Chapter 44: Paul’s Manipulation

The food was the most delicious food Eric and Riya ever had in their lives. They might have had similar or maybe better when they were young and Riya’s father was alive, but since they didn’t remember, it was the first time.

While eating, Eric had glanced at Elena and had noticed that despite the tension Paul’s presence caused, her expression had become better as she ate.

Paul didn’t say anything while they ate and only glanced at Elena and Riya a few times.

After they were done, Elena glanced at Paul and Vivian, who was standing behind him with her head down, and said, "Thank you for the food. It was very delicious, Vivian."

Eric and Riya followed suit and thanked them.

Vivian smiled at them, but the trio could see her smile was forced, which made them frown.

Noticing this, Paul glanced back at her and narrowed his eyes at her, which made her duck her head down in fear.

Eric’s expression fell when he saw this. Not only because he knew Paul was going to take action sooner than he expected him to, but also because of the way he was treating her, or had treated her for the years that made her this scared of him.

Paul turned his head around, placed his elbows on the table, crossed his fingers, and put his chin on them as he swept his gaze across the trio before stopping on Elena.

"Elena, let me be direct." He said, making the trio straighten their spines, their expressions heavy.

"Neither you nor the boy told me the truth. I know that guy causing trouble works for a minor noble family and seems to have already convinced two level one novice warriors to deal with your family."

Eric’s expression became dark while Elena’s and Riya’s faces turned white in fright.

Ignoring their reactions, Paul continued, in a deeper voice, "If you are on your own, even if you somehow survive him, you won’t survive the Kroft family."

Boom!

It was as if an explosion went off in Eric’s mind when he heard this, and his already dark expression darkened even more.

He was about to slap the table and stand up, but just as he gritted his teeth and raised his hand, chills ran down his spine. He felt as if he did that, he would die.

Raising his head, he saw Paul staring at him with a dangerous look in his narrowed eyes and a provocative sneer on his face.

"You..."

His eyes reddened in anger, and he began to say when Elena glanced at him, her lips trembling and a despairing look in her eyes. "Eric... that noble young master who... took you away. He was from the Kroft family?"

Riya was confused when she heard Paul mention the Kroft family, but when she heard Elena, her confusion cleared and dread filled her heart.

Even though she didn’t go out of the house much and only met Elsa, Liam, and a few more of her friends, she had heard the stories about these noble young masters and how cynical, cruel, and vengeful they were.

If Eric’s story about how the young master who took him away let him go after beating him was false, which she and Elena were sure it was, then Eric—and since they were his family, they also were in danger—because when that young master found out he was still alive, he would most likely return for him.

’We shouldn’t have come to the middle city.’ Both Elena and Riya regretted coming to the middle city. If the noble young master in question was from some other noble family, the chances were very low that he would encounter Eric again, but if he was from the Kroft family, he would soon find out about his existence in the middle city, if he hadn’t found out about it already.

"Mom..." Eric had just opened his mouth when Paul said, "Not only was he from the Kroft Family, but he was their young lord, Andrew."

Paul smiled through his eyes as he looked at Elena, who had started trembling now and added, "I’m sure you have heard the rumors about him. They are all true. I know that because I work for the Kroft family and have met him and seen him do all those sordid deeds several times."

Eric’s eyes turned red, and he finally couldn’t hold himself back and shouted, "Shut up!"

Paul’s eyes narrowed dangerously, but he didn’t do anything and just smirked at him. His expression was one of someone who had won.

Eric gritted his teeth and turned to Elena, "Mom, don’t listen to him. He is just saying all that so you would agree to his demands."

Elena looked at him with tears in her eyes. "T-Then tell me he wasn’t Andrew."

Eric didn’t hesitate to shake his head and say, No. He was not."

However, just as he said this, his heart fell because the look in Elena’s eyes told him she knew he was lying, and then to his horror, she turned to look at Paul and said, "Can you keep us safe?"

Paul smiled in satisfaction and nodded, "Of course. I can. That guy Luke wouldn’t dare to come find you here, and as for young master Andrew, I will bribe those guards who have seen him enter the middle city. So, he will not find out about him, and therefore, he wouldn’t come for him."

Because of his crush on Elena, he always kept tabs on her, wanting to find something that would make her his. When he found out Andrew had taken Eric to the Demon Mountain Range and had him beaten before throwing him into the abyss, he was happy because with him gone, the chances of Elena’s and Riya’s survival would be lower as they, two helpless ladies, would become everyone’s target.

He became happier when Elena lost her lost... though he might have somehow contributed to it.

But then to his utter shock, he heard Eric had come back.

How could someone thrown into the abyss return?

He was tempted to make a move, capture him, and find out how he made the impossible possible, but then Eric left the city with the disciples of the Skybreak Martial Academy.

He had gotten the news about his return just a few hours ago. He had decided to take action tomorrow, but to his pleasant surprise, they had already come to him.

Now, not only would he get Elena and her young daughter, but he could also easily find out the reason why Eric was able to return from the demonic abyss.

He then watched as Elena looked at him and parted her soft lips, "I will..."

However, just as she had started speaking...

Buzz!

A buzzing sound filled the room.

Paul frowned in dissatisfaction and looked at the source of it, the small circular disk on the table.

It was a communication device that every Kroft family warrior had and was ordered to keep with them at all times so they wouldn’t miss any order.

Picking it up, he clicked it and put it near his ear. Then, as he heard the message, his expression twisted into a frustrated scowl.

A moment later, he stood up and looked at Elena.

"I’m being summoned by the Kroft family. By the time I return, if you are still here, I’ll understand you agree." Saying this, he walked out of the dining room, and a few moments later, he left the house after changing his clothes.

The dining room was silent even after he left the house.

A short while later, Vivian looked at Elena and sighed, "I’m sorry, Elena. But I’m helpless to do anything."

Then after hesitating for a moment, she added, "Think about it for a few days and decide what’s the best for your family."

Saying this, she started picking up the dirty dishes when Eric’s eyes lit up and he jumped to his feet as he asked, "You mean he won’t return for a few days?"

His sudden question and the excitement and relief in his tone startled Vivian. Then she nodded, "Yes. He told me someone from the Kroft family is taking him and several other Novice Warriors to the demon mountain range for a few days, but he should be back within a week."

Eric sighed in relief when he heard this before turning to Elena, "You don’t need to sacrifice yourselves now. I’ll take care of everything."

Saying this, he walked out of the dining hall and went to his room, leaving the confused Vivian and a sighing Elena behind.

Unlike her, Riya’s eyes flashed, and she excitedly said, "Mom, since big brother said this, we’ll definitely be fine."

Elena nodded, but inwardly she smiled bitterly.

She had already found out from Vivian that Paul had become a Grade Three Novice Warrior a year ago while Eric had just become a Grade One.

So, how could he take care of everything?

...

After entering the room, Eric directly entered the bathroom and looked at the white powder in the small container near the bathtub.
