Chapter 49: SysDi 49: Return to Sender
Stupid idea.
This is a terribly stupid idea.
Iva had reminded Evan the night before that anything sneaky in the eyes of their current law is going to be both risky and stupid.
Was Evan deterred? The night they were talking about it, not really.
In the morning, kind of absolutely.
Still, Evan had already said it. And because of his own morals of keeping his word every time, he wakes up on the morning after a long night’s rest. It’s how mornings usually go, except...
Well, he is now preparing to go do some sneaking.
He finished his routines first, something he wasn’t able to do because he had been gone for three days without intending to.
The fields were empty, so he can skip it. The berries can be picked and made into a jam. It’s the last batch he can harvest. All the jam he will be making will be kept in their storage for their own use from now on. His mom isn’t around to sell them anyway.
The garden fared better than he had expected. The plants needed watering. When he was done with watering them, he used a little shovel to cultivate the soil a little bit to let them breathe, the same way he had learned before.
All his routines were done in a blink of an eye. The two books that he had borrowed lay on his bedside table when he got back in the house. He sighs. He had been wanting to read them but it looks like he can’t even do that.
He took the books. If things go well, maybe he can ask the librarian to extend the due.
Walking out the house, he wasn’t expecting a person to stop him in his tracks. The guy is covered with clothes from head to toe, in shades of red and purple.
Evan’s eyes widened as realization dawned on him. Spire’s letter. Sir Theobald’s letter too. They had been waiting for his reply.
Uh oh.
"Evan Rotewed?" The messenger asked, in a deep baritone.
Evan nods his head. "Do you need something?"
The messenger sighs. "There was no one at home for three days. I am to return after you give me your reply to the masters. Do you have it?"
Evan looks at him then the door. He scratched the back of his head. "Uh, not really. I could make one for you now if it’s really urgent."
The messenger nods his head. "Yes, it is urgent. I can wait here."
Evan runs back inside. He made his way towards his room. After making sure that the messenger is still by the door and not peaking or entering the house, he closed the door to his own room.
"Status." He called his panel. "Item inventory, pen and a piece of paper."
As if from thin air, a pen and piece of paper appeared before him. Evan grabbed it from the air and began writing a reply.
Since he is in a hurry, his handwriting is messy. There are also a bunch of strike through, because he didn’t think about what to say or how to say it.
In the end, he managed to write two letters he thinks is good enough. One of them is for Spire and the other is for Sir Theobald. The daughter and her dad.
Evan folds the paper in half. Then, he took one brown envelope, placed both letters in it and he is now opening the door to his room and then the front door.
The messenger is still there. It looks like he didn’t even nice at all. He looked at Evan and the envelope he had at hand. "You don’t have a seal?"
Evan shook his head. "I’m not noble. We don’t have a seal."
The messenger nods his head. "I’ll lend you a wax seal. I don’t want my masters to think I opened a confidential letter."
When he said that, he took something from his pocket. He gave a thick looking pen for him to take.
Evan looks at it. The thicker pen is flat at the tip where the pen is. Inside is a flowing red liquid. His guess is that it is wax.
"All you have to do, is hold the envelope, put the flat end on the end and press the top like you would a pen." The messenger instructs him. "Then, you hold for a little bit until it overflows the flat end. Once it overflows, you let go of the push and pull the pen away from the envelope."
Evan nods his head. "Okay, sounds easy enough."
It was in fact, not easy. The moment he placed the stamp pen thing, it felt sticky on the paper. It didn’t seem like it was supposed to be used on brown envelopes.
Still, Evan was able to manage. He pressed it a little harder than intended and the wax inside did overflow. A bit of control and he was able to put the stamp perfectly.
The wax is red, and the stamp engrossed in it is a diamond. Why does this messenger have to enforce a wax stamp thing? Evan wonders.
"That is the wax stamp that we messengers lend those who doesn’t have any to ensure that letters are only read by the recipient." The messenger explains, as if he can hear the question in Evan’s mind. "Well, that’s all I needed from you. Whatever your reply is, you may hear from them again."
Evan waves his hand in greeting. "Thank you for sending the letter."
The messenger nods his head and began descending slowly from the high ground. When it was already back to solid ground, Evan watched as he disappeared into the air.
Only dust from where he was standing on was left.
Evan took a deep breath. "I got side tracked." He mutters to himself. "Iva, you ready to come with me in the greatest sneak I have ever done?"
Iva groans a little in his mind. ’You already think this is stupid. But I can’t stop you. Let’s just go.’
Evan chuckles and began leaving the house, unaware that there was a pair of eyes following is move.
