Chapter 393: His Promise

William stirred as the ringing of his mobile phone pulled him from sleep. Still groggy, he lazily reached for the device.

"Hello?" he answered, stifling a yawn. It was just Larry, so he didn’t bother with formalities.

"The signal from the number traces back to Clayton University Hospital," Larry began. "Most of the calls were made abroad, to Lamey Country, to be exact. Recently, though, there were four calls made to another burner number here in our country."

"Hah, that’s definitely Tim Clayton," William said with a smirk. "Michael is clearly running a secret investigation on him. Now I’m curious, who is Tim contacting with those burner phones? That’s what we need to find out, Larry. Make this your top priority. I want to know exactly what dealings Tim has that requires such secrecy!"

He gave Larry further instructions before ending the call. Glancing at the wall clock, he shrugged. It was almost eight in the morning, and his stomach was growling.

As expected, his thoughtful wife hadn’t woken him up and had let him sleep in. He glanced at the door, smirking as he began counting under his breath. "Ten, nine, eight..."

On cue, the door opened, and Sanya walked in with a wide smile.

"I knew you’d wake up a bit late again," she teased, carrying a breakfast tray. "Here, eat."

William grinned as she placed the tray on the bed. He let her feed him, feeling almost like a pampered baby. But he wasn’t complaining, he loved how much she cared for him. Despite the mental exhaustion from work, Sanya was his safe haven, his place to rest and recharge.

While eating, he told her about Larry’s report.

"Did you tell Rain about it yet?" she asked.

"I’ll fill her in later," he replied. "I’m waiting for another report today about the place she asked me to investigate. Honestly, this is Michael’s investigation, but thanks to that dead man, we have a lead. Apparently, Michael was the one who provided Tim with those burner phones. I’m confident we’ll get to the bottom of this and maybe, just maybe, this investigation will help us uncover the truth about Rain’s real parents."

Sanya nodded, smiling as she held up another spoonful of rice and omelette for him. After William finished eating, Sanya picked up the tray and said, "Get ready now, and I’ll wait for you downstairs. I’m planning to buy gifts for Clifford and his future bride."

He nodded, watching her leave before stretching and getting out of bed. Completely bare, he smirked when he caught her turning back, her eyes widening.

"William!" Sanya exclaimed, her cheeks turning a deep shade of red as she noticed the state he was in.

He gave her a mischievous grin and, with a playful tilt of his head and puppy-dog eyes, asked, "Will you extend the pampering, my dear wife, and help me take a bath?"

Sanya shrugged, prompting William to pout as he added, "Please?" They’d already had a few rounds last night and at dawn, but somehow, he still couldn’t get enough of her.

"But I’m already dressed," Sanya protested.

William grinned mischievously and quickly approached her. "That’s an easy fix," he said, reaching for her blouse. "I’ll take it off." Just as his hands were about to undo her buttons, his phone rang loudly, breaking the moment.

"Answer it first," Sanya said, raising an eyebrow. "It could be something important."

Scratching his head in frustration, William grabbed his phone, cursing whoever had interrupted what was shaping up to be another session with his beloved wife.

"What is it, Brandon?" he asked, annoyance evident in his tone.

"You sound irritated," Brandon quipped on the other end.

"I’m not," William replied, forcing a lighter tone. "What’s going on?"

"The capital prison is on fire. It should be hitting the news in a few minutes," Brandon informed him.

"What?!" William exclaimed, horrified. His mind immediately went to Dina Clayton, knowing that was where she was imprisoned.

"Do you have any updates on Dina?" he asked urgently.

"None yet. The firefighters are still trying to contain the blaze. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything," Brandon said.

"Please do. I’m going to call Rain about this," William replied before quickly ending the call.

Sanya stood silently, unsure how to react as she stared at her husband. He was still very much naked, conducting a serious conversation without a hint of modesty. She could tell it was important, so she didn’t interrupt, but based on what she overheard, she had a sense of the dire situation.

As soon as the call ended, Sanya began removing her clothes and said, "Come on, I’ll bathe you in the tub. And you can tell me what happened."

Without waiting for a response, she gently pulled her husband toward the bathroom. She could see the tension in his face after the disturbing news and wanted to help ease it.

The bathtub was already prepared, as she’d anticipated the time he’d wake up. She guided him into the warm water and began lathering his body with soap, her hands moving gently but purposefully.

"Do you think this is just a coincidence?" she asked curiously, breaking the silence.

"I’m not sure," William admitted, leaning back as she continued her soothing task. "It could be a coincidence, but it might not be. I’ll closely monitor the investigation and check on Dina. I can’t shake this bad feeling."

His eyes met hers, serious and unwavering. "Anything connected to people like the Claytons is rarely a coincidence. And Carla? I don’t trust her either. There’s always something beneath the surface."

Sanya sighed, her expression conflicted. "I just hope my friend can finally live in peace, with a happy and healthy marriage. She deserves it. I’m glad she found someone, and I’m grateful for you and our family. But somehow... it feels like trouble keeps following us both."

William pulled her closer, his strong arms encircling her. His voice softened as he murmured against her lips, "You don’t have to worry. I’ll protect you with my life. No matter what trouble comes our way, I’ll be your shield and defender."

Before she could respond, he leaned in and captured her lips in a deep, reassuring kiss, sealing his promise in the most intimate way possible.
