SSS-RANK: Super Extraction System-Chapter 28: [] Prince of Shadows
The darkness wasn’t empty. It was full of voices.
The boy is a vessel.
Kneel.
Betrayed.
Serve me.
Leon floated in a void of ink. He felt untethered, drifting between life and death. The pain of the battle was gone, replaced by a cold numbness.
Then, a light pierced the dark.
Not the harsh white light of Justin’s cage.
It was a soft, sterile blue.
"Vital signs stabilizing," a voice said. It sounded distant, muffled by water. "Core integration complete. But the readings... they’re off the charts."
Leon opened his eyes.
The light burned. He blinked rapidly, his vision clearing.
He was staring at a white ceiling. He lay in a bed, hooked up to machines that hummed and beeped rhythmically.
He tried to sit up. His body felt heavy, alien.
"Easy," a familiar voice commanded.
Leon turned his head.
Commander Rostova sat in a chair next to the bed. She looked exhausted. Her uniform was wrinkled, and her eyes were red-rimmed.
"Where..." Leon’s voice was a croak. "Where am I?"
"Secure med-bay. Vanguard Academy," Rostova said. She poured a glass of water and held it to his lips. "You’ve been out for three days."
"Three days?" Leon drank greedily. "The squad? Rhino? Justin?"
Rostova’s face hardened. She set the glass down.
"Rhino is in critical condition," she said quietly. "He lost an arm, and the toxin damage was severe. But he’s alive. The medics say he’s too stubborn to die."
Leon let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
"And Jinx?"
Rostova looked away. She reached into her pocket and pulled out two sets of dog tags. She placed them on the bedside table.
One set belonged to Jinx. The other to Justin.
"They didn’t make it," Rostova said. Her voice didn’t waver, but her hands were clenched tight. "They died so you could finish the mission."
Leon stared at the metal tags. They glinted in the harsh light.
Kaelen, the veteran who promised to kill him if he turned. Jinx, the girl who blew up her own heart to save them.
Gone.
A heavy silence filled the room. Leon felt a cold hollowness in his chest. It wasn’t grief. It was something deeper. A void where his innocence used to be.
"Dust," Rostova confirmed. "The clean-up crew found traces of A-Rank ash. And... something else."
She looked at Leon with a strange intensity.
"Leon. What did you do down there?"
"I killed him."
"We know that. But your scans..." She picked up a datapad. "Your Empty Shadow Core is gone. It didn’t just refill. It evolved."
She turned the screen to him.
"The Federation sensors can’t even classify it. It’s registering as a mix of human genetic energy and... Royal Shadow essence. You’re not F-Rank anymore. You’re not even on the scale."
Leon looked at the screen. The energy graph was a chaotic mess of black and violet spikes.
"I extracted him," Leon admitted. "I took his shadow."
Rostova went pale. "You extracted a Marquis? That’s... that shouldn’t be possible. The psychic backlash alone should have liquidated your brain."
"It tried," Leon whispered.
He closed his eyes and focused inward.
He called the System.
It responded instantly. But it felt different. Smoother. More responsive. And darker.
A new interface materialized in his vision. It wasn’t the old blue box. It was sleek, black obsidian with pulsing crimson text.

"Shadow Prince," Leon murmured.
"What?" Rostova asked.
"Nothing." Leon dismissed the screen. He looked at Rostova. "What happens now?"
"Now?" Rostova stood up. She walked to the window, looking out at the academy grounds. "Now we hide you."
She turned back to him.
"Kain wasn’t working alone. His death has sent ripples through the Evernight Alliance. We’re picking up chatter. They know a Royal Shadow fell. They know something killed him."
"Do they know it was me?"
"Not yet. But secrets like this don’t stay hidden forever. The Federation is already asking questions about the energy spike. If they find out you absorbed a Marquis... they won’t treat you like a hero. They’ll treat you like a weapon. Or a lab rat."
She walked back to the bed.
"Your family has been moved. Level 5 Safe House. New identities. They’re safe."
Leon relaxed slightly. "Thank you."
"Don’t thank me yet. I can’t protect you here. Not anymore."
She leaned in close.
"You need to get stronger, Leon. Fast. You’re a big fish in a small pond, and the sharks are circling. Once you’re discharged, your ’official’ file will say you were injured and transferred to a remedial program."
"And unofficially?"
"Unofficially," Rostova said, her eyes grim, "you hunt. You find the rest of those Key Fragments. You figure out what this Monarch system really is. And you prepare for war."
She patted his shoulder.
"Rest up. You’re going back to class tomorrow."
Rostova left the room.
Leon was alone.
He swung his legs over the side of the bed. He stood up.
He felt steady. Strong.
He walked to the window. It was night. The academy grounds were quiet.
Leon looked at his reflection in the glass.
He looked the same. Same dark hair. Same face.
But his eyes...
For a split second, his reflection’s eyes flashed crimson.
Leon blinked, and it was gone.
He raised his hand.
"Iron," he whispered.
A shadow peeled itself off the wall. It swirled and condensed, forming the shape of the Vampire Knight. But it was different now. Stronger. Denser. The blue flames in its eyes were brighter.
And beside Iron, another shadow began to form.
It was smaller. Hunched. But it radiated a power that made the air in the room vibrate.
It formed into the shape of Marquis Valerius. But stripped of his flesh, he was a wraith of pure darkness, wearing a tattered cloak of smoke.
[ SHADOW SERVANT: THE FALLEN MARQUIS ]
[ RANK: ELITE (DOWNGRADED) ]
[ STATUS: AWAITING COMMAND ]
Leon looked at his new servant. The monster that had terrorized him. The creature that had killed Justin.
Now, it knelt before him.
Leon felt a wave of revulsion, followed immediately by a rush of cold satisfaction.
"Return," Leon commanded.
Both shadows dissolved instantly, sinking back into Leon’s own shadow.
He looked down at the dog tags on the table. He picked them up, clenching them in his fist until the metal bit into his skin.
He felt the weight of the crown pressing down on him. The title "Shadow Prince" wasn’t a gift. It was a burden.
He was stronger than ever. Level 15. Stats that rivaled a C-Rank veteran. An army of two in his shadow.
But as he looked out at the lights of the dorms, where students were sleeping, studying, laughing... he felt an immense, icy chasm opening between him and them.
They were playing at being heroes.
He was becoming a monster to kill monsters.
Leon turned away from the window. The shadows in the room seemed to bow as he passed.
He was more powerful than he had ever dreamed.
And he was more alone than he had ever been.
