Surprise Marriage to a Billionaire-Chapter 380: A Surprise Visit
Chapter 380: A Surprise Visit
"You shouldn’t visit me so often like this, Sanya," Crissa said worriedly, her tone filled with apprehension.
Sanya ignored her mother’s concerns and focused on arranging the lunchboxes she had brought. "I cooked all your favorites," she said with a warm smile. "I put the other dishes in the fridge. You can ask the private nurse to reheat them for you later."
Crissa’s expression remained tense. "Sanya, this is dangerous. If he finds out-"
"Stop worrying, Mom," Sanya interrupted gently, her smile unwavering. It felt incredible to finally have someone she could call "Mom" without hesitation. "Your son-in-law is a capable man, and he knows all about that man."
Sanya gave her mother a reassuring smile as she continued, "I have bodyguards nearby, keeping an eye on everything. Plus, this hospital is under strict protection. He won’t be able to trace you here. The last hospital your late husband brought you to is his dead-end. He won’t find anything about you after that."
Crissa’s worry didn’t fade, but she seemed to relax a little.
"Oh, right," Sanya suddenly said, her voice trailing off as if she had just remembered something important.
"Once you’re discharged, you’ll be staying in one of the apartments my husband owns," Sanya said with a reassuring smile. "Everything you’ll need is there. The building is connected to a mall, so you’ll have easy access to anything you might want. William and I will visit you from time to time, and you can even spend some vacations with us at the Lancaster Mansion."
Sanya’s tone was casual, but her intentions were deeply thoughtful. In truth, her father-in-law, Rock, had suggested bringing Crissa directly to the Lancaster Mansion. There was plenty of space, and he thought it would be easier to have her close to the family. However, Sanya gently declined. She knew her mother might feel overwhelmed by the grandeur and the sudden change.
Her mother needed her peace, a chance to adjust slowly and at her own pace, before meeting the entire Lancaster family.
"This is too much already, Sanya," Crissa murmured, her voice breaking. Tears welled up in her eyes as she began to sob quietly. "I don’t deserve this... I’m not a good mother, and you have no obligation to me. I don’t want to become a burden to you."
Sanya stared at her mother with a helpless shrug, her eyes soft with understanding. Gently, she reached out and took her mother’s hands in hers, giving them a comforting squeeze.
"There’s still time for us, Mom," she said softly, her voice filled with hope. "Time for me to be a good daughter to you and time for you to be the mother you always wanted to be. So many years have been lost already, but now... now we have this chance. A gift from the heavens to be together again, to rebuild what we’ve missed."
Seeing the tears streaming down her mother’s face, Sanya quickly grabbed a tissue and gently wiped it away. "Stop crying already," she said with a small smile. "My eyes are red and swollen enough as it is. Later, my husband will start worrying again if he sees me like this."
This time, her mother squeezed her hands softly, bringing them to her cheek and brushing against them with tenderness. Her voice trembled as she whispered, "I’m so glad you’re not suffering. Seeing how your life has turned out... it makes me think, maybe it was worth it. Maybe I made the right decision by letting you go, even though it hurt so much."
Sanya’s heart clenched, but she managed a reassuring smile. "Maybe... but it still would have been nice to grow up knowing you," she said, her tone soft. "Still, let’s not dwell on the past. What matters now is the present and the future."
Her smile grew wider as she continued, "I can’t wait for you to meet my friends. But for now, come and eat. We need to get you back to full health as quickly as we can."
After spending a few more hours with her mother, Sanya decided it was time to leave. She had plans to drop by her husband’s office at GIS, the national security agency, curious about how he worked in such a high-stakes environment. William had once joked that his job was just like what she saw in movies, complete with spies and covert operations.
While it sounded thrilling, Sanya couldn’t deny the worry that lingered in the back of her mind. She much preferred the idea of William staying safely within the family business, like his brother Alexander.
Sliding into the car, she turned to her bodyguard and driver. "Take me to the GIS office. I want to surprise my husband," she instructed with a smile.
The driver hesitated, glancing at her in the rearview mirror. "Madam, GIS security is very strict. We won’t be able to enter the facility unless we’re granted access. We should inform Sir William beforehand."
Sanya frowned, her lips forming a small pout. "But it’s supposed to be a surprise..." she muttered, tapping her chin. Then, a thought struck her, and her expression brightened.
"Wait! I know someone who works there!" she exclaimed, pulling out her phone. Without wasting another moment, she dialed Brandon’s number, explaining her intention to visit and requesting his help to make the surprise happen.
It was already past four when Sanya arrived at the GIS office. In the basement parking lot, Brandon was waiting for her, leaning against a column with an exasperated look.
"Seriously, Sanya, I’m already busy as it is," Brandon grumbled the moment she stepped out of the car.
Sanya chuckled, unfazed by his complaint. "Oh, come on. Don’t worry, I don’t plan on surprising my husband like this all the time. Now, be a good friend and escort me directly to his office, please."
Brandon sighed, shaking his head as he walked toward the elevator. "You’re lucky I have access to the high-ranking officers’ floor. What would you have done if I didn’t?"
Sanya grinned, falling in step beside him. "Well, I guess it wouldn’t be much of a surprise visit then, would it?"
She handed Brandon a paper bag and jested, "Here, I brought some bribe."
Brandon accepted it with a chuckle.
"I heard you already have a girlfriend. Will you bring her to the mansion next time? Come and visit me there once in a while and bring your girlfriend. It’s so unfair that you only introduced her to Rain," she said with a pout.
"Ah, but you’ll just tease me nonstop in front of her," Brandon pointed out.
Sanya chuckled, knowing she was guilty as charged. She loved teasing Brandon and Clifford. "Well, you can’t blame me. I really thought you and Clifford would end up like old maids... What do you call men who haven’t had any girlfriends in their life again?"
"See?" Brandon scoffed, and Sanya laughed.
As they reached the elevator, Brandon placed his palm on the biometric scanner, and the doors slid open. Once inside, the subtle hum of the elevator filled the silence.
Sanya broke it with a casual reminder. "Oh, by the way, don’t forget Clifford’s wedding this Sunday."
Brandon raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smirk on his face. "You’re already hijacking my workday, and now you’re piling on social obligations?"
"Of course," Sanya said with a playful shrug. "You’ll thank me when you’re having fun at the wedding. Besides, Clifford would kill me if I didn’t remind you."
Brandon rolled his eyes but couldn’t help the small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Noted."
"So, are you going to bring this Vannia to Clifford’s wedding?" Sanya pressed, her curiosity as persistent as ever.
"Yes, I will. So make sure you behave," Brandon replied with a shrug.
"Now, let’s get this over with before someone questions why I’m babysitting a VIP guest."
They headed straight to William’s office, walking briskly through the quiet corridors.
"My father-in-law was the director, right? And he had his own office?" she asked curiously.
"Yes, indeed he was. But he rarely came, and I heard Deputy Director Arlan Cartier will soon take that position," Brandon commented.
Sanya’s face crumpled as she mumbled, "But I don’t like his daughter, Carla. That woman can’t be trusted. You all should investigate her if there’s any leak of information regarding cases involving Rain and Alexander."
"Don’t worry about that, Sanya. Your husband is a meticulous one, so he’s already doing a great job," Brandon replied, and she no longer commented.
"His secretary isn’t here," Brandon murmured next, noticing the empty desk outside the office door as they approached.
Sanya’s gaze shifted to the slightly ajar door of William’s office. Brandon, ever cautious, stepped ahead and raised his hand to knock.
But before his knuckles met the wood, both he and Sanya froze at the sound of William’s voice drifting from inside.
"That’s it. Ahh, that feels much better. You’re doing great. Ahh!"
Sanya’s eyes widened, and she exchanged a surprised look with Brandon. His expression mirrored hers, half confusion, half incredulity.
"What on earth..." Brandon whispered, his hand dropping to his side.
Sanya tilted her head, lips parting in disbelief, but then her expression shifted. She narrowed her eyes and stepped forward without hesitation.
"Wait, Sanya, you might want to-" Brandon tried to stop her, but she was already pushing the door open.
