The Broken Halo-Chapter 51: Concern & Worry
After Simon left the Hall of the Pallbearers, the six Pallbearers kept on looking at the door Simon just went through.
"Is it wise to keep him alive? Although he’s still weak and most likely not as talented as the others, he’s a threat that makes my tongue sour."
Deep Dusk- The Pallbearer with four crimson dots on her mask, voiced out her concern to True Night.
And First Dusk- The Pallbearer with six crimson dots on his mask, also shared the same concern as Deep Dusk.
"I agree with Deep Dusk. That kid is dangerous. Despite all that we did to him and despite being in the presence of six Demon Lords, he was always calm. There was no sign of fear in his gaze, and how is such a thing possible for a kid with a mixed bloodline of a lowly One-horned demon and demon cat?"
Deep Dusk nodded in agreement with the words of First Dusk.
"If he had a Superior or Supreme grade Noble bloodline or a Royal bloodline, we’d understand. But a kid with a Lesser Bloodline? That’s just abnormal."
"We’re not a hundred percent certain if his bloodline is a Lesser Bloodline. It experienced some changes when I tried extracting it." The Black Midnight- The Pallbearer with three crimson dots on his mask, spoke.
He was the Velari who kidnapped Simon and he was also the Pallbearer Simon glanced at before leaving. Simon recognized him by his aura despite the change in his mask.
Deep Dusk still shook her head despite the words of Black Midnight.
"Even if it experienced some change, do you mean to tell me that his bloodline would suddenly become a Noble bloodline or a Royal bloodline just because of that? I doubt it."
She tapped her index finger on the table in contemplation.
"Aside from his bloodline, there’s just something about him and that puts me off."
Black Midnight chuckled and shifted his gaze to where Simon had knelt. There were blood stains on the ground, and an outline of how Simon knelt and his movements appeared in his eyes.
"You mean the fact that he showed no anger or hatred at us even after all that we did to him?"
Deep Dusk nodded.
"Exactly. He definitely hates us, because who wouldn’t hate the people that tortured you? But he showed no signs of anger or hate."
First Dusk also looked at the blood stains at the center of the roundtable with a contemplating glint in his eyes behind the mask.
"And we know that he has not been trained in any way or form to either withstand torture or to be able to control his emotions in even the worst situations."
Deep Dusk completed the words First Dusk was about to speak.
"So, how is he able to do all these things when he has not even lived for sixteen years?"
"There’s something truly off about this kid, and I’m not comfortable with him being allowed to roam free in the clan. We should either kill him, let that pig have his way with him, or imprison him till he dies." Deep Dusk said emotionlessly.
There was a silence for a moment, not until soft but loud and heavy taps echoed in the hall.
The five Pallbearers all looked at True Night, and the demon spoke.
"He knows no fear and he’s always calm regardless of the situation he’s in. He’s able to control his emotions. And he can also withstand torture."
"These are all high quality traits of an assassin in case you’ve forgotten, and it’s why the Master said we should make him a member."
"Even some of our assassins with immense talents don’t have his qualities, but he has them. Besides, we’ll know what his true talents are in three days, and we’ll see what he’s capable of during the test."
"But-" Deep Dusk tried to interrupt, but True Night calmly raised a finger.
"Also, he has the soul-eating centipede inside of him. And it was the Master, not I, that modified it to kill him in the most painful way if he does anything to harm the organization."
"The Master already knows that he’s a plant that could become a thorny weed and not a fruitful tree in the clan. So, he has taken his precautions and he would keep on observing the boy in his own way."
"We should trust the Master."
Every Pallbearer went silent at the words of True Night, but a few seconds later, Still Midnight spoke- The Pallbearer with two crimson dots on his mask, the second strongest Pallbearer.
"A blade left sheathed at our backs is still a blade."
Still Midnight’s voice was that of a woman, and it was extremely pleasing and soothing to the ears. However, it was a voice that many demons feared.
Every Pallbearer looked at Still Midnight with varying expressions at her words, and the gaze of True Night became slightly cold and threatening.
"It is the will of the Master. Are you saying he does not know what he’s doing?"
Still Midnight shook her head softly with folded arms and said calmly.
"The Master is always right."
"Hmm."
True Night stared at her for a few seconds, then he shifted his gaze to the other Pallbearers, especially Deep Dusk.
"Like I said before, you don’t have to worry about him so much. The Master is handling it, and there would be demons observing him at every corner."
He shifted his gaze to Black Midnight, the Velari who kidnapped Simon.
"What we should be concerned about is finding where Zaglur kept the Devourer’s blood essence."
He gestured at both Deep Dusk and Black Midnight.
"Both of you will take on the task of locating the blood essence. Either we find where Zaglur hid the blood essence he found or we find another one or a substitute. Regardless of which, it is of utmost importance to the clan."
Both Deep Dusk and Black Midnight bowed slightly.
"Understood."
True Night nodded. "We can go our separate ways. This meeting is over."
