The CEO's Substitute Ex-Wife-Chapter 141: Mother Knows Best
Chapter 141: Mother Knows Best
With the warm seafood porridge in his stomach, Ye Feimo felt much better, and a bit of color returned to his face. Cheng Anya’s heart ached for her son, but ultimately, it was his own affair, and she couldn’t intervene directly.
"Wen Nuan’s intelligence isn’t even half of yours, so why can’t you manage her? Or have you just gotten dumber?" Cheng Anya almost wanted to pry open his skull to see if his brain had been kicked by a donkey.
"Why should I manage her?"
"Oh, you were just waiting for her call, weren’t you? You saw the phone and, without even looking at it, just told her to come back and cook. You’re quite something, falling to the level of waiting for a woman’s call, and still daring to talk back to me," Cheng Anya couldn’t help but retort.
Ye Feimo remained silent, not responding. He didn’t want to discuss this with Cheng Anya.
He had spoken too harshly that day in anger, but he hadn’t completely wronged her.
Ultimately, he was simply annoyed that Wen Nuan was constantly with Fang Liucheng. It was already in the past, yet they were still acting so close and getting photographed together. What kind of nonsense was that?
Cheng Anya didn’t know the awkwardness in Ye Feimo’s heart was purely due to a broken jar of jealousy.
However, she also understood that if even Wen Nuan, with her excellent temper, could be driven away by Feimo, he must have said something truly unforgivable.
She seemed to have read some of the news in the television and newspapers.
The day before yesterday was Feimo’s birthday, and he had originally arranged for Wen Nuan to come home for dinner.
It was supposed to be a good opportunity for them.
Who knew Wen Nuan would miss the appointment, and Feimo didn’t come back either. Lin Ning said they were all drinking at the ballroom. Cheng Anya guessed that Feimo must have been stood up, and that Wen Nuan was with Fang Liucheng, missing his birthday.
She remembered that when she suggested Wen Nuan come to the Ye family to celebrate, Ye Feimo was happy and looked forward to that day. But unexpectedly, it turned out this way. Perhaps this incident had strained their relationship.
Cheng Anya didn’t expose his feelings. She told Ye Feimo, "Wen Nuan is a really good child, from what I’ve seen. Don’t miss out on her, or you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. Besides, how are you inferior to Fang Liucheng? In terms of family background, looks, or net worth, how are you inferior to him? You’re better than him in all the qualities ordinary women look for in a husband. It’s just your temper isn’t great, and your character is pending. But as long as Wen Nuan can tolerate it, that’s fine. So, pull yourself together, don’t let my daughter-in-law run away, understood?"
Cheng Anya spoke with an air of absolute authority.
Ye Feimo didn’t take it seriously at all. "No!"
Cheng Anya was exasperated.
After dinner, Ye Feimo’s mother urged him to shower and go to bed, emphasizing that he must eat his meals on time, without fail. Only after Ye Feimo agreed did Cheng Anya leave.
She went downstairs and was about to drive away when she saw someone sitting on a bench under a tree. Cheng Anya looked closely and realized it was Wen Nuan.
A smile played on her lips as she watched Wen Nuan with interest.
It was so late; why wasn’t she home, sitting downstairs instead?
Wen Nuan didn’t know why she was there. After seeing Fang Liucheng off, she felt very uneasy and took a taxi back to City Apartments. The lights on the 44th floor were on; Ye Feimo was home.
She felt a pang of worry, wondering if he had eaten.
She really wanted to go up and check, but then the thought of how Ye Feimo had insulted her made her unable to cast aside her pride. It felt too spineless. Every time he yelled at her, her anger usually faded within a few days, but this time was different.
Every time she remembered his sharp and vicious words from that day, Wen Nuan’s heart still ached in waves.
Ye Feimo had insulted her like this more than once. The last time, after the accident in Casablanca, he also cursed her. That time, she knew he was just too worried about her, which made him speak without thinking.
Even though he was scolding her, his eyes showed concern for her.
So, within a few days, she had forgotten about it.
This time was different. His eyes were filled with mockery, disgust, and humiliation. She couldn’t bear Ye Feimo looking at her like that; it hurt Wen Nuan more than if he had simply said he hated her.
Yet, despite all this, while cooking with her mother, she still thought about learning more dishes to offer him variety, so he wouldn’t always eat the same few meals. During dinner, she would glance at the clock, wondering if he was back, if he had eaten.
She knew how severe Ye Feimo’s stomach problems were. Missing two meals could cause him pain, and when he was irritable or stressed, the pain would be even worse. When she saw Fang Liucheng off, she came here along the way.
Though it felt spineless, her concern wouldn’t let her leave.
But seeing the warm glow of the lights on the 44th floor, her heart finally settled. That meant he was home and would take care of himself. Ye Feimo knew about his illness, so he was more proactive than anyone in tending to his stomach.
She lingered in the garden downstairs, sitting for a while, counting sheep with her head down.
She felt like an idiot, not knowing what she was holding on to, or what she was worried about. Perhaps Ye Feimo didn’t care about her concern at all; perhaps he didn’t need her worry.
Perhaps he would even find it annoying.
Wen Nuan looked at her phone. She had wanted to call him since she left, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
They were in a cold war.
Now, looking at her silent phone, she wished it would ring. She wished Ye Feimo would call and ask her why she wasn’t home yet, why she hadn’t come back to cook for him.
Even just a question would be good.
No, even if he were yelling, it would be better than complete silence.
He probably didn’t need her at all.
Without her, he would still manage just fine, and he wouldn’t get sick. She wasn’t that important.
Although she understood this, thinking about it still made Wen Nuan a little sad.
The night deepened, and the evening breeze grew cold. After sitting for nearly two hours, Wen Nuan felt she had been foolish enough. The living room lights were off; he was probably asleep. She could finally go home with a clear conscience.
Wen Nuan stood up, glanced at the 44th floor one last time, and chuckled self-deprecatingly.
In the cold wind and heavy dew, for whom was she foolishly waiting?
She herself hadn’t expected to be so foolish.
Wen Nuan wandered around downstairs for a while, then walked out of City Apartments and took a taxi home.
Cheng Anya shook her head. These two children were truly worrying. One was contradictory, stubborn as a mule, and the other would rather stand in the cold wind worrying about him than go upstairs to check on him.
She couldn’t interfere; this was Feimo and Wen Nuan’s affair.
Every couple walks this path: longing, hesitation, anxiety, hurt, forgiveness, release, deep love... Every different emotion represents a step in their growth.
Without experiencing these, how would they navigate the many years ahead?
She truly liked Wen Nuan and sincerely hoped that Feimo wouldn’t miss out on her.
