The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 121: Slapping One’s Own Face
The confident, composed smile on Cara Preston’s face froze the moment she saw the question on the test paper. Her expression turned quite ugly.
Vera Xavier clasped her hands to her chest. "Cara, you have such a strong grasp of the basics. I’m sure this problem is no trouble for you. Come on, hurry and show us how it’s done."
After she finished, she turned to Nathaniel Nathan and said, "Cara is really brilliant. She always placed in the top three in our class on exams. Even if she messed up this time, her fundamentals are still solid. Let’s see how she solves it!"
Fine beads of sweat broke out on Cara Preston’s forehead. She instantly realized she had bragged too much. Her original plan was to put Vera Xavier down a peg and show off for Nathaniel Nathan, but now it looked like she was the one who was going to make a fool of herself.
Vera Xavier looked at her and said, "Go on, Cara. I’m waiting for you to enlighten me!"
She watched Cara Preston with a smile, a look of what could almost be called admiration on her face.
Nathaniel Nathan glanced at her, clearly seeing the mischief in her eyes. ’So it’s true,’ he thought. ’She’s not as meek and cute as she appears on the surface. At heart, she’s got a devious side, too.’
He placed his pen down on the paper. Cara Preston coughed lightly and said, "I swear, I used to know how to solve this. I just... can’t seem to remember how today for some reason. Ouch, my head is killing me!"
Vera Xavier was inwardly amused by Cara Preston’s performance but played along beautifully. "If your head hurts, you shouldn’t push yourself. You should go get some rest! Don’t wear yourself out, or Mom will be worried sick." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Cara Preston had no intention of leaving Vera Xavier and Nathaniel Nathan alone. Pressing a hand to her temple, she forced a smile. "I’ve just forgotten for the moment, but I’m still eager to learn. I heard that Nathan was once the top scholar in the province, so a problem like this is surely no challenge for him. Nathan, would you be able to solve it and show Vera and me?"
"No." Nathaniel Nathan once again unleashed his trademark cold, sharp tongue. "What I hate most are people who pretend to understand things they don’t, run their mouths off, and then feel great about themselves, thinking they’re the smartest person in the world when they’re actually just a complete and utter moron."
The corner of Vera Xavier’s mouth twitched. As for Cara Preston, her face cycled through shades of red and white, as if it were a dyer’s shop.
Cara Preston bit her lip. "Nathan, how could you say that about me?"
Nathaniel Nathan shot her a sidelong glance. "Please, stop calling me ’brother’ from now on. I don’t have a sister as dumb as you. Every time you call me that, I feel like you’re dragging down the collective IQ of the entire Nathan Family by several notches."
Cara Preston was an incredibly prideful person, so after being spoken to like that by Nathaniel Nathan, she couldn’t hold it together anymore and burst into tears. But then she worried that crying would only make him despise her more, so she turned and ran back to her room.
Vera Xavier coughed lightly and glanced at Nathaniel Nathan. "She’s a girl, you know. Don’t you think you were a little too harsh?"
"Was anything I said untrue?" Nathaniel Nathan asked.
Vera Xavier threw up her hands. That was precisely the point—the fact that it was all true was what made it such a devastating blow to Cara Preston.
Nathaniel Nathan picked up his pen. "The know-it-all is gone. Let’s get back to the problem."
Vera Xavier turned to look at him. His expression was calm and composed. ’He really does treat me pretty well, all things considered,’ she thought. ’All he did was tease me about my chest, and even then, he was pretty subtle about it. But with Cara, he basically launched a full-blown personal attack.’
’So, I guess I should be grateful!’
