The Cat-Like Miss Preston: Mr. CEO begs for Reconciliation!-Chapter 118: Serious for Only Three Seconds
Chloe Preston turned around and blinked at him. "Are we going to meet the person who can help me get into the Xavier Family?"
Donovan Xavier nodded. "Tomorrow just so happens to be her birthday."
"I’ve already prepared a gift and spoken with her. She’s quite eager to meet you."
Chloe Preston’s eyes widened in surprise. "She already knows I exist?"
Donovan Xavier tidied her slightly messy hair and smiled. "Yes, and she even knows there’s a little one in your belly."
"What was her reaction?" Chloe asked.
Donovan Xavier paused for a few seconds. "I couldn’t quite tell over the phone, but I imagine she’s happy. She’s sure to like anyone I like."
Chloe Preston remained silent, squirmed out of his arms, and headed straight for the dressing room.
"The floor is slippery, slow down," Donovan Xavier said, a little nervous as he followed her.
In the dressing room, Chloe Preston walked to the full-length mirror and examined herself carefully. Pressing her lips together, she then dived into the various closets, rummaging through dresses.
Donovan Xavier leaned lazily to one side, finding it amusing. "What are you doing?"
Chloe’s voice was muffled from inside a closet. "Choosing clothes. It’s my first visit; I have to make a good impression."
As the saying goes, clothes make the man. I can’t be careless with my attire.
Donovan Xavier thought for a moment, then walked over and gently wrapped her in his arms. "Then choose the light green one. Something gentle. She likes that color, so it’s a way to cater to her tastes."
Chloe Preston nodded. "Okay."
She walked to the other side of the room, opened another closet, and began searching again, her expression serious and focused.
Donovan Xavier walked over and stood behind her, leaning down until his handsome face was almost touching hers. "Baby."
"Hmm?"
"Stop picking out clothes. It’s getting late."
Chloe Preston elbowed him gently. "I’m going to look a little longer so I won’t be scrambling tomorrow. If you’re tired, you can go to sleep first."
Donovan Xavier blew warm air into her ear. "Come sleep with me."
"I have nightmares when you’re not here."
Chloe Preston was speechless.
Donovan Xavier reached out, turned her around to face him, and lowered his head to kiss the delicate tip of her nose. "It’s a long night. We can’t let it go to waste. We should do something interesting."
Chloe Preston lowered her eyes and pointed at her belly. "I can’t right now."
He had hurt her last time, and she was still a little scared.
Donovan Xavier paused briefly, then took her hand and insistently led her out of the closet with a laugh. "It’s not like that’s the only way."
Chloe Preston was speechless.
The night was very, very long.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, raindrops beat against the glass with a steady PITTER-PATTER, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. The wind was strong, and lightning flashed.
That night, the man was docile, allowing her to take the lead.
「The next day.」
At the first light of dawn, the rain stopped, and a thin mist rose outside the window.
Chloe Preston got up early to wash up, then ran to the dressing room to change. She sat at the vanity to do her makeup.
She was already a rare beauty, with a cool, fair complexion and a look that was both glamorous and gentle. With just a little makeup, she looked even more enchanting.
She wore a light green silk cheongsam with exquisite embroidery, her hair styled in a side bun and held with a white jade hairpin. She looked fresh and graceful, serene and elegant.
Chloe Preston looked at her reflection in the mirror.
A second later, a handsome face squeezed into the frame from the right.
"You’re awake?" she smiled.
Donovan Xavier, wearing a black robe with its lapels slightly open, leaned in close, his nose brushing the nape of her neck.
He spoke, his voice pleasantly hoarse from sleep. "Mhm. When I woke up, you weren’t in my arms. I panicked for a moment."
As he spoke, memories of the previous night flooded his mind. He couldn’t stop himself from kissing her small face.
Chloe Preston’s face flushed. She dodged slightly, her tone tinged with playful reproach. "It’s so early. Don’t mess around, you’ll kiss my foundation off."
Donovan reached out, pulling her into his embrace with a smile. "What does that matter? My Chloe is beautiful even without makeup. The more I look at you, the more I like what I see."
Chloe Preston hummed softly. "I think you only like my face. When I get old, you’ll probably find it more and more annoying to look at me."
"I won’t," Donovan Xavier said with certainty.
Chloe Preston crossed her arms. "How do you know?"
Donovan Xavier gazed at their reflections, his voice low and laced with a smile. "A pretty face isn’t enough to make me this captivated. Chloe Preston, I like *you*—all of you."
Chloe Preston’s heart fluttered.
She took a shallow breath. "Really?"
Donovan Xavier laughed in response. "Do I have any reason to lie to you?"
"It’s still early. Let’s kiss a bit longer."
Chloe Preston gave him a playful glare. "You can’t be serious for more than three seconds."
Donovan Xavier’s eyebrow twitched upward, and his thin lips curled. "You’re right. I was never a very serious person to begin with."
Chloe sighed in resignation and let him kiss her.
The next moment, Donovan Xavier reached out to touch her belly, his thumb gently caressing it. "Baby, be good. When you come out, Mommy and I will love you very much."
A gentle, radiant smile filled Chloe’s eyes.
「At noon.」
The sun hung high in the sky as a heatwave rolled in.
The two of them took a flight to Ryston.
After a while, the car arrived at Veridia Garden.
The car door opened. Donovan Xavier got out first, then took the woman’s hand, worried she might stumble as she got out.
As a breeze blew past, Chloe Preston glanced around. "The air in Ryston seems hotter than in Kryton."
Donovan Xavier held her hand and led her forward.
Chloe took a shallow breath.
"Nervous?" Donovan Xavier glanced at her.
Chloe Preston nodded.
Donovan Xavier stopped, leaned closer, and kissed her forehead. "Don’t be afraid. I’m here."
Just then, a servant walked out from the main gate, smiling respectfully. "Young Master Xavier, you’ve arrived!"
As she spoke, her gaze fell upon Chloe Preston, looking her up and down. "Is this Miss Quinn?"
Donovan Xavier nodded. "Mhm. Is Grandma getting anxious from waiting?"
The servant replied, "Not really. Miss Rowan is here. She’s keeping her company."
Donovan Xavier frowned. "Why is she here too?"
The servant said, "Miss Rowan mentioned it’s the Old Madam’s birthday today, so she came especially to chat with her."
Donovan Xavier said nothing, his expression darkening slightly.
He reached out and led Chloe inside.
As they walked, Chloe looked at him. "Oh, so you brought me to see your grandmother. But why is she living here alone instead of at the Xavier estate?"
Donovan Xavier replied, "That’s a long story. I’ll tell you later."
Inside the room, the light was bright.
An incense burner sat on the sandalwood table, its smoke curling upwards and filling the room with its fragrance.
Rosalind Rowan sat on the sofa, clutching the slender arm of the person beside her, her eyes curved into smiling crescents.
CLICK.
The door was suddenly thrown open.
"Old Madam, the Young Master has arrived!" the servant announced.
Hearing this, Rosalind Rowan’s face instantly lit up with joy.
She stood up, about to walk over to greet him, but froze when she saw the woman by his side.
Why is she here too? What a jinx!
"Donovan," she called to him softly.
Donovan Xavier acted as if he hadn’t heard, not even sparing her a glance. He walked over and looked at the elderly lady sitting on the sofa. "Grandma."
"You’re here. Sit," Luna Kane said gently, putting down her teacup, her eyes filled with a kind smile.
She looked advanced in years, with fine lines crisscrossing the corners of her eyes and her hair pure silver. Though she seemed slightly haggard, her eyes were bright. Her frame was thin, and she wore a dark green cheongsam embroidered with gold thread.
Although her youthful beauty had faded, an alluring elegance still emanated from her very bones.
Luna Kane glanced at Chloe Preston. "Is this the girlfriend you were telling me about? The one named... Chlo—"
"Chloe," Donovan Xavier finished for her.
Luna Kane gestured gently, signaling for her to come closer.
Chloe Preston walked forward, her lips slightly pursed as she spoke nervously, "Gran... Grandma."
Luna Kane took her hand and patted it with a smile. "What are you so nervous for? I’m not going to eat you."
"You are indeed pretty. No wonder this rascal likes you."
Rosalind Rowan stood to the side, digging her fingernails into her palms and clenching her teeth.
"Then, Grandma, do you like her?" Donovan spoke up from the side, rubbing her shoulder as if trying to curry favor.
Luna Kane said nothing.
