The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 156: Selfish.
~Zarek’s POV~
I was half asleep, half tossing and turning on my bed because thoughts of Dahlia had refused to let me be when a quiet knock sounded on my door. I froze for a second, my eyes widening as they found the wall clock overhead.
2:26am.
Who the fuck visits someone by this time? Who the hell disturbs their Alpha by this time?
Frustration made my blood boil as I slowly rose from the softness of my bed, snatched a free tunic and then draped it over my head. I then tiptoed to the door, pressing my ears against it to check for any undead sounds. There was none besides the steady uneven breaths of someone who sounded like they may have run a mile.
Nothing about the sound felt threatening, but I was still antsy seeing as I couldn’t recognize their scent.
The knock came again, snapping me out of my reverie and in annoyance, I forcefully pulled the door open only to freeze in shock when I saw who it was.
My jaw dropped. "Elodie?" I gasped, "Elodie, is that you?"
The strange woman in front of me smiled as tears streamed down her face and then she nodded, causing her blonde strands to dance and fluff around her small frame animatedly.
"Yes, it is I... it’s Elodie, Alpha Zarek." She croaked out, bowing a little at the end of her sentence.
Despite my obvious joy, plus the conflicting thoughts raging inside my head, I asked; "What are you doing here?" And she laughed, causing me to gasp again as I took a step back, fearing that this was all a dream and that she was still in a coma, when she finally spoke up again.
She said; "I came looking for Orion but I cannot remember the way that leads to his manor."
Her voice...
It was the same.
She is the same...
A choked sob slipped past my lips and without a care as to why she was here or if this was a trap, I pulled her into a hug, my heart swelling and breaking and swelling again when she hugged me back.
I cannot remember for how long we stood there basking in the presence of each other after so many years of torn friendship, but after a while, I finally pulled away, smiled down at her and said;
"Give me a minute!"
I then rushed into my room, changed into more suitable clothes and stepped out to find her leaning against the wall, beautiful as ever, not even looking a day older than the last time I saw her alive and well. Which was strange.
But we’re werewolves— which in itself was a strange phenomenon.
I led Elodie through the pack, but as we went, I couldn’t help but feel a little bit of anger— anger directed at the guards and every personnel whose job is to protect this pack— because what do you mean a pale skinned, blonde haired woman with shiny red eyes slipped into my pack and none of them saw her do that?
I shook this thought away as we arrived at Orion’s manor and then I turned to her; "This is it. Do you want me to come in with you?"
Elodie didn’t think about it for a second. She quickly nodded, her eyes shining with excitement. "Yes." She said softly and I agreed, wordlessly leading her into the house.
We passed a few guards on our way, most of which bowed to me but glared at her in confusion. They probably do not recognize her anymore, and something about the way she shrunk into me as we strode past made me realize why she’d asked me to come along— because she had expected hostility—and that was exactly what she would’ve gotten if I wasn’t here.
We found Orion in his sitting room, staring out of one of his large windows. He had his back to us and didn’t even turn around when he drawled; "Alpha, isn’t it too late to pay me a visit?"
I shrugged then looked down to wink at Elodie who had still not said a word yet. "Yes, it is. But I had something I wanted to talk to you about."
Orion still didn’t turn around but I could see that his shoulders were tense— too tense— it made me sad on his behalf. Even his voice shook with emotions he could barely contain, and I instinctively knew that it had something to do with the woman standing beside me.
The same woman who has still refused to speak.
"I heard you went to Hollowfang pack today even after I asked you not to do anything stupid." I drawled, noticing how he stiffened, even his hands holding onto the windowsill looked chalk-white and pale.
If only you would just turn around, you fucking nincompoop!
He took in a deep breath and then raised his head to look up at the ceiling, and when he spoke up this time, his voice sounded distant. Cold. He sounded like he had no strength left in him to fight.
He muttered; "I went to see her. I wanted to be sure that the rumours were true... See, Zarek, I believe she would never forgive me but I wanted to see her one more time, hoping that maybe... just maybe the sight of her alive and well would give me the will to—"
"Why don’t you tell her these things?" I asked, interrupting him and watching him shudder before pressing his head against the window frame.
"I didn’t even get the chance to talk to her." He whispered.
In annoyance, I shook my head. I noticed Elodie shaking her head beside me, pleading with me to not force him to turn around but I was done with their lovers game— especially since my own lover was nowhere to be found— so I snapped;
"I mean, now. Tell her about it now!"
Orion spun around, the irritation evident in his eyes but as soon as those eyes landed on the woman beside me, he froze. A shiny object— I don’t know what it was— that had been pressed into his hand clattered to the floor and he slowly began to take shaky steps forward, his eyes wild.
"Elodie..?" He drawled.
"Orion." She whispered back.
That was the last thing I saw and the last thing I heard because the next minute, they were running into each other’s arms, sobbing and kissing as if their lives depended on it, and further irritating me more than I already was.
But despite my annoyance and obvious disgust at their lovey-dovey-ness, deep down, I was glad. I was glad for him... glad that she was fine and healthy, and that their once broken family now had a chance at being complete.
...and most of all, I was glad because finally, Orion would be out of Dahlia’s life for good.
Call me selfish, I don’t care. Now, all I had to do was find my mate.
’Oh please moon goddess, mother to all, protect Dahlia, protect Amara and guide them to safety. Keep them alive and well until I find them... and even after I’ve found them.’
