed Dead Pig and Lovely Lamb.
Clink. A Black Gold bracelet fell on the ground and rolled half a meter before wobbling and finally settling down.
Rumble.
The black Pac-Man had not stopped.
