The Countess Lives Twice in the Apocalypse-Chapter 102: One-hundred-one
"The houses are coming along just fine." Jannah hummed out, her eyes landing and inspecting every house she passed by.
"There’s no one working at the walls right now, the two groups are recharging themselves, but they are halfway done." Jeriel said, informing Jannah about the progress of the expansion for the training grounds.
"Sounds great, let’s go finish that wall so they could focus on finishing the houses instead." Jannah stated, her pace picking up as she made her way to the gates.
The two of them reached the gates sooner than expected and were greeted by Kean, who was standing guard on the watchtower.
"My lady." The knight greeted her with cheeriness, "It was nice to see you walking around, looking healthy and well."
"Likewise, Kean." Jannah returned the gesture with a small smile of her own, everyone seemed to be happy to see her walking around, like she was locked inside of her room for months and had only come out now.
It was odd, but strangely comforting.
"Are you here to check the training ground’s wall, my lady?" Kean asked, watching as Jannah grabbed her little sister’s hand and stood still in her spot.
"That’s correct." Jannah hummed out and looked down on her boots, "I’m also here to finish it."
Her eyes were fixed on the ground below her, her mind chanting the name of the skill she needed to use to create the wall she needs.
Kean couldn’t utter a proper response to the Countess’s statement because the low hum of rumbling rocks below his feet had startled him, making him stumble back as the ground suddenly sprouted under the Countess and her little sister.
"Agh!" Came out a surprised yelp from Jeriel as a large rock wall slowly began to form beneath her feet, pushing its way upwards out of the ground.
The rock wall surged upwards, its surface hard and smooth as it grew taller and taller.
She stood atop the growing rock wall as the wall continued to rise, her feet perched properly on its ever-expanding surface, trembling slightly, the earth stirring as it responded to Jannah’s wishes.
"Come on." Jannah spoke up after a moment, the wall beneath her feet connecting to the end of the expansion of the training ground’s wall as she tugged her little sister closer, "Hold on tight if you don’t want to fall."
"I know that much." Jeriel grumbled, her cheeks puffing out slightly as she followed behind her big sister.
The Rafelon sisters walked across the elemental rock wall, their feet treading lightly on the surface, walking towards the other end of the wall where the knights would have to pick up their progress to continue building the wall.
She was expecting a slightly different quality of the wall, but to her surprise, the thickness, sturdiness, and the height of the wall made by the knights were almost the same as hers.
"It seems like if they continued to create the wall, they would level up sooner or later." Jannah commented, the bottom of her foot brushing the surface of the wall with obvious fondness as she shook her head.
Then, the air started to crackle around her, chanting the name of the skill once more as the unknown source of energy of the wall responded to her presence, the unnamed power surging and flowing through her.
She started walking again, tugging her little sister as she walked, making the wall rise faster to fall with her steps, to catch her behind she could feel the sense of dread of falling.
"You know.. I think I haven’t said this, but you’re really amazing." Jeriel said, speaking and praising her big sister out of nowhere which caught Jannah off guard.
"I’m not amazing." The black haired older sister stated, the tone of her voice was sharp as she immediately denied her little sister’s claim, her eyes trained on the rising ground that seemed to chase her walking pace to catch her foot.
The woman walked with confidence on top of an elemental wall, every step was light and sure, her balance perfect despite the fact that she was treading on almost nothing, but a rising wall.
"What’s that supposed to mean?" Jeriel asked with her eyebrows furrowed in irritation, "You’re amazing. How many times do I have to say that?"
The wall continued to move under her feet, its surface shifting and catching her like a living thing yet she remained steady and in control, each step sending a ripple through the elementals that made up the wall, but never breaking her stride.
"It means that I’m only doing my duty as a protector and as a big sister." Jannah tutted out, a matter-of-fact tone dripping like a vice in her voice.
Their steps were soundless on the top of the rock wall, the surface solid beneath their feet. The wall was relatively thick, wide— its surface smooth and leveled, the glowing red light surrounding it momentarily.
"And while doing so, you’re amazing." Jeriel rebutted, her hand squeezing Jannah’s hand tightly as a sign of making her big sister stop putting herself down in front of her, it was unpleasant and heartbreaking.
"If you say so." Jannah hummed out, taking another step, the ground beneath her feet shifted and shimmered, the last rock wall shooting up from the ground, forming a thick and sturdy barrier that stretched out far in front of her.
Finally, the two of them stopped walking.
"Wow.." Was the only thing Jeriel could breathe out.
From their spot on the top of the rock wall, the sisters scanned the large space inside.
The area was almost empty, the silence settling around them as they looked around, their eyes sweeping over the empty space within. The wall stood tall and solid, Jannah’s power still radiating faintly from the stone.
The Countess felt a sense of satisfaction as she looked out over the empty space, her mind admiring the effort of her people.
Around her, the wall stretched on all sides, the stone rising high above her head. The space was empty, the only sound being the wind as it blew through her ears, whisking past her and her little sister.
The two of them continued to look around, their eyes still taking in the empty surroundings as Jannah started to go back to walking.
The only thing breaking the silence was the sound of the wind whispering around them, the groans and moans of the undead that started to pound their bloody fists against the newly built wall with the woman’s footsteps echoing softly on top of the wall.
Jannah’s eyes shifted from the empty space to the other side of the wall, her eyes catching the sight of the zombies hands reaching upwards, the bloody and filthy fingers of the undead clenching around nothing.
Then, she turned her head back to the space on the other side, her gaze landing on the few numbers of zombies banging on the wooden gates.
"This is amazing..!" Jeriel said, her voice dripping with astonishment and awestruck as her eyes shone brightly with affection, her hold on her big sister’s hand getting tighter, "You’re amazing! And you’re telling me that you’re not when you made this?!"
"I wasn’t the only one who made it, I just finished it." Jannah stated, pointing out the obvious with a raise of an eyebrow.
"Still!" Jeriel exclaimed and let go of her hand, "It’s amazing!"
"It would be after I get rid of those things." Jannah smiled playfully as she nudged her head towards the direction of the erratic zombies banging against the gates of the town, "After I’m done, we can say that it’s amazing, yes?"
"Hmph! You better say that you’re amazing or else!" Jeriel huffed out, crossing her arms in front of her.
"Yes, yes." Jannah chuckled quietly under her breath, bringing out her sword from her inventory along with a big piece of paper and pen. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Here, why don’t you design the training ground according to your taste while I finish cleaning up?" Jannah suggested, thrusting the paper and pen towards her little sister’s arms, "Make sure to put a couple of sheds somewhere."
She didn’t wait for her little sister to respond and descended the rock wall, her foot planting firmly on the newly risen wall beneath her as she walked down.
Once she reached the ground, she stood still for a moment and scanned the vastness of the space before her, which was almost overwhelming, the emptiness almost like it was taunting her to fill it with training dummies all over the place.
She let out a sigh, whistling loudly to catch the attention of the zombies in front of the gates.
She was thankful that the walls were high, the height giving a sense of security as she stood guard and waited for the zombies to approach her.
One by one, all of them whisked their heads in her direction, their milky white and clouded irises landing on her.
One, two, three, four.. Five, and.. Six? Jannah counted the number of the zombies that started to run towards her, the grip on the handle of the sword tightening as she counted them.
As the groaning and eager undeads got closer and closer, Jannah got into a stance, the blade of her sword glinting brightly under the sunlight.
She took a deep breath and leaped forward.
