Surgery Godfather-Chapter 314 - 0298: A Bystander
Chapter 314: Chapter 0298: A Bystander
Everyone is waiting for Boss Cheng to come and eat together.
Little Su, Tang Fei, Zhou Can, Qi Yanan, the four girls, are led by Director Zhu to another presidential suite to rest.
Fatty, Little Five, and Zhang Lin head to the bathroom to wash their faces. Doctors mostly have some kind of germophobia and no matter how high-end the hotel is, they dare not use its towels. They always bring their own towels when they travel.
There’s a knock on the door. Director Zhu peeks through the peephole before opening it.
Boss Cheng is standing at the door, travel-weary, holding a black leather bag in his hand.
“Old Zhu?”
...
Boss Cheng paused before realizing it’s his old colleague Zhu from the Department of General Surgery. Why is he here? He heard that Anning Insurance was the one who invited Yang Ping to Malaysia. Could Old Zhu be the one in charge of it?
“Old Cheng?” Director Zhu was also surprised.
The world is too small, running into old colleagues in a foreign land makes the encounter all the more exciting.
Back when Director Zhu was forced to resign, Cheng Liquan blamed the hospital’s leadership for their lack of backbone, and caused a stir in the dean’s office, accusing him of being weak and eventually throwing a bottled water at him. After the incident, he quit saying, “I am done.”
This led to Cheng creating his own hospital. At the time, he and Director Zhu knew each other but were merely colleagues, they did not have a deep personal relationship. Cheng was just one of the many angry doctors then.
Cheng Liquan, standing at the door, feels both surprise and assurance.
Once, when he went to the UAE, as he was resting at the Dubai Transit lounge, he heard someone speaking Chinese. When he instinctively turned back, it turned out to be his old college roommate.
The guy was hugging a woman, who was also a college mate. Cheng knew, they were college sweethearts who later separated, each had their own families now. A recent gathering revealed they are back together now, Cheng never gave credence to it, but witnessing them now makes it all too real.
The situation was a bit awkward, for a while, no one knows what to say. Cheng quickly averted his eyes, pretending not to have seen anything. The world really is small, hence, it’s best not to do wrong things because one might just run into old acquaintances even in Dubai.
“Do you know each other?” Yang Ping comes out to greet Old Cheng as he perceives their expressions.
Come to think of it, it’s not surprising that they know each other, given that they both came from the Provincial People’s Hospital.
“More than that, we’re old friends.” Director Zhu quickly welcomes Old Cheng into the room.
“How did you get here? Old Cheng, I thought you were just joking?” Yang Ping has him sit down.
Old Cheng did not decline, he sat down trying to be comfortable. He takes the tea from Director Zhu and moistens his throat: “I heard you were coming to Malaysia for a consultation. I am familiar with the place, so I thought I’d come and be your guide. I have been trying to call you yesterday to no avail, so I bought a ticket and decided to talk when I get here. I landed in Kuala Lumpur last night, on the Malaysia Airlines flight.”
“Old Cheng, it really takes a boss to be so adventurous!” Little Five gives him a thumbs up.
“We were in Yingge Hospital’s consultation meeting yesterday, we were there the whole day, no time to mind the phones.” Director Zhu explains on behalf of Yang Ping.
True enough, Yang Ping did not notice the missed calls. He just looked at Little Su’s WeChat messages.
“How many days are you going to be in Malaysia? How is your schedule? I’d like to invite everyone to lunch.” Old Cheng extends an invite, generously.
“Lunch is already arranged.” Director Zhu looks troubled.
“Dinner?”
“Dinner won’t work either, Yingge hospital has something planned.” Director Zhu shakes his head.
“Tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow morning we have surgery and the rest of the day is really tight.” Director Zhu is straight Stforward.
“Did you came all the way to Malaysia just to take us to lunch?” Yang Ping joked.
Old Cheng won’t be deterred: “Anyway, you should spare some time for me as well. It doesn’t matter when, I tell you, Malaysia and Singapore are like my second homes. I am very familiar with the place. I have several relatives here. Even the cousin who just dropped me off at the hotel.”
“You have a compulsive disorder to pay. It doesn’t always have to be you who should treat, we can treat you just the same.” Director Zhu knows Old Cheng has not changed at all, he is still generous!
“Well then, if you need me to run errands, just tell me. It’s not easy to come to Malaysia. How about this, you can concentrate on the surgery, and I’ll help you buy some local specialties to take back.” Old Cheng always feels more comfortable when he can help.
“How can we let you do all the running?” Yang Ping knew what he meant.
“Buddy, any formalities between us are unnecessary. It’s settled then. I’m actually planning to visit some high-end hospitals here. Since Yingge Hospital is also a high-end private hospital, can I join you in your visit?” Old Cheng plans to visit Singapore’s Elizabeth Norvina Hospital after the new year.
Elizabeth Norvina Hospital and Yingge Hospital are both high-end private hospitals owned by Baihui Medical Group.
Yang Ping felt there should be no issue in just saying hello to Dr. Huang, as it wasn’t like he was going up on stage for surgery.
“I’ll apply to Yingge Hospital to arrange for you to visit in an observational capacity. There should be no problem,” said Director Zhu, believing he would be the best person to take this up.
Everyone set out to enjoy a delectable, abundant Malaysian buffet lunch at the hotel, eating to their heart’s content.
After lunch, under the guidance of Dr. Huang, everyone familiarized themselves with the hospital’s equipment and surgical instruments.
The anesthesia machine was the latest generation of the Zeus from the German company Dräger, the most advanced anesthesia machine available in the world.
Yingge Hospital didn’t use their medical equipment until it was worn down. They replaced old devices with new models once they were available on the market, keeping their primary equipment at the frontier of technology.
Yingge Hospital assigned an anesthesiologist to assist Liang Fatty. Liang Fatty, bolstered by Yang Ping’s impressive performance at the consultation meeting where he solved a complex medical problem, was filled with renewed confidence, feeling like he himself had evolved into an international expert.
Sanbo Hospital also had a few Zeus anaesthesia machines, but they weren’t the newest generation. The differences were minor, mostly in the details of operation, and Liang Fatty endeavored to grasp every nuance of the new anaesthesia machine.
Xiao Su and Zhou Can, guided by their designated assistants, inspected the surgical instruments, with Xiao Su scrutinizing each tool, particularly the microscopic instruments.
Yingge Hospital’s management of surgical instruments was meticulous. Specialists would daily examine them and repair or replace any that didn’t meet their standards, avoiding embarrassing incidents during surgery.
Dr. Huang reported D-dimer monitoring results to Yang Ping regularly, and they remained stable within normal levels. Yang Ping decided to let everyone rest for the night, recuperate, and begin the surgery the next day.
After familiarizing themselves with the equipment, Yang Ping led everyone to the hospital-provided conference room to study the case. August, Milton, and Kobayashi Takeshi all requested to participate.
Once they started to discuss the case, everyone immediately dove in. Only Zhang Lin seemed restless, trying several times to snap pictures with his phone and post them on his moment, but not daring to do so. Despite his usually stubborn attitude, he was like school kid in front of a teacher.
Now they began to test the Google VR glasses. Yang Ping and Song Zimo put on their glasses, with Yang Ping using the opportunity to go over the diagnosis and surgical plan for this case with Song Zimo.
Thanks to the groundwork laid by Fang Xiaoyun’s case, Song Zimo’s talent allowed him to quickly grasp the essence of this case. The difference between a genius and an average person is like the difference between operating systems: geniuses operate on the latest Mac system, while your average person may function on the original Windows system, and those slightly less sharp run on DOS.
Zhang Lin and Little Five’s responsibilities in this surgery are the same as always, which is to handle exposure – colloquially, they “hook.” They enjoy this role enormously. Numerous renowned professors have started their careers “hooking.” For example, Zou Yingsheng, the head of Spinal Surgery department at Nandu Affiliated Hospital One, now nationally famous and the director of one of the three major scoliosis centers nationwide.
And who would know that he started as Professor Su’s dedicated “hooker” and evolved into the great figure in spinal surgery that he is today? Who knows, someday Directors Zhang and Lu might also be nationally known.

With their glasses on, they started trying to figure out what was meant by “circles within circles” or “third circle”. Song Zimo spared no energy and effort, even referencing the story of the chained stratagems from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, expanding on it in the airport lounge, on the plane, and in the car that came to pick them up.
Thanks to Song Zimo’s groundwork, Yang Ping found it much easier to explain things to the others now.
Boss Cheng got his visitor’s pass and sat next to the two foreigners. No matter what, Yingge Hospital had to give face to Yang Ping; if a friend of Yang Ping wanted to visit the hospital, once or twice, eight or ten times even, they wouldn’t mind.
The more you associate with people, the more the road broadens – more and more people can help you and more and more people can give you face. Cheng’s road was definitely broadening.
“Hello, may I ask who is Dr. Yang’s assistant?” August pointed at Song Zimo and asked Old Cheng clandestinely.
Old Cheng nodded and wondered why the golden-haired, blue-eyed German was asking about this. Perhaps he had a daughter at home waiting to get married and he was looking for a Chinese son-in-law.
“Excuse me for the interruption. How about you? Are you also in Dr. Yang’s team?” August was indomitable.
Old Cheng responded casually, “I’m just here to buy some soy sauce.”
“Buy some soy sauce?” August shook his head, finding Chinese ways of speaking English puzzling.
“Buy some soy sauce” was easy to understand literally, but he was sure that wasn’t what it meant. Chinese often spoke metaphorically. Milton, whose language aptitude wasn’t half bad, figured out what Old Cheng meant: “You’re a cook, right? Dr. Yang’s cook?”
Old Cheng’s English might not be very good, but he was a former associate professor, travelled often, and could manage daily conversation just fine.
” ‘Buy some soy sauce’ can mean ‘cook’? What an inspired translation!”
It seems English, like Chinese, also conveys feeling. Old Cheng can’t be bothered to explain.
If it meant being a cook, so be it. As long as they were happy. But among the people here who looked like they might serve as Dr. Yang’s cook, he didn’t think it would be him.
The status of Chinese doctors is so high? When they travel to perform surgeries, they bring their own cooks who can also speak English. Really a high-quality team.
“Listen attentively. They’re discussing the case. The case is a dural arteriovenous fistula, a rare case among rare cases,” Old Cheng said coolly, putting on the VR glasses seated on the table.
“The cook is familiar with medical knowledge?” August and Milton locked eyes and simultaneously thought—truly a high-quality team!
Such an excellent team. The surgery set to take place tomorrow should indeed be noteworthy!
