The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 155: Kai’s rage.
~Dahlia’s POV~
I pressed my ear against the door, hoping to see if I could hear a thing or two... or anything at all that could give me an inkling of what was happening downstairs. But I didn’t.
All I heard was muffled screams and chaos, and indecipherable voices talking over the other. However, the loudest amongst them was Kai, and for some reason, he sounded like he was the angriest as well.
Curiosity gnawed at me as I pressed myself further against the door until I suddenly felt a pull on my dress. Frowning slightly, I looked down to see that it was Amara. She had left the bed where I’d asked her to sit still, and now she was looking up at me with a look of pure confusion.
"Mommy, what’s happening?" She asked innocently and I sighed.
To focus on my child, I momentarily moved away from the door, crouched in front of her and ruffled her hair gently, smiling when she chuckled. "It’s nothing, okay?" I muttered, "nothing that you should worry your pretty head about."
I watched her nod, saw the small smile that graced her face, but I didn’t miss the tiny frown creasing her forehead, or the way her eyes occasionally darted to the door as if expecting someone to barge into the room any moment from now.
Deep down, I hated that my baby had to witness things like this. I hated that ever since her birth, our lives have been nothing but one rollercoaster or the other.
I hoped to make it up to her, to finally get her out of all this chaos soon. With a sigh, I pulled her into a hug and held her close, not pulling away. I whispered; "Beta Orion is here. But he’s not here for us. He doesn’t know we’re here."
"He’s here for that woman." Amara finished and I nodded. "Yes."
Silence descended upon us as we held each other close, but it was soon disrupted when Alpha Kai’s loud voice rang through the entire house. He boomed; "To your room, NOW!" causing both Amara and I to flinch in surprise.
"Alpha Kai is angry," she whispered and this time, I gulped before nodding.
Ignoring the chaos happening right outside the door and everything else that came with it, I picked up my baby and returned to the bed. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
However, we had just settled into the bed when suddenly, someone barged into the room and I spun around quickly, my heart racing with surprise when I saw that it was Elodie.
She was panting, her hair seemed disheveled, her face soaked with tears. She took one glance at the surprised look on mine and Amara’s faces, and heck, I had even begun to think that she would go back outside; but to my utmost shock, she slammed the door shut behind her and rushed over to me, sobbing.
"Wha—"
"Kai doesn’t care about me anymore!" She sobbed loudly, "he doesn’t want me to have a conversation with Orion. He doesn’t want me to talk to him or see him, and threatens to send me packing if I ever give him..." her words were interrupted by hiccups and I watched sadly as she dropped her head, sobbing uncontrollably.
For a moment, I was so stunned I couldn’t even move nor speak. But the more I watched her cry, the more something within my heart felt like it was unravelling. Twisting. Aching.
I slowly but tentatively draped my arms around her, half expecting that she would push me away. But to my utmost surprise, she didn’t. Instead, she pulled me impossibly closer, sobbing into my chest as she continued to mutter something along the lines of; "It wasn’t his fault," over and over again.
I had no idea what she was rambling about or had any ideas on how to make her feel better so I simply held her. Tears slipped into my eyes, burning the corners of my eyes, and Jesus, I had no idea what I was crying for. I had no idea why her sadness affected me this much.
I gently patted her hair, took away some stray strands from her face and whispered; "Stop crying please."
Elodie looked up at me then, and I noticed the exact moment she froze. Her red eyes trailed along the lines of my face as if she was memorising it, tucking it into memory.
"Elodie...?" I whispered, afraid to raise my voice. "Stop."
I frowned slightly and she blinked slowly as if in a daze, then she pulled out of my hold, straightened her dress and said; "I’ve made my decision."
I cocked my eyebrows. "What?"
"I’ll go to Orion. I want to hear what he has to say. I want to get to see my daughter too, and I do not care if Kai bans me from ever coming back here because of that." She declared, and I froze.
"Would you be able to live with yourself if Amara is suddenly taken from you?"
Slowly, I shook my head. "No."
"Good." She snorted derisively. "Then Kai can kiss my arse!"
The change in her attitude made me balk. I stumbled backward wondering if she was the same person sobbing her eyes out only moments ago, and when I decided that she was, I tilted my head to the side, watching her.
"Shadowfang pack isn’t exactly friendly." I mused under my breath but ignoring me, she scoffed.
"Doi look like I care?"
Again, I shook my head. "No."
"Exactly!" She exclaimed, and with that, sashayed out of the room like she owned the place— and oh yes, I nearly forgot. She indeed owns the place.
Bloody hell?
—
It was sometime around midnight when a knock suddenly sounded by the door, forcefully prying me out of my sleep.
I slowly peeled my eyes open, fixed my dress and rushed to the door to pry it open only to stop dead in my tracks when I saw a shirtless Alpha Kai leaning against the doorframe, his gleaming red eyes unusually darker, and despite the chilly night air, I couldn’t help but notice the trail of sweat running down the middle of his packs. And the way his messy hair clung to his forehead like it’s been soaked in grease.
Oh how breathtakingly hot this man could be...
I gulped, hoping that this way, I could swallow up all the wanton thoughts flying around my head, or control the weird electricity zapping along my spine. And you know what? I failed woefully. So instead, I asked; "What are you doing here?"
Alpha Kai’s eyes roved my face intently then they dropped to trail over the curve of my neck.
I squirmed uncontrollably when I noticed what he was staring at— my jugular, the place where my mate should mark— and I saw him visibly gulp before turning his attention away.
"Is Elodie in there?" He asked softly— to softly— it made my insides melt into a puddle.
Feeling disgusted at myself, I shook my head to rid myself of these thoughts and he probably took that as my answer because then his eyes widened; "She’s not there?"
In a flash, all the stupid feelings I felt earlier disappeared, and in their place was panic. I quickly shook my head. "She isn’t. Isn’t she in her room?"
"I’ve checked there!" He snarled. "I’ve checked every corner of the fortress. She isn’t there."
Well that explains his sweating...
Dahlia, focus!
It took me a moment to actually ’focus’ and when I did, her earlier words rang in my head, reminding me of the last decision she’d made before leaving my room hours ago.
My eyes widened as a surge of panic flooded my veins and with shaky limbs, I stepped back—more so I could look into Alpha Kai’s eyes, and then I whispered;
"She must’ve gone to Shadowfang pack."
Alpha Kai stilled.
"She mentioned something like that earlier but I didn’t think she would go through with it. She—"
He didn’t wait for me to finish my statement, he didn’t even say another word to me as he turned and walked away, but to my utmost surprise, he didn’t walk in the direction that led to the front door. Instead, he went to his room and then he slammed the door shut.
I waited for a minute then two... then fifteen... thinking that he had probably gone to change into better clothing, thinking that he would go after his sister who might be in danger.
He didn’t come out. I didn’t hear a sound. And an eternity later, I tiptoed to his door only to freeze in my tracks when I heard him snoring peacefully.
He’d fallen asleep. He’d let her go, and now I was sure as hell that he meant it when he said he wouldn’t care.
And that frightened me more than his rage.
