The Civil Servant's Job is to Raise The Furries!-Chapter 64: Too Good at Pretending
The two imported four-wheel sand motorcycles in front of us look a lot like four-wheel race cars. One is in a sleek black, and the other in a refreshing white, costing a total of five hundred thousand.
Xu Ying was a bit numb: "Two of them?"
"Yes, to switch between them. Always using one can easily lead to breakdowns."
Qiao Yuxi was already seated in the passenger seat, eagerly looking at Xu Ying: "Quick! Start the engine!"
On the way here, Qiao Yuxi had been watching reruns of Xu Ying’s live broadcasts and knew that Xu Ying was a master at racing. She believed that Xu Ying would quickly get the hang of the four-wheel motorcycle.
Since she was a novice unfamiliar with the desert conditions, it was best for her to sit obediently in the passenger seat to avoid causing trouble.
"Let’s try to find some clues before it gets dark!"
The Little Sand Cat yawned and crawled out of the nearby sand pit at the rescue station. Typically active at night, it had woken up unusually early this time.
Desert Cats generally use abandoned burrows of other animals as their nests. With many Little Desert Rats having moved, it simply expanded a rat hole a bit and moved in.
[Sister, where are you going? Wow, this vehicle looks cool. I want to ride too!]
[Can you take me along for the ride?]
The Little Sand Cat tilted its head as it stood by the new motorcycle, obediently squatting without a command from Xu Ying allowing it to board.
How could Xu Ying refuse such an obedient creature’s request for a ride?
"We’re going somewhere far this time. If you want to come, hop on."
[Baby’s coming!]
The Little Sand Cat cleaned the sand off its paws at the foot pedal of the motorcycle before jumping onto the seat, nestling in the gap between Xu Ying and Qiao Yuxi.
Since it boarded, Qiao Yuxi’s gaze was glued to the Little Sand Cat. Such a small cat, yet this was its adult size — she heard they could fit into a teacup when they’re nearly grown.
Seeing this, Xu Ying said to Qiao Yuxi, "You might as well hold it, the road’s bumpy."
Qiao Yuxi was both surprised and delighted: "Really, can I?"
The Little Sand Cat meowed agreeably at Qiao Yuxi twice before springing into her arms itself.
With the small, fluffy state-protected cat snuggled up to her, Qiao Yuxi felt like the happiest person in the world!
Although returning to the scene where she nearly lost her life made Qiao Yuxi quite fearful and resistant, finding evidence was more important.
But now with a furry friend in her arms, Qiao Yuxi’s fear lessened significantly.
Having previously operated similar four-wheeled motorcycles during UN animal rescue missions in her past life, Xu Ying took the keys and started the engine. In less than half an hour, she’d become familiar with her new vehicle.
It must be said, the four-wheel was easier to manage than two, especially when climbing dunes, avoiding the bumpy, butt-paining rides from before.
In the future, rescuing small animals with this four-wheel could also be steadier and more reassuring!
In less than two hours, Xu Ying reached the place where she had treated Qiao Yuxi.
Looking at the vast desert, Qiao Yuxi sighed: "I’d love to retrace my steps and tell you exactly where I came from to here. But looking at the endless Gobi, everything looks the same, I’m lost just standing here."
"Don’t worry, we have the little animals to help us."
Xu Ying sent the Little Sand Cat to find a local sand rat for assistance, and it quickly returned with one.
[Oh heavens, I’ll never get up early again. The early bird gets the worm, but the early mouse gets eaten by the cat. Boohoo.]
Being carried in the Little Sand Cat’s mouth, the sand rat flailed its paws in the air, thinking it was doomed.
"Don’t be afraid, the cat won’t eat you today."
Xu Ying poked at the sand rat’s round butt: "Do you remember me? I was the animal rescuer who came last time."
Hearing Xu Ying’s voice, the sand rat looked over and then widened its eyes: [It’s you, the little biscuit tycoon!]
Xu Ying’s practice of giving small biscuits when asking the sand rats for help had spread throughout their community.
Hearing the sand rat call her a "little biscuit tycoon," Xu Ying grinned and pulled out biscuit crumbs she always carried with her, scattering them on rock pieces to treat it.
The Little Sand Cat also set the sand rat down.
The sand rat immediately chomped on the biscuit crumbs; upon looking up, it recognized Qiao Yuxi: [Wow, the human who almost got eaten by a Vulture is alive after all.]
Xu Ying became slightly emotional: "You still remember her? Do you recall which direction she came from before collapsing?"
[Sure, while our memory isn’t as good as a camel’s, it’s not bad. Last time didn’t you ask us to find information about the man accompanying her?]
[Although the usual animals here didn’t see traces of the man, a Mo Bailin spotted the young lady and the man setting up camp and making a fire elsewhere.]
After finishing the biscuit crumbs, the sand rat led Xu Ying to meet the witness, Mo Bailin.
Mo Bailin is a small bird living in the desert, with a body color very similar to sand. Tiny, they can be held within two hands.
Unlike other birds, they’re more accustomed to ground activity, enjoying running, with dietary habits similar to chicks. They build nests in rock crannies and between stones.
Communicating with Mo Bailin, with excitement it flapped its wings: [Ah! I’ll never forget that despicable man; he took the rocks from my home to secure his tent and discovered my three eggs, which he then roasted and ate!]
Avenging fallen offspring is irreconcilable hatred!
Xu Ying translated Mo Bailin’s words for Qiao Yuxi.
Suddenly recalling something, Qiao Yuxi remarked, "No wonder, when I came out of the tent and saw him roasting something by the fire, he claimed he was burning trash, not wanting to litter paper towels and such in the desert."
Qiao Yuxi sneered, "I have a butterfly dog at home, and that scumbag Shi Wenxuan always pretended to be an animal protector, showing off certificates of donations to animal protection groups, but my dog always barked at him upon sight. Now it seems he must’ve done something shady behind my back."
Mo Bailin, puffed up like an inflated little ball, was extremely angry: [This man’s quite the actor, I also saw him call other girls while you slept!]
[In revenge, I sneaked his half-eaten canned food away, also snatching a set of keys and a glove.]
[That man anxiously searched for a long time, frantically but in vain, almost digging the ground, appearing desperate, which finally appeased me a bit.]
Xu Ying’s expression brightened: "Do you still have that can, those keys, and the glove?"
Although Qiao Yuxi didn’t understand Mo Bailin’s chirping, Xu Ying’s question made it clear. Mo Bailin had once taken Shi Wenxuan’s things!
