Chapter 400: A Possible Cure

Kelly quickly turned to her and said, "Oh, he told me a lot about you too! Like how you’re great at cooking... he said you’re the best. And how skilled you are at makeup, even disguising people as whoever they want to look like. Clifford even won a school event because you helped him copy that famous artist, Steven!"

Sanya chuckled. "Oh, he didn’t want to join that contest, but his classmates pushed him into it. He was already a hunk by then," Sanya said with a grin.

William turned to Rain and suddenly asked, "Sis, I’ve been meaning to ask this... Brandon won’t tell me, so I’ll just ask you. I’m curious, what was the case you worked on to convince Brandon to take you on his team?"

All eyes turned to Rain.

"Right, you were only fifteen back then. You never told us the full story. You just said you volunteered and Brandon had no choice since it was an emergency," Sanya pondered aloud.

Rain gulped, feeling the weight of their stares. She hadn’t told anyone the truth before. "The case was about teenagers being kidnapped, and they needed bait, so I volunteered. They needed someone with a tracker for them to locate. They couldn’t find anyone willing, and I overheard how dire the situation was while I was still detained from the gambling den they busted... so I made a deal with Brandon."

"Oh, right. Rain was good at gambling. Even if I didn’t want to, she’d ask me to do her makeup so she’d look like a mature woman. She even faked an ID to get into those places," Sanya commented. "And the money she earned from it? Clifford managed to grow it in stocks," Sanya continued. "Looking back, who would’ve imagined that at your young age-"

"Oh, please, that’s enough," Ivan, who had been quiet until now, interrupted. "Rain is very successful now. Look where she is... this institute is hers. Although Clifford and I have shares, Rain is still the major owner. She persevered despite everything, and that’s what matters."

But Sanya’s glare at Ivan was deadly. "Doc, did you really have to cut me off like that?"

Rain and Clifford exchanged meaningful glances. Then Rain looked at William, who was now frowning. This was also why Sanya hadn’t wanted to bring William, but at the last minute, he’d managed to tag along.

Sanya and Ivan had some unspoken history... Dr. Ivan liked Sanya and pursued her even though she had straightforwardly told him she wasn’t interested.

"I cut you off because it’s not good to dwell on past events that bring bad memories. Anyway, can we start eating now?" Ivan remarked.

"Oh, right. I’m sorry... it’s my fault for asking too many questions. I was just excited and overwhelmed. Let’s pray first," Kelly said with an apologetic smile. She led the prayer, and they began eating dinner, which ended with everyone chatting animatedly.

As soon as dinner ended, William stood up and said, "Sanya and I will head off to bed first. The journey was tiring." They excused themselves, and Alexander turned to Rain.

"Do you want to rest early?" he asked.

"Oh no, I’ll stay for a while to discuss something important with Ivan. You go ahead first, and I’ll follow shortly," she said with a smile.

With that, Alexander nodded, and a helper guided him to their room.

Now, only Rain, William, Ivan, and Kelly remained.

"You should head back first too. I’ll check on you later," Clifford told Kelly. She nodded and quickly left, leaving the three of them alone.

Clifford turned to Ivan with a raised brow and asked, "Are you still sulking? It’s not like Sanya ever gave you even a 0.1% chance."

Rain shook her head but then Ivan deserved the scolding.

"I’m not sulking, alright? I’ve already moved on," Ivan defended himself. "She likes handsome man! Not a genius!"

Rain pursed her lips, trying hard not to laugh at Ivan’s expression. He looked so disappointed.

"Ah, please, don’t let the two of you make a scene tomorrow. You know Sanya is a bit insensitive and always acts on impulse. Cutting her off like that is disrespectful and not nice," Clifford scolded.

Ivan didn’t retort and just released a frustrated sigh.

Rain stayed quiet, waiting for an opportunity to speak. Ivan could be emotional at times, but he was a good person at heart.

"Alright I’ll behave well..." Ivan said with a shrug.

"Can we talk about the progress now?" Rain interrupted.

"Of course. Come on, let’s head to my laboratory. I’ll explain everything there," Ivan said.

They stood and walked to his private lab, where Ivan began explaining his recent progress.

"So, you’re saying you’ve developed a possible cure?!" Rain burst out, her eyes wide with shock.

"I did, but I’ve only tested it on lab rats. I..." Ivan hesitated, glancing at Clifford.

"What is it?" Rain urged.

"I’m hesitant to give it to Kelly because Clifford said he’d kill me if anything happened to her. But how will I know if it’s effective on humans? I don’t know how people will react, so I need another patient willing to be a test subject."

Clifford turned to Rain and firmly stated, "I’m sorry, Rain, but I can’t. I won’t risk Kelly’s health any further as a test subject."

Rain frowned and sternly asked, "Is Kelly aware that you’ve been bypassing tests? That you’re breaching the contract on her behalf?"

Clifford shook his head.

Rain took a deep breath and said, "I understand where you’re coming from, Clifford. But you need to tell this to Kelly."

Then, turning to Ivan, she said, "I’ll look for another test subject with the same condition."

Rain walked toward her room with slumped shoulders and a heavy heart, disheartened by how close they were to curing her father-in-law. Yet, she couldn’t blame her friend Clifford. If she were in his shoes, she knew she would have done the same.
