The Billionaire Twins Need A New Mommy!-Chapter 792: Don’t Look
Meanwhile...
"Ugh..." Kiara grunted as she held her throbbing head, pushing herself up to sit.
Once her vision cleared, she finally noticed the room she was in. She glanced down at the bed and at the other person lying beside her.
Efraim, Henrik’s son.
"Hey." She reached out, wincing as pain throbbed through her head. Shaking it lightly, she gently tried to rouse him. "Are you okay?"
Forcing herself to move despite the pounding in her skull, she scooted closer and checked Efraim’s pulse. Fortunately, it was steady.
"It seems he just passed out as well," she whispered before scanning the bedroom.
It was simple but spacious.
Kiara crawled to the edge of the bed and dragged herself toward the door. She twisted the knob and pulled, but it only rattled.
"I knew it," she breathed, looking around more carefully. When she spotted the window, she approached it and slid the curtain aside.
Aside from the thick smoke rising in the distance, there was no one on the ground below. She let out another deep breath, biting her lip. She had passed out earlier, but she remembered hearing Lola’s voice.
"First Sister isn’t here," she muttered, worry creeping in.
She knew Lola had already taken the twins — Kiara had checked on them out of instinct. So she assumed Lola wouldn’t still be around. However, it seemed Lola had come back for her.
Kiara pinched the bridge of her nose as her head throbbed again. She glanced at the bed where the boy lay, then began searching the room thoroughly — every corner, every drawer.
She had no idea what was happening, but she knew she needed something to defend herself in case someone came to move them. Kiara had learned self-defense growing up, and after she married Hugo, he had taught her a few more tricks.
But against professionals, she wasn’t confident. Not to mention, with a boy beside her, she felt responsible.
"Here!" she exclaimed softly when she spotted a paper clip tucked between the pages of a Bible in one of the drawers.
Twisting the clip open, she marched back to the door and pressed her ear against it. She listened for any sign of a guard, then crouched to inspect the lock. There was a small hole, but not enough to confirm whether someone was outside.
"Doesn’t matter," she whispered as she inserted the straightened paper clip into the lock.
Kiara carefully twisted it, holding her breath as she maneuvered the pin.
Hugo said I just have to do this...
Click.
Her breath hitched at the sound. She gulped, nerves prickling as she stepped back. Mustering her courage, she slowly opened the door and peeked outside.
Surprisingly, there was no one guarding it.
"Was it because we’re not a threat?" She murmured, thinking they truly underestimated her.
But then again, it was just Kiara and a boy.
"No, no. Don’t get distracted," she told herself, shaking her head. She quietly closed the door again and hurried back to the bed. "Hey, hey."
She shook Efraim more firmly this time, already pulling him upright. Thankfully, she didn’t need to carry him unconscious as he began to groan.
Slowly, Efraim opened his eyes, brows furrowing in confusion.
"Who—"
"We have to move," Kiara urged, looking at him with determination. "Can you get up?"
He blinked a few times before he recognized the same lady who had come to his room and stayed with him.
Kiara helped him sit up, and he looked around.
"Ma’am, where are we?"
"I don’t know, but we have to leave this place." She gave him a sharp nod. "Don’t worry. Just stay with me, alright?"
Fear and worry flickered in Efraim’s glistening eyes, but he nodded and reached for her hand.
Together, they made their way out of the room.
Kiara looked left and right, squeezing his hand tightly. She led him toward a nearby window to check their surroundings, scanning the area to get a sense of the building’s structure.
Somehow, this place doesn’t seem guarded. If there aren’t any guards, maybe we can leave safely.
Even so, she remained cautious despite their urgency.
First, I have to reach the ground floor. From the looks of it, we’re probably on the third or fourth floor.
After what felt like an eternity, Kiara and Efraim found a staircase. She peeked down first before leading them carefully to the lower floor. They continued moving, knowing they needed to get out of the building as quickly as possible.
But when they reached the second floor, Kiara heard footsteps near the stairs.
She froze and peeked around the corner.
Someone was hurrying toward the staircase.
"Oh, no!" she panicked, turning to Efraim. "Come!"
Clutching his hand tightly, she hurried down the hallway, searching for somewhere to hide. Unlike the upper floors with bedrooms, this level had long corridors and no doors.
"Ma’am..." Efraim whispered, noticing the pale look on her face.
Suddenly, her steps skidded to a halt.
Efraim stopped as well, eyes widening as he looked ahead. Shadows approached from the end of the hallway.
"We have to—" she began, only to turn the other way and freeze again at the sound of more hurried footsteps and voices.
A second later, both Kiara and Efraim stood rooted in place.
At the opposite end stood three men dressed in strange outfits resembling the inner armor of knights from long ago.
The moment their eyes met, Kiara instinctively pulled Efraim into her arms.
"Please don’t..." she whispered.
Efraim, who should have been just as frightened, looked up at her instead.
She held him tightly, her body curling around his like a shield. Attempts on his life were nothing new — but this was the first time someone looked more terrified than he did, yet still chose to protect him.
His lips quivered as he looked ahead, watching one of the men pull something out.
"Please!" Kiara shut her eyes and crouched, cradling the boy against her chest, her hand protecting the back of his head.
Before a gunshot rang out, she heard a voice.
"Kiara!!"
Her eyes flew open as she turned toward the sound.
There, she saw Hugo.
He stood at the other end of the hallway, rifle raised and aimed in their direction.
"Don’t..." he breathed out loud. "... look!"
Then, the muzzle flashed several times.
BANG!
