Chapter 348: Run Away

Alexander nervously gulped, his mind racing. Did she already find out about the mess Carla had caused? Rain looked so sad and disheartened that he found himself at a loss for words, unsure how to approach her.

"I’m sorry about what happened today," he finally muttered, his voice low. "I’ll make sure to contain and clean it all up. I understand if you’re mad... I’ll sleep in the other room tonight."

He turned to leave, but her sudden question made him pause.

"What are you talking about?" she asked.

Alexander stopped and turned back to her, studying her expression. She motioned for him to sit beside her. "Come here. What do you mean?"

He hesitated before sitting on the edge of the bed. "You seemed upset. I thought it was because of the incident with Carla," he explained. "The contract we had before got leaked, and now the employees are gossiping about it. I was planning to tell you."

Rain’s eyebrows raised slightly in surprise. "Oh. I didn’t know about that yet, but I’m glad you told me. So, what’s your plan to handle it?" she asked, curiosity flickering in her eyes.

Alexander hesitated before answering her question, his gaze locked on hers. "Wait," he said softly, tilting his head. "If it’s not about Carla, then why did you look so upset earlier? You looked like something heavy was on your mind."

Rain sighed deeply, her eyes dropping to her hands. He could sense her hesitation, the internal struggle playing out in her mind.

"What is it?" Alexander pressed, his tone firmer but still gentle. "You promised to tell me everything when I asked. So tell me, what’s bothering you right now?"

He leaned in slightly, his concern etched into his features. Whatever it was, he wanted to know. He needed to know.

Rain bit her lower lip, recognizing that look on Alexander’s face. Oh God... does he have to feel the same pain twice, knowing his father is sick? she thought, trying to contain her emotions. He might appear fine now, but he was still recovering, and Dr. Lambert had warned against giving Alexander any emotional stress.

"It’s about my real identity," she said, deciding to use it as an excuse rather than telling him about his father’s brain tumor. She hadn’t shared this part of her past yet, as their focus had been on their relationship rather than her personal history.

Alexander’s brows furrowed, and she saw the flicker of surprise in his eyes.

"After that incident, William insisted that Tim Clayton and I do a DNA compatibility test. None of them could understand how a father could treat me so unfairly since I was a child... and that’s when we found out he’s not my real father," she began, her voice steady but her heart pounding.

She hesitated as Alexander’s face darkened, his jaw tightening. But he stayed silent, allowing her to continue. Rain explained everything: how Kayla Perez wasn’t her biological mother either, and how William and Brandon had launched a discreet investigation into the matter.

"That man, Tim Clayton, will pay for everything he’s done," Alexander said, his voice a low growl. "He should already be rotting in prison for colluding with Michael Astor!"

"But we don’t have enough evidence yet to put him behind bars," Rain pointed out gently. "The plan was executed so perfectly at Clayton Hospital University that he can easily wash his hands clean, even if we file a case against him."

She explained further, her tone laced with frustration. There was no proof she was swapped at birth in the hospital. The CCTV footage from that time showed her face covered, and she wasn’t the only patient released from the operating room that day.

"Tim’s lawyers could argue the switch happened after the operation without Tim’s knowledge," she added. "And they might be right. The hospital’s security footage from key areas was conveniently out of order, supposedly under repair. That’s why Clifford had such a hard time piecing everything together. If it wasn’t for him breaking into the Cosmos security system Michael used as his network, we might never have found out anything at all."

"Don’t worry, Rain. We’ll get that man soon enough," Alexander vowed, his jaw clenched tightly.

Rain smiled at his determination, touched by how much he cared. She gently cupped his face, her thumbs brushing his cheeks. "Relax. Don’t get too worked up about it," she murmured soothingly. "Now, how about you tell me how you’re planning to deal with your childhood sweetheart?"

"She’s not my childhood sweetheart," Alexander retorted firmly, his face twisting into a grimace.

Rain couldn’t help but smirk as she released his face. "Your ex-girlfriend, then," she teased, her tone playful.

But instead of responding with words, Alexander leaned in suddenly, catching her completely off guard. He pressed his lips against hers in a fierce, rogue kiss, leaving no room for argument.

Rain had missed this, the closeness and passion, and her arms instinctively wrapped around Alexander’s neck. Soft moans escaped her lips as his kiss deepened, and she responded with equal fervor and hunger.

They were both breathless when Alexander finally pulled back, his lips releasing hers, only to trail kisses along her jawline.

"Rain... I think I’m going crazy," he murmured, his voice rough with emotion. He pressed warm, lingering kisses against her neck, licking and suckling gently. "I can’t get you out of my mind. Being near you, yet holding myself back, feels like torture."

Rain smiled softly, her hands threading through his hair as she tilted her head to give him better access. "I told you not to hold yourself back," she whispered, her voice teasing yet sincere. "Do what you want with me, Alexander. You have every right... and my full consent."

Alexander suddenly froze, his breaths uneven as he pressed his forehead against her shoulder. For a moment, it seemed like he was battling some internal struggle.

"Go to sleep first," he murmured, his voice low and strained. "I’ll join you shortly. I just remembered there’s something I need to take care of."

Before Rain could respond, he quickly pulled away and left the room, the door clicking shut behind him.

Rain blinked rapidly, staring at the closed door in stunned silence. Slowly, her frown deepened as confusion took over. "What just happened?" she muttered to herself, her voice tinged with disbelief. "Did he just... run away from me?"
