The Cat-Like Miss Preston: Mr. CEO begs for Reconciliation!-Chapter 114: Don’t Be Angry, I’m Apologizing to You
Donovan Xavier heard her, and his dark eyes flickered.
The woman was still fast asleep. Her eyelashes were long, her skin was as fair as snow, and her face was beautiful even in slumber.
Donovan Xavier leaned down, moved closer, and whispered in her ear, "Chloe Preston, say it again. Who do you love?"
Silence fell.
It started to rain again outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. The wind drove the downpour, and raindrops splattered furiously against the glass with a sharp PATTER.
"Chloe, say you love me. Tell me you only love me, all right?"
Donovan Xavier didn’t give up. His lips moved down to rest on her collarbone, gently nibbling.
The woman remained unresponsive, as if she were dead.
Was she really that exhausted? To be sleeping so soundly!
Donovan Xavier frowned. "Chloe Preston, are you truly asleep, or are you pretending?"
He reached out and kept poking her soft cheek. "Wake up. You’re not allowed to sleep. Tell me, who the hell is this Mo!"
His intuition told him it was definitely a man. This woman... Not long ago, they were passionately entangled, and now, the moment she’s asleep, she’s murmuring another man’s name. And with such affection, too. Honestly, hearing it made his gut twist. If she weren’t pregnant, he would pin her down and punish her properly.
Donovan Xavier suppressed a wave of anger, turned off the light, and rolled over with his back to her.
He closed his eyes, forcing himself to sleep.
But sleep wouldn’t come. The sound of her calling another man’s name echoed in his mind, infuriating him.
He didn’t know how much time had passed when a soft murmur drifted through the darkness. "Donovan..."
Donovan Xavier opened his eyes, his heart stirring.
He turned slightly toward her, just as the half-asleep woman snuggled into his arms, nuzzling against his chest.
"Awake?" he asked.
Chloe Preston nodded, too sleepy to open her eyes. She instinctively grabbed his arm and mumbled, "Hold me."
As soon as she said it, she fell back into a deep sleep.
Donovan Xavier felt a sense of helplessness. He was at a complete loss with her.
...
「The next morning.」
A ray of sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, warm and gentle.
Chloe Preston lay in bed, slowly opening her sleepy eyes.
She stretched lazily, rubbed her eyes, and looked at the space beside her.
It was empty, leaving only a cold pillow.
He’s an early riser.
Chloe Preston lay back down, closed her eyes, and lingered in bed a bit longer before slowly getting up.
「Downstairs.」
Donovan Xavier was alone on the sofa, a laptop resting on his legs. His face was handsome, and his slender fingers tapped crisply on the keyboard.
The little orange cat jumped up with a soft "mrrow," beginning to walk across the keyboard.
Donovan Xavier wasn’t annoyed. He simply raised a hand and gently flicked its forehead. "Get down. You’re interrupting my work."
The little orange cat seemed to understand. It let out another two mrows and obediently jumped down.
Donovan Xavier watched it go, the corner of his lip ticking up in a slight smile. His voice was laced with amusement. "Such a good kitty. Unlike your mother, who only knows how to make me angry."
The little orange cat ran over and rubbed its furry little head against his pant leg.
Just then, Chloe Preston came down the stairs after freshening up. Her dark hair was tucked behind her ears, and she wore a champagne-colored slip dress. Her face was a picture of gentle beauty, her bearing elegant and poised.
She walked slowly in her soft slippers, her body aching and weak. He had been a little rough last night.
Hearing the movement, Donovan Xavier’s hands stilled on the keyboard, and he glanced back.
Their eyes met. Chloe Preston’s were sparkling with a smile as she said in a slightly hoarse voice, "Morning."
Donovan Xavier looked away almost instantly. He was wearing a pair of gold-rimmed glasses and went back to typing on his laptop, resuming his work. His demeanor was utterly cold.
Chloe Preston raised a delicate eyebrow.
What’s wrong with him?
She walked slowly over. The little orange cat circled around her, rubbing against her leg.
Chloe Preston looked at the man and called out softly, "Donovan."
Donovan Xavier didn’t even raise his eyes, acting as if he hadn’t heard her.
Seeing this, Chloe Preston took another step, sat beside him, and looped her arm through his. "Donovan, what’s wrong?"
He still didn’t respond, but he also didn’t pull away.
"Are you upset?"
"Did I make you angry?"
"Honey?"
Chloe Preston whispered her questions, but he remained utterly silent.
She pursed her lips, leaned closer, hooked a finger around his black tie, and pressed a kiss to his Adam’s apple.
He’s always been sensitive there.
But Donovan Xavier jerked back, avoiding the kiss.
Chloe Preston froze for a moment. After a long pause, she stared at his handsome face and asked, "Donovan Xavier, what are you doing so early in the morning? Are you giving me the silent treatment?"
Donovan Xavier replied blandly, "I have to work."
Suddenly, Housekeeper Wallace approached with a smile. "Sir, Madam, breakfast is ready."
Chloe Preston stood up, looked at the man, and said softly, "It’s time for breakfast."
"Not hungry."
Chloe Preston said nothing more. A flicker of irritation rising in her, she went to the dining table and sat down alone.
Housekeeper Wallace noticed the strange atmosphere between them. They must have had a fight. But they were always so loving and inseparable. How did things suddenly turn out like this?
Housekeeper Wallace walked over and served Chloe a bowl of soup first. "Madam, be careful, it’s hot."
Chloe Preston looked at the spread of dishes on the table, and remembering the man’s cold attitude from moments before, she completely lost her appetite.
Housekeeper Wallace handed her a pair of chopsticks, gently persuading her, "Madam, please eat a little. Being angry isn’t good for the baby."
Only then did Chloe Preston remember the little life in her belly. She took the chopsticks and reluctantly ate a few bites.
She glanced back at the sofa. The man was still focused on his computer, his expression cold.
After a while, Chloe Preston put down her chopsticks, stood up, and left the table.
She had only taken a single step when the man took off his glasses. He rose from the sofa, tall and imposing, and walked over.
Donovan Xavier’s face was expressionless, his aura refined yet glacial. He walked to the table, sat down, picked up the chopsticks, and began to eat the now-cold dishes on the table.
Chloe Preston froze.
She watched for a few seconds before stepping forward, pulling a chair out, and sitting directly in front of him. Staring at him, she demanded, "What do you mean by this? Now you don’t want to eat with me anymore, is that it?"
Donovan Xavier’s voice was flat. "No, I just didn’t have an appetite earlier."
"Ha! No appetite? So you get one as soon as I leave?"
"Fine. If that’s how it’s going to be, then I guess we don’t need to eat together anymore. We don’t need to sleep together at night, either. I’ll go separate our things right now. From now on, we’ll sleep in separate rooms and live our own lives. That way, you won’t have to lose your appetite just by looking at me."
Her face was a mask of anger, and her eyes were growing moist. She turned and ran upstairs in her slippers.
Donovan Xavier set down his chopsticks.
...
「Upstairs, in the bedroom.」
Chloe Preston rushed around the room, pulling out all her clothes and belongings and stuffing them into several large bags. Finally, she grabbed her pillow and headed for the door.
CLICK—
The door was suddenly thrown open.
Donovan Xavier walked in. Seeing the scene before him, his brow furrowed.
Chloe Preston didn’t look at him. Dragging her bags, she stubbornly tried to leave.
Donovan Xavier slammed the door shut, stepped forward, and pulled her into his arms. "Stop this nonsense."
Chloe Preston glared at him with red-rimmed eyes. "Am I the one causing a scene?"
She pushed against him with all her might. "Don’t touch me."
"I was wrong."
Donovan Xavier held her tight, burying his head in the crook of her neck. He nuzzled her gently with the tip of his nose, his voice low and hoarse. "Chloe, don’t be angry. I admit I was wrong."
Tears welled in Chloe Preston’s eyes. She pounded on his chest, her voice choked with grievance. "I don’t even know what I did wrong! You treated me this way first thing in the morning. Weren’t we fine last night?"
"Even when you were so rough with me, I went along with everything, never once complaining that it was too much."
Donovan Xavier frowned. "That wasn’t being rough."
It’s a sign of affection.
Chloe Preston’s eyes brimmed with tears as she continued to push against him. "Don’t hold me. Let me go."
For a moment, Donovan Xavier didn’t know what to do. He held her hands, lowered his head, and kissed her lips. It was a soft, gentle kiss meant to soothe her.
Chloe Preston broke away from him.
Her eyes were red, and she wore a pout on her pretty face. A tear slid down, and she quickly wiped it away. She looked just like a small, furious, and heartbroken rabbit.
Chloe Preston bit her lip, her voice choked with sobs. "Donovan Xavier, what’s the point of this? Do you enjoy hurting me and then trying to soothe me a moment later?"
"When you’re angry, you deliberately give me the cold shoulder. Then when you feel like it, you come and try to win me over. What do you take me for!"
As she spoke, she tried to leave again.
Donovan Xavier reached out and pulled her back into his arms, kissing her tear-stained face and murmuring softly, "I was wrong. I was wrong, okay?"
"You’re pregnant, don’t get so worked up."
Chloe’s nose stung as tears threatened to fall again. She felt incredibly wronged. "You know I’m carrying your child, and you still treat me this way? Do you have any idea how much you’ve hurt me?"
Donovan Xavier continued to kiss her, his nose gently touching hers, his voice raspy. "I didn’t mean to treat you this way, it’s just..."
It’s just that I heard you calling another man’s name in your sleep. It made me feel... uncomfortable. Jealous.
Donovan Xavier reached out, wiped the last tears from the corners of her eyes, and said, "Chloe Preston, tell me. Besides me, have you ever loved any other man?"
"I want the truth. Don’t lie to me."
