Chapter 161: Power I

"What benefits do you think I get? For one, our influence isn’t that big and that’s why the others are trying to get the Isolde Dusk to finally join or rejoin," Miret said.

Severin couldn’t help but notice that he didn’t directly answer his question, but he let it pass without saying anything. "They want the Isolde Dusk to join a region? Why?" freёnovelkiss.com

"Because any region we join, we get a boost in power. Think about it. The Isolde Dusk, by being the Isolde Dusk, is already powerful. But now think of any region in the Empire controlling it. Do you know how powerful such a High Lord will be?"

The Empire is split into four regions. Each region is controlled by a High Lord. All the other nobles are under the High Lords and all the High Lords are under the Emperor.

It was simple and yet complicated at the same time because only the Emperor has the direct power of ordering anyone around. Most of the other nobles under the High Lords don’t even listen to them.

Miret smiled. "But only us five guardians can make the decision on this. Even the Emperor won’t directly involve himself, even though he is also supporting one of the five guardians."

Derrick frowned, looking confused. "Wait. But the Emperor has some of his forces’ headquarters here. Why won’t he make direct commands like you should stay at sea or join a region?"

Everyone turned to him.

And from the look of it, Severin saw that Julius and Ethan weren’t as confused as the others.

Severin cleared his throat. "It’s not that easy. Although this is an Empire, the Emperor doesn’t have absolute power. No one in the world has absolute power and that’s because everyone has a measure of power. Etherion users made sure there’s something close to evenly distributed power.

"Each region is already big, like kingdoms, and over time they have evolved into not really needing the Emperor as they used to. But the Emperor didn’t like that. So what does the Emperor do? He created agencies and such that are only absolutely loyal to the capital.

"So, there’s some kind of conflict between the noble powers and the Imperial powers. They’re trying to counter each other’s power at all times, but the Emperor would always have the upper hand."

Derrick’s eyes widened. "The Emperor doesn’t have absolute power?"

"Now, Isolde Dusk is a new powerful entity that can add to the power of any region. The Isolde Dusk doesn’t work for the Emperor. It’s like a small region on its own."

Derrick nodded together with the other non-nobles among them.

’..and that’s why the Emperor has a string of agents and powers that secretly back him. They played and interfere with the politics of the regions in secret. Playing them as he wished..he is still the most powerful..’

Miret continued.

"I and one other wanted to remain at sea, while two other people want us to join a region. There’s only one deciding factor and he’s a brute, fighting-obsessed bastard.

"He said he would join whichever wins this year’s Dusk."

"Dusk?"

"It’s the competition between heirs. The fighting-obsessed bastard said he won’t join. He’ll only join the winner and join their decision on if they should join a region or not."

Severin knew all this before. In the book, Miret won due to the help from his heir, Lucas Dawn.

After Lucas Dawn burst someone out of prison, he was tracked down by Miret and he offered him to fight for him so his crimes wouldn’t be taken up.

Lucas Dawn won in such a way that he burned down a huge chunk out of the place.

Severin grimaced. ’...maybe I should have gotten Lucas into my team then...I know coming here won’t be easy but why did he want us to fight? Can’t he get a stronger team?..it’s so suspicious..’

Miret smiled. "And me and my ally don’t know whose team should represent our interests. My own or her own?"

Severin raised his brows. He knew what was coming.

Miret shrugged. "So we decided to check it out. Our teams would fight each other and the winning team will participate in the Dawn competition."

Severin smiled. "So, all that about choosing me as your heir is just so you can still put me in a room to compete for the title?"

Miret raised his brows. "Of course. Nothing is by chance and I don’t take a bet first and then wish for good luck. I have already gathered a lot of teams. Both from the prison and outside.

"Be the winner and you’ll be able to fight in the Dusk and Isolde Dusk will remain at sea. Win-win."

Severin raised his brows. "Win-win? I’m sorry, Lord Miret, but I don’t see any win here. You will get your wish of Isolde Dusk and you will get your influence more than doubled here in Isolde Dusk, making you the unofficial ’king.’"

Miret smiled gently. But every expression that his face made was always cold. Even his smiles were cold. "You want compensation? Isn’t it enough that you are here? Don’t you want to train and get stronger?"

Severin didn’t say anything. Not at first.

Miret did raise a good point. They had already been cut off from Darius Faulkner for the moment, leaving Severin a chance to breathe and prepare his own counter.

But he still needed another thing from Miret. He wanted the power to fight Darius Faulkner, the man that threatened his life.

Severin shook his head. "It’s not enough."

Miret shrugged. "If you can win and be the representing team, then I will give you what you want. We can negotiate then. But for now? Just do as you’re told."

"Very well," Severin agreed for his team.

Miret clapped. "Good! Good!"

"It should be an easy test. Come. Follow me."

Miret stood up and led them outside.

Even with the metal covering, there was some kind of light that covered the outside, just like dusk.
