The Bigshot Married Himself to the Heiress-Chapter 489 - 490: An Interesting Woman
"Can you tell everyone who you are?" the Prosecutor asked.
"I am Xenon Lewis, a psychiatrist. I am the one who conducted Sabrina Johnson’s psychiatric assessment!" As soon as Xenon finished speaking, the courtroom became chaotic, and people started whispering to one another.
"Order, order!" the judge banged his gavel, maintaining order.
"So, can you tell the judge whether Sabrina Johnson truly has a mental illness?"
"I don’t know."
As soon as Xenon uttered these words, gasps of surprise rippled through the crowd.
"Didn’t you conduct Sabrina Johnson’s psychiatric assessment? How could you not know whether she has a mental illness?"
Chatter erupted below, as no one expected such a dramatic turn of events.
The opposing side had found a psychiatrist to conduct a mental illness evaluation, yet he had no idea whether Sabrina Johnson actually had a mental illness.
The Prosecutor calmly asked, leading the judge, jury, and audience step by step to the result he needed, "Please answer me, why did you say you don’t know if Sabrina Johnson has a mental illness?"
"Although I issued the psychiatric assessment report, I never actually conducted a psychiatric evaluation on Sabrina Johnson. So, I don’t know if she has a mental illness or not..." Xenon said.
"You’re saying you provided false testimony?" the Prosecutor asked sharply.
Xenon hurriedly defended himself. "I didn’t provide false testimony. I don’t know anything."
"But today, at the trial, a man submitted your psychiatric assessment report to the judge, claiming that Sabrina Johnson has a mental illness and requesting the judge to exempt her from criminal punishment."
"Do you know? Because of your psychiatric assessment report, Sabrina Johnson could be exempt from criminal punishment!"
Xenon said, "I really don’t know anything. Three days ago, a man approached me and gave me 75 thousand, hoping that I would issue a psychiatric assessment report for him."
"It was my wife’s and my 15th wedding anniversary, and I wanted to give her a diamond necklace, but I didn’t have the money. Just then, someone came along and said they would give me 75 thousand as long as I issued a psychiatric assessment report for them. Although I knew there were problems, I couldn’t resist the temptation and agreed."
Xenon took out the diamond necklace that Adrian Desmond had given him from his pocket and confessed sincerely, "This is the diamond necklace I bought with the 75 thousand that man gave me. I originally intended it as a wedding anniversary gift for my wife..."
"Here, take it!" Xenon handed over the diamond necklace, turning his head away with a pained expression, as if he was reluctant to part with it.
The Prosecutor took the diamond necklace from Xenon’s hand, but Xenon tightly held onto the other end, unwilling to let go.
The Prosecutor frowned and tugged again, but Xenon still clung stubbornly to it, his eyes full of reluctance to part with the necklace.
The audience in the courtroom laughed.
"What are you doing?" the Prosecutor asked.
"Can I get this diamond necklace back?"
"That’s for the court to decide!"
The courtroom door was pushed open from the outside, and a burly woman entered. She was gasping for breath, her face flushed from strenuous exercise.
She shouted loudly, "My dear, hand over the diamond necklace! My dear, it’s the thought that counts. Even though I didn’t receive the diamond necklace, I’m still very happy. Thank you, my wonderful husband, I love you! Even without the diamond necklace, I still love you!"
"My love..." Xenon cried dramatically.
"Darling!"
The two openly displayed their affection in front of the reporters, right before the eyes of all the people of Sileria City.
"Dearest, haven’t you always wanted a diamond necklace? If you hand it over, you won’t have it anymore."
"It’s okay, my love. We don’t want that kind of ill-gotten money! We should be upright people."
Xenon’s wife glared at Sabrina Johnson on the stand and scolded, "Sabrina Johnson, that ungrateful, despicable person! The Johnson family raised her, and she killed her adoptive father! Not only that, she even slandered him. Pah! Just look at her ugly face. Her adoptive father must have been blind to ignore his beautiful wife and instead fall for her overdone, plastic-surgery face..."
Sabrina Johnson’s case had caused a huge sensation and attracted significant public attention. Anyone with internet access, a mobile phone, or who had read the newspapers would know about her case to some extent.
As a gossip-loving auntie and Xenon’s wife, Iris Lewis had been following the case avidly.
When Iris insulted someone, she really hit where it hurt; Pauline Briggs was no match for her.
"My dear, even if I don’t have a diamond necklace to wear, I won’t let you help her escape legal punishment! People like her should be in jail if they’re alive! If they’re dead, they should go to the eighteen levels of hell! Want to go to a psychiatric hospital? That’s a place for good people. You, a rotten-hearted little harlot, can only dream of going there!"
"Pretending to be mentally ill? You think by faking it in court, you really are mentally ill? Do you think we’re all idiots?"
Iris walked onto the stand and said to the judge, "Your Honor, I am the Head Nurse of Sileria City Psychiatric Hospital. I’ve been working at the psychiatric hospital for over twenty years. My daily work involves dealing with patients with mental disorders. Even my husband, the psychiatrist, might not understand the symptoms of mentally ill patients as well as I do."
"Sabrina Johnson’s act just now—I could tell it was fake from a mile away."
The Prosecutor followed up on Iris’s statement. "Can you describe to everyone what it looks like when a mentally ill person is having an episode?"
Iris looked into the camera, her expression solemn, and said, "My name is Iris Lewis. My husband is the psychiatrist Xenon Lewis. I have been the Head Nurse at Sileria City Psychiatric Hospital for over twenty years. When I graduated from nursing school, I was assigned there. When I found out I was assigned to a psychiatric hospital, I cried all night."
"My thoughts at the time were the same as yours are now. In my mind, mentally ill patients weren’t good people; they were all a bunch of crazies, lunatics. I was a delicate young girl. How could I possibly survive there?"
The crowd looked at her burly appearance and snickered, laughing unkindly.
Xenon said unhappily, "My wife was very beautiful when she was young... It’s just that she had to deal with patients every day. How could she do her job if she was so gentle? So, my wife desperately gained weight and even joined a grappling class. That’s how she ended up looking like this!"
"You shut your mouth! Don’t interrupt when I’m speaking!" Iris scolded.
"Yes, dear!" Xenon wilted, hanging his head like an obedient little dog.
Facing so many cameras, Iris felt like a big star; she was incredibly excited.
