Sold as the Alpha King's Breeder-Chapter 1674 - 116 : What Life Had Become
*Kryzen*
“We should at least talk about going back home,” I teased Briella lightly.
Briella peeked out from under the plush comforter she was under, her green eyes mischievous. “Sorry, I can’t hear you from all the way up here on this cloud of a bed.”
I shook my head in amusement. The past couple of weeks had flown by. It was about time to start planning on heading back home, but neither of us was quite ready to do so.
We received word from Roy that things were going well at home, so it sounded like we could afford to stay another couple of days.
“We can stay for another couple of days,” I told her while rolling my eyes, but I was grinning at her playfulness.
This trip was a good idea for many reasons. Not only was it a great way for us to get to know our kingdom and celebrate our marriage, but it also felt like a much-needed healing trip after all the turmoil we had gone through.
Now that we were finally in a time of peace, we could enjoy time together and focus on just being with one another.
At least, until we had to go back to being king and queen.
I jumped onto the bed beside Briella and kissed her forehead, wrapping my arms around her. “You can stay in bed for a while longer,” I said. “I’ll make us some breakfast, okay?”
Briella smiled gratefully and nodded. “Sorry, I’m just really tired this morning,” she said. “Maybe I would be up already if someone hadn’t insisted on keeping me up for half the night.”
I kissed her again unapologetically before I left the room so that she could go back to sleep.
As fun as it had been to live as nomads in the Whispering Woods by sleeping on soft enchanted grass, we were both missing the feeling of sheets and plush comforters.
We ended up finding a large guest house to book that was right by the water with the main island in the distance. The walls were made of a colorful glass material that allowed us to look out over the gorgeous scenery.
The kitchen was large and came equipped with everything we needed to cook for ourselves. I grinned to myself as I made some eggs and pancakes. Cooking for Briella this way reminded me of when I made soup for her back in Celestial City.
The reason for me cooking for her back then wasn’t a happy occasion, but it was one of the early moments that made me realize I was attracted to her.
As I flipped some of the thin cakes onto a plate, I marveled at what my life had become. I didn’t expect to become an Alpha, let alone a king of a different realm.
Somehow, my new role wasn’t the most shocking part of my current life.
Growing up, my only goal was ever to become a warrior. I expected that I would one day marry and find a mate, but I never expected that a woman would change and complete my life so entirely.
I knew better now, and I was going to keep her forever.
I set a couple of glasses of fruit juice on the tray next to the food and made my way back down the hall so that my wife and I could enjoy a delicious breakfast in bed.
I couldn’t think of anything more domestic than that. It was far from what I thought my life as a general would be like.
I had left the door slightly ajar when I left the room an hour earlier and nudged it open with my foot as I returned with our meal.
My eyebrows shot upward when I immediately noticed that the bed was empty.
“Briella?” I called, setting the tray on the nightstand so that I could go search for my missing wife. She had seemed exhausted, so I was surprised that she got up.
“In here.”
I immediately grew concerned. Her voice was coming from the attached bathroom, and it sounded weak.
“What’s wrong?” I demanded, pushing the white door open.
I gasped and rushed to Briella’s side. She had her head bent over the toilet, her hands gripping the bowl tightly. She looked up at me with a small smile, but her face was pale.
“Sorry,” she said. “I was just feeling a little ill.”
I stroked the back of my knuckles along her cheek. She looked flushed, and her skin was warm. My frown deepened as I helped her off the bathroom floor without a word, scooping her up into my arms and carrying her out of the bathroom.
“Kryzen, I can walk,” she squeaked with embarrassment.
I completely ignored her as she continued to protest. I crossed the bedroom and set her down on the soft bed. I tucked her in tightly, helping her to sit up against the headboard.
I handed her one of the cups of fruit juice. “Here, drink this,” I told her, watching her closely until she obeyed and took a couple of small sips. She passed the cup back to me and then collapsed against the pillows tiredly, seeming barely able to keep her eyes open.
“Just rest,” I told her tenderly, moving some hair away from her forehead. “How are you feeling now?”
She blinked up at me. “Tired,” she said. “And a bit nauseous.”
“I wonder if it was something you ate,” I said, continuing to stroke her hair.
Briella nodded. “Maybe,” she said.
“Can you eat a little bit?” I asked, not liking how weak and pale she looked. Maybe eating something would help settle her stomach.
Briella winced as if the thought of eating physically pained her, but she nodded, probably realizing that she should eat. “Maybe some soup like you made me that first time back in Celestial City?” she asked.
I smiled, pleased that she was thinking back on that day just as I had. I kissed her on the forehead before making my way to the kitchen to prepare some soup.
I worked quickly, anxious to get back to Briella since she wasn’t feeling well. I made a simple broth with noodles, hoping the mildness would soothe her stomach. I added a few crackers onto a plate and made my way back to my wife.
Briella turned her head to look at me as I entered. She pushed herself up and leaned back against the padded headboard.
“How are you feeling now?” I asked, setting the tray down next to the other one with our forgotten breakfast.
“A little better,” she said. She bit her lip and looked down at the comforter covering her legs. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize for not feeling well,” I scolded lightly. I scooped up some broth and noodles with a spoon and blew carefully to cool it before holding it up to her lips.
Briella opened her mouth obediently, smiling after she swallowed the bite. “Thank you, it’s really good, but I can feed myself.” She reached for the bowl, but I just held it out of her reach.
“You need to rest,” I told her. “You can feed yourself when you’re feeling better.”
“I am feeling better,” Briella protested, frowning at me as she reached for the spoon.
I pulled it away from her, out of her reach. “Are you still tired and nauseous?”
She bit her lip and looked away, confirming my suspicions.
“Hey,” I said gently, grabbing her chin and tilting her face toward me. “Let me help you, Briella. I want to take care of you. Believe it or not, I actually enjoy it, okay?”
Briella looked at me stubbornly for a moment. I was pleased to see some fire in her eyes, but the look softened, and she nodded.
She was able to finish half of the soup and even ate a couple of the crackers before she announced she couldn’t eat anymore. I nodded and tucked her back into bed. “If you’re not feeling any better in the next couple of hours, I’m taking you home,” I warned her.
Briella just nodded tiredly before closing her eyes.
I ate a little bit of the breakfast I had made for us before climbing into bed beside her, pulling her against me, and stroking her hair while she slept, praying for her to get better soon.
It became clear not too long later that Briella was not feeling better. In fact, she was feeling much worse. She woke suddenly in my arms, her eyes wide and alarmed. She croaked out that she needed the bathroom. I scooped her up in my arms again before rushing her there. She barely lifted the toilet lid before throwing up what little she’d eaten that day.
I held her hair out of her face until she was done, rubbing her back soothingly and feeling absolutely helpless. I helped her to the sink so she could wash her mouth out. She didn’t even protest when I picked her up after she was done so I could carry her back to the bed.
That concerned me more than anything else.
“We’re going home,” I announced firmly, already turning to start packing up our stuff.
I raced around the room, tossing things into our bags in a rush. If we hurried, we could catch the next train back to the kingdom. I debated calling to have someone get us but quickly calculated that having someone drive out would take longer than us taking the train back. Plus, the train had beds that Briella could sleep on.
I turned to Briella once I set our bags by the door. My eyes widened when I saw she was crying.
“Briella,” I said in alarm, my hands cupping her face. “What’s wrong? Are you in pain?”
Briella shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “I don’t want to leave,” she cried brokenly.
My heart felt like it was breaking. I wrapped my arms around her. “Shh, we need to go,” I told her. “We need to get you to a healer so that you can get better.”
Briella wiped her eyes, her lower lip trembling. “But this whole trip has been like a dream,” she said. “I don’t want it to end.”
“Shh,” I soothed, wiping her tears away with my thumbs. “We’ll come back soon. I promise. Maybe we can even do this a couple of times a year.”
Briella looked up at me through watery eyes. It was doing nothing to soothe my worries. She wasn’t normally this emotional. It must have been because of her illness.
I held Briella in my arms as we boarded the train. The workers were extremely helpful. They had soup brought in for Briella and upgraded our room to a larger suite. I had her all tucked up in bed after she had a few sips of broth.
I held Briella close against my chest as she slept fitfully throughout the entire ride. I knew I made the right choice by taking the train instead of calling for someone from the palace to drive out, but I was still cursing at the fact that the train couldn’t go any faster.
I spent the whole ride with Briella tucked tightly against my body, praying she would be alright.
