Chapter 8: Unified Awakening Ceremony

"As per Edenbridge High's tradition, students will be called based on their school ranking, from the lowest to highest!"

On the stage, a middle-aged man with a muscular body and bronze-like brown skin was announcing the start of the Unified Awakening Ceremony.

The broadcasting equipment was centered on him as he made his opening remarks. He was none other than the Principal of Edenbridge High School, a powerful SS-rank Awakener.

One of his greatest feats was that during a demon invasion, he fought against a Demon Lord and offered that Demon Lord's head to those who had died during the demon invasion.

As for the demons brought by the Demon Lord, needless to say, they were like a flock of sheep being slaughtered by a wolf.

As if that wasn't enough, the Principal was bold enough to give the Demon World a taste of their own medicine. He invaded the Demon World through the dimensional gate used by the decapitated Demon Lord and destroyed a country there.

That happened just two years ago. Since then, the Demon World rarely invades at a large scale since the Demon World was like the situation on Earth, where countless dimensional gates connecting to several Otherworlds had occurred. It gave the Demon World a headache as Earth was just one of the few Otherworlds they had to deal with.

Remembering the history of the Otherworld, Ainsworth pondered, 'I wonder what's the origin of these dimensional gates? Out of nowhere, mana and aura appeared and allowed the Earth to evolve and awaken a World Will.'

'Because of the active involvement of the Earth's Will which assisted the human race in performing Otherworld Invasions via Otherworld Missions, the human race was catching up to the other powerful races in the universe.'

'Although the human race wasn't that powerful, they weren't that weak either and a lot of weaker Otherworlds feared earthlings.'

'I don't know how powerful that mysterious organization who gouged out my older sister's eyes but I'd eventually meet them, especially in an Otherworld where the son of destiny had a powerful eye bloodline since they love collecting those.'

'Although, it's ironic that to save itself during the Otherworld Invasion, the Earth did the same to weaker worlds and let humans invade them and plunder those weaker worlds' origin, allowing the Earth to become stronger at the expense of the destruction of weaker worlds.'

Ainsworth knew that was the essence of becoming an Awakener. Even the teachers in Edenbridge High, in their lectures, didn't hide that and allowed students to know about the dark side behind the Otherworld Mission.

Because of that, humans were no different from the demons who invaded them. The only difference was that, unlike the demons who were demons, they were humans.

Really, it's just a difference in race, but the humans on Earth brought more destruction to weaker worlds during their Otherworld Mission compared to the demon race.

As for why, the demons rarely invade Otherworlds that weren't adjacent to it. As for the humans on Earth, the Earth would assign them to weaker worlds regardless of distance as long as it was a world that the Earth's Will could bypass its world barrier.

'Sigh, if I was really the protagonist, I might have been a holy mother who would say that destroying weaker worlds for the sake of Earth and humanity's survival would be wrong. Then become a misunderstood character who'd be labeled as humanity's greatest traitor due to siding with the races from those Otherworlds.'

'Or maybe, that kind of novel with that kind of protagonist no longer sells well? I remember before I died, in my past life, such novels only worked if they could be adapted into an anime. Otherwise, a lot of web novels were better than it yet those web novels weren't adapted into an animation version.'

While Ainsworth was getting sidetracked and lost in his thoughts, the Unified Awakening Ceremony soon started.

Dante might be sleeping, but Rian and Ainsworth weren't interested as well in watching the Awakening Ceremony of those "extras".

There were 50 students per class, and there were seven classes in their grade. In other words, in a school year, there were 350 students.

Since the lowest-ranking student would be the first to go followed by the second lowest, up until the highest, it would take a lot of time for it to be their turn since they were in the Top 10.

Furthermore, to save time, students below the Top 100 would be awakened in batches of 10, rather than individually.

Not only to save time, but honestly, they weren't the highlight and at least Edenbridge High was still humane in that regard. In other high schools, only the Top 100 would be shown in the live broadcast, and those students below it wouldn't even be given a chance of a few seconds of screen time with their batch.

To pass the time, Rian asked him, "How many underdogs do you think would there be who'd make a comeback?"

Ainsworth shrugged, "I don't think there would be that many students below the Top 100 awakening an S-rank Class. I think there might only be twenty-ish students who could awaken an S-rank Class."

While Rian and Ainsworth were chatting, the Unified Awakening Ceremony was going on as usual.

Soon enough, approximately two hours and 41 minutes had passed, and it was finally Rian's turn to go on stage and awaken his class.

At this time, Ainsworth had already awakened Dante since Dante was the Rank 7 student while Rian was the Rank 9.

Fortunately, both Rian and Dante's Awakening Ceremony went well. Rian awakened the SS-rank Hero of Light class while Dante awakened the SSS-rank Immovable Shield class.

When it was Caspian's turn, Caspian looked at him provocatively as if saying with his eyes, "You better not awaken a class lower in rank than mine, or else I'd publicly humiliate you."

When Caspian went on stage and awakened his class, he did even worse than Dante despite being Rank 4, and he only awakened an SS-rank Blazing Knight class.

After Caspian's turn, the Principal adjusted his microphone, his voice echoing across the Awakening Facility:

"And now, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for one of the greatest highlights in this year's Unified Awakening Ceremony!"

The crowd, specifically the students and school staff present in the Awakening Facility, which had started to dull from the repetitive awakenings, suddenly became excited.

The principal continued, "This next student stands at the pinnacle of talent and excellence, holding the prestigious Rank 3 among Edenbridge High's elite! A prodigy whose presence shines brighter than the countless stars in the night sky!"

"Ainsworth Arthurford—step forward and awaken your destiny!'
