The Bigshot Married Himself to the Heiress-Chapter 478 - 479: Master Leland’s Visit
Seeing her father’s condition, Cynthia Leland felt a wave of bitterness in her heart. Everything had been fine. Father had finally left the world of violence behind, and they were living a peaceful life. But then came Sabrina Johnson, who turned the Leland Family upside down.
"What in the world do you want?" Cynthia could no longer contain her fear and directed her anger at the police.
One of the older policemen said, "Miss Leland, we received a report that the Leland Family stole four bodies from our police department. The report claims Master Leland buried those bodies as if they were Leland Family members, right here in Emerald Garden. We are here to investigate this matter."
"Those four bodies are connected to a severe poisoning case, and the investigation hadn’t been completed. Our police department is in a difficult position without the bodies."
Emerald Garden was a public cemetery. Since the Leland Family had been cast out of their clan, their ancestors’ remains could not be buried in the ancestral tomb. Master Leland had then found a Geomancy Expert, who surveyed the land and found a suitable burial site for the remains.
Cynthia Leland cursed, "Bullshit! Why would we steal bodies? If you’re trying to frame us, come up with a more plausible excuse!"
"It’s easy to verify whether the bodies were stolen. Those four individuals were poisoned. Even if cremated, toxins can still be detected on the bones... We need the Leland Family’s cooperation to open the coffins for examination..."
Cynthia shouted, "Get out!" She would never agree to such an unreasonable request.
"Miss Leland, please reconsider!"
"I’ve thought it over countless times! Now get the hell out!" Cynthia Leland was infuriated by these people who wanted to dig up their Leland Family ancestral graves.
"Miss Leland, if those four sets of remains truly do not belong to the Leland Family, would you want them to receive the offerings meant for your ancestors?"
"We promise that if those remains do not belong to the Leland Family, the police will do everything in our power to help you find your Leland Family ancestors’ remains."
"Get out! All of you, get out!" Cynthia roared, unable to listen to them anymore.
Master Leland stammered, but no one listened to him. He slammed the armrest of his wheelchair, thereby putting an end to the argument.
Everyone looked at Master Leland, but no one could understand what he was saying.
"Dad, what are you saying? We can’t hear you clearly."
Morris brought over paper and a pen, saying, "Master Leland, please write it down!"
Master Leland looked at the blank paper, took the pen, and with trembling hands, wrote, "Dig up the graves!"
"Dad, how can we just dig up our Leland Family graves whenever someone demands it?" Cynthia did not agree.
Although I can’t speak, my mind is clear, Master Leland thought. Today’s events seem premeditated. I could refuse to let them dig. But if the police are telling the truth, and the remains in the Leland Family ancestral tomb are not our ancestors but some random corpses, then the Leland Family will be the ones to suffer. So, I also want to know whether the remains Adrian Desmond returned to us are indeed those of my ancestors. If not... I will not let Adrian Desmond off!
Morris led some men to the tomb, while Dr. Godfried was administering acupuncture to Master Leland. He shook his head, not even bothering to repeat his usual reprimands about Master Leland not taking care of his health.
"Dr. Godfried, how is my dad? Can he be cured?"
Dr. Godfried replied irritably, "I’ve told you all countless times that a patient in his condition must not be agitated! Yet you never take my advice to heart. In Master Leland’s current state, even if the legendary physician Hua Tuo were alive today, it would be useless."
"Dad..." Cynthia began to cry.
"What are you crying for? I’m not dead yet," Master Leland suddenly spoke.
"Dad, are you better?"
Master Leland had not recovered. His eye was still askew and his mouth twisted—clear symptoms of his stroke. He was merely able to speak again.
"Don’t move! You still have needles in your face," Dr. Godfried reminded him.
Master Leland said nothing more. He sat there with a grim expression, waiting for Morris. If the remains in the Leland Family ancestral tomb aren’t truly ours, then Adrian Desmond is not just insidious but utterly vile to have done such a despicable thing!
Morris returned. The stroke-afflicted Master Leland actually shot to his feet. "What happened?"
Morris stood there with his head lowered, not speaking.
"Speak up! What’s going on?"
Not daring to look Master Leland in the eye, Morris mustered the courage to say, "The police brought detection equipment. The on-site tests showed that there were indeed toxins remaining on the bones..."
Master Leland collapsed back into his wheelchair with a THUD, his facial muscles trembling. Dr. Godfried quickly removed the needles from Master Leland’s face, fearing they would break off inside.
Cynthia asked, "So those four sets of remains really aren’t our Leland Family ancestors?"
"If the Leland Family ancestors were never poisoned, then those four sets of poisoned remains are not theirs," Morris said in a low voice.
"To the Johnson Family!" Master Leland roared.
"Dad, your health isn’t good. You should rest..." Cynthia advised.
"To the Johnson Family!" Master Leland insisted.
"Fine, fine... let’s go, alright?" Cynthia said, exasperated.
So, Master Leland personally went to the Johnson Family, intending to confront Sienna Johnson and Adrian Desmond about their deception. Doing such insidious things, are they not afraid of retribution?
Adrian Desmond had deliberately stayed at the Johnson Family home today, anticipating Master Leland’s arrival.
When Master Leland arrived, Adrian Desmond didn’t prevent him from entering, merely had him shown to the reception hall and left him waiting there.
In the reception hall, Master Leland had already drunk a bellyful of tea. If it weren’t for his limited mobility, he would have smashed the teacup by now.
"Where are they? It’s been an hour since I arrived! Where’s Adrian Desmond? Where’s Sienna Johnson? Where in the blazes did they disappear to?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
The housekeeper, Mr. Henry, explained with an air of calm respect, "Our Young Master-in-law is currently busy and cannot step away. If Master Leland is in a hurry, perhaps it would be better to return another day."
"Tell Adrian Desmond to come and see me right now!"
"Yes, sir!"
The housekeeper, Mr. Henry, departed with a perfectly polite demeanor. However, another hour passed, and he did not return. This time, they were completely ignored, with neither the housekeeper nor any servants attending to them.
Master Leland had never experienced such humiliation.
In the Johnson Family’s back garden, Adrian Desmond was leading a small red pony by the reins, as Curly, dressed in pink riding clothes, learned how to ride it.
"Daddy, am I riding well?"
"Not bad." Adrian Desmond kept his eyes glued to his daughter, afraid she might have an accident.
"Then let go, I want to ride by myself!" Curly urged. She craved the feeling of galloping freely, her heart itching with the anticipation of riding alone.
Adrian Desmond knew his daughter’s fearless temperament; if he really let go, she would likely try to make the pony jump hurdles.
"The space here is too small for the horse to run properly," he said. "In a little while, we’ll go to the riding arena."
