Chapter 60: Chapter 60: The First Day of School

Early the next morning, Moira Young and Carter Porter went to school together. Mr. and Mrs. Porter decided to drop Moira off at the dormitory first, then take Carter.

The dormitory conditions at Arden University were much better than they were over twenty years ago. Although they couldn’t compare to home, they were still quite good.

Of Moira Young’s three roommates, only one had arrived. The girl was wearing small glasses, sitting quietly in the corner, not proactively greeting Moira.

Mrs. Porter secretly handed Moira three boxes of chocolates, which Mr. Porter had brought back from abroad.

"Moira, remember to give these chocolates to your roommates, one box each. You’re too soft-hearted, don’t let yourself get bullied," Mrs. Porter whispered in her ear, so softly that only Moira could hear.

Moira stared blankly at the box of chocolates, her heart suddenly thumping intensely. Although it didn’t hurt, it left her with a vague sense of discomfort.

Julian Sinclair often bought her chocolates of this brand; she liked them a lot.

"Thank you, Auntie. Does Carter have any?" Moira asked, "He has three roommates too."

Mrs. Porter chuckled, "Silly child, they’re boys; they don’t need chocolates. If boys have conflicts, they just fight it out." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

Moira was a bit puzzled but didn’t ask further.

"Let’s go; let’s check out Carter’s dormitory." Mr. Porter looked around the dormitory, continually marveling at how much better the conditions were than twenty years ago.

Moira went with them to Carter’s dormitory. The boys’ dorm was livelier than the girls’; everyone had just moved in but was already getting along famously.

Mr. Porter knocked on the dorm door, calling, "Carter."

The door opened, and Carter’s cheerful expression froze instantly upon seeing Moira there.

Standing in the doorway, with one hand on the doorframe, he hesitated over whether to let her in.

"Carter, you should let us take a look inside!" Mrs. Porter peered inside, "I’ve never been in a boys’ dorm before. Your dad has already been to the girls’ dorm, so I should get to see a boys’ dorm too."

With an expectant look, Mrs. Porter opened Carter’s arm and walked right in.

Including Carter, there were four people in the dorm, with a bed above and desk below setup. Each person’s desk was cluttered with things, but only two people besides Carter were present, while another person was missing.

The items on that person’s desk were somewhat similar to Carter’s. Carter’s collectibles were Marvel animated heroes, whereas that person’s desk was nearly full of cool car models.

Moira’s eyes glanced over them without much thought.

"At 7:30 tonight, there’s an opening ceremony in the auditorium, and I heard there’s a raffle too," one of the other two roommates proactively started a conversation, nearly fixing their gaze on Moira.

"Arden University’s opening ceremonies are always different from other schools. The raffle has been around for years; it’s quite interesting," Mr. Porter noted the time, with more things to do later, "Alright, you guys have fun. We two adults will head out."

"Carter, remember to treat your roommates to a meal." Mrs. Porter muttered in his ear before leaving.

"Yes, yes, I know! Just hurry and go!"

Moira also left with them, as she needed to return to her dormitory to sort out her things.

When she arrived at the dorm, the other two girls had already arrived and seemed to be discussing something. As Moira walked in, they both turned their gaze to her in unison.

The atmosphere instantly felt a bit awkward.

"It’s her, it’s her, she’s that infamous swindler’s illegitimate daughter." The two who had just arrived suddenly withdrew their gaze, discussing Moira right in front of her.

Moira was stunned; she had imagined many scenarios of her roommates discussing her, but always behind her back. She hadn’t expected that just as school began, they’d talk about her directly to her face.

However, fortunately, she never cared much about this identity, and what drove her to the brink of suicide was never being Arthur Whitman’s daughter.

Moira walked to her desk, took out the three boxes of chocolates from the drawer, and first approached the quiet, non-talking girl, handing one to her with a smile.

"I hope we can all get along well in the future." Saying this, she distributed the chocolates to each person.

"Thank you, my name is Lisa Webb, you can just call me Lisa from now on." Pushing her glasses, Lisa said this and then no longer looked at Moira, bowing her head and doing her own thing.

The other two girls were different. One of them raised her head arrogantly, dismissively glancing at the chocolate in her hand before throwing it back onto Moira’s desk.

"Moira Young, you might have forgotten, but the grudge between you and me can’t be resolved with a box of chocolates."

Moira looked at the thrown-back chocolate, the corners of her mouth slightly curling up.

"Thea Thorne, I think you’ve forgotten—forgotten the incident where your face was almost ruined."

It was just by chance that they ended up in the same dorm, unable to avoid the enemy meeting on a narrow road.

"Moira Young! You’re nothing now! Julian has already abandoned you, and your father is just a street rat." Glancing at Paige Quinn beside her, Thea prompted Paige to return the chocolate to Moira’s desk.

"Here’s your chocolate back; I’m sick of eating this brand," Paige stood next to Thea, with reluctance in her eyes, but her words claimed she was tired of it.

"There’s plenty of time ahead; the suffering you’ve caused me, I’ll return to you bit by bit," Thea couldn’t contain her glee, feeling incredible seeing Moira having nothing.

Moira didn’t want to say anything more to her, so she sat at her desk, starting to unwrap the chocolates.

"Let’s go to the auditorium." Thea dragged Paige away.

Lisa glanced at Moira secretly, then quickly turned her head away.

Moira expressionlessly unwrapped the chocolates, stuffing one piece into her mouth with each unwrap. The faster she unwrapped, the quicker she stuffed them into her mouth, and even if the previous one hadn’t been finished, she’d stuff another one in without flinching.

Until her mouth was covered in chocolate syrup, and her hands dirty, she inadvertently saw her reflection in a small mirror, her eyes instantly turning red.

Just then, a napkin suddenly appeared in front of her. She looked up blankly.

Lisa looked at her with concern, handed her the napkin, and quietly returned to her seat.

Moira’s hand holding the napkin trembled slightly, and she suddenly felt that everything was really difficult.

"The opening ceremony is about to start. Do you want to go?" Lisa tidied up two books, holding them in her arms, and somewhat shyly took the initiative to ask Moira.

"Yes, let’s go together." Moira wiped her mouth and hands clean and went to the auditorium with her.

On the way.

The bustling crowd was cheerful, with all groups of four from each dorm going out together, while Moira and Lisa were quietly moving as if they didn’t exist.

When they reached the auditorium, they found that the seats were almost all taken, so they had to stand at the back.

"Those senior students are so annoying. It’s clearly our freshman opening ceremony; why are they here to stir things up?" A few girls nearby were chattering away.

"Isn’t it because of that new student representative? Reportedly, he’s extremely handsome, broke national competition records, got admitted without attending the third year of high school."

"What ’admitted without qualifications’? He must have good connections! Money talks, let alone someone with both wealth and power."

"You’re just jealous! Wait until he’s on stage; see if you can control yourself!" The girls, who had just met, were already starting to rub each other the wrong way.

Moira casually scanned around and saw Carter sitting in the front rows, with two of his roommates beside him, and one empty seat probably reserved for the other roommate.

The opening ceremony began, with speeches by the principal and various directors, which were rather dull.

She noticed that Lisa could even read a book in such a setting, so she couldn’t help but ask, "What book are you reading?"

"A book for graduate school exams." Pushing her small glasses, Lisa replied.

Moira suddenly admired her; she was only a freshman just starting and was already preparing for graduate school exams. Someone who worked this hard must be tough on themselves.

"Are you planning to go to graduate school?" Lisa asked.

"I haven’t thought about it; I probably won’t." Moira smiled. If it were before, she might have chosen to pursue graduate studies and continue to deepen her education.

But now, she couldn’t do whatever she wanted. The Porter family had paid for her freshman tuition. She just wanted to graduate and earn money early, support herself, and repay the Porter family’s kindness.
