Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Temporary Shelter

The system let out a deep sigh. "Host, have some confidence. Drop the ’apparently’."

Wu Yue: "..."

She glanced guiltily at the still-shaken half beastman. ’So he really did faint from my stench this morning.’

With the half beastman’s testimony, Wu Yue was promptly acquitted.

Qingcao walked back to the cave with her. She kept looking at Wu Yue, her expression hesitant, as if she wanted to say something. There was also a faint hint of sympathy in her eyes.

Wu Yue was confused. "Qingcao, you’ve been acting a little strange. If you have something to say, just say it."

Qingcao pursed her lips. "Yue, what are your plans now?"

The question came out of nowhere, and Wu Yue was completely baffled. "Why do you ask? Did something happen?"

Qingcao looked startled. "You don’t know? The tribe members who left to trade for salt are coming back soon. This cave belongs to a Beastman. Once they return, you won’t be able to live here anymore."

Wu Yue was dumbfounded. "..."

’What the hell? I thought this cave was mine from now on, but you’re telling me it’s just a temporary shelter?’

Seeing her stunned expression, Qingcao scratched her head. "Why don’t I go talk to Amu? You can come stay in our cave for now."

Qingcao sounded a little apprehensive as she spoke. In truth, her family’s cave was only about the same size as the one Yue was living in. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

It had only become this spacious after her older sister had found her mates and moved out. If Yue joined them, they would probably have to sleep all squeezed together again.

"Qingcao, is your family’s cave very big?"

Qingcao chuckled, pointing at the small cave behind them where Wu Yue was staying. "It’s about the same size as yours."

Wu Yue: "..."

Thinking about the number of people in Qingcao’s family, she decisively refused. "I’ll figure something else out."

Qingcao didn’t say anything else. Her family’s cave really was a bit too crowded.

"It’s not that difficult, actually," Qingcao said. "Yue, you could ask one of the males in the tribe to help you build a grass hut."

Wu Yue’s eyes lit up. "A grass hut?"

’A cave was still her first choice, but a temporary shelter would be fine too.’

Qingcao led Wu Yue to the Pure Humans’ residential area, a large settlement composed of grass huts.

Each grass hut was about the same size, reaching only to her waist, so they weren’t very large. Walking past one, Wu Yue could even see a little Pure Human child sleeping spread-eagled inside.

The two of them wound their way through the huts until they reached a more open area near the edge of the tribe. Qinghua was standing in front of a grass hut, watching them approach.

Qingcao pointed to three connected grass huts. "This is my sister’s home. She lives here with her partners."

Qinghua turned, pulled some dried grass from the hut, and spread it casually on the ground. "Have a seat."

In the few days she’d been here, Wu Yue had gradually gotten used to this uninhibited "seating arrangement."

"My sister has already told you, I assume? About the cave," Qinghua said, handing her a shriveled piece of fruit.

Wu Yue pressed her lips together. "Mhm."

She looked at Qinghua. "Why don’t you live in a cave? These grass huts are so small and low."

Given the height of the females here, even they had to stoop to get in and out, to say nothing of the males.

Qinghua froze for a moment, then gave a wry smile. "I’m not qualified to live in a cave."

Wu Yue stared, stunned. "What?"

’Qualified to live in a cave? What, do you need a license to live in a cave these days?’

Qinghua patted her arm. "The caves in the tribe are limited. Only Beastmen, Half-beastmen, the young, or those who have made great contributions to the tribe are qualified to live in them."
