Sold as the Alpha King's Breeder-Chapter 1650 - 92 : Into Battle
*Kryzen*
The time had finally come. We had all gathered to take the fight to Tian and his shadows. With all of us in one place ready for battle, I would have expected rallying cries and motivational speeches. But what met me was a calm before the storm.
The stillness was unnerving, a silent symphony that rang in my ears. I had seen it before—the pause as if the very air held its breath, bracing for the chaos to come. Soldiers around me sat clutching their weapons, eyes closed or staring into nothingness. I could almost hear their silent prayers and goodbyes, each one a private vigil.
"Kryzen?" Briella’s voice cut through the quiet like a gentle blade.
I turned toward her, forcing a smile. "Yes?"
"Are you... praying?" Her bright green eyes searched mine, a mix of amusement and concern within their depths.
"Something like that," I said, my gaze drifting over the warriors again. "It’s strange, isn’t it, this calm?"
Briella nodded, the dark waves of her hair brushing against her cheeks. "It’s like the world’s holding its breath." She glanced around, her lips pursed in thought. "But we’ll make it through. We always do."
"Always is a long time," I murmured, my thoughts spiraling back to battles past—ruthless, unforgiving clashes that left scars on both land and soul.
"Hey." Briella’s hand found mine, her grip firm. "We’ve got this. You’ve got this. And I’m right here with you. Isn’t that what you said last night?"
I squeezed her hand, reassurance flowing through her touch. I knew she was a force to be reckoned with, her prowess in battle matched only by the intensity of her spirit. But fear gnawed at me. It was a fear far more piercing than the prospect of my own demise. The thought of losing Briella was a weight that threatened to crush me.
"Promise me something," I said, the words heavy on my tongue.
"Anything," she replied without hesitation.
"Stay close," I pleaded, the warrior in me clashing with the man who loved her more than his next breath.
She chuckled, the sound rich with warmth. "You think I’d let you charge into battle without me? Who else is going to watch your back, Kryzen Stormfall?"
"Nobody," I admitted, a half-smile tugging at my lips despite the dread coiling in my gut. "But Briella, if things go sideways–"
"Stop," she interrupted, her expression turning stern. "We’re not speaking of ifs and maybes. We’re walking out of this together."
I wanted to believe her and wrap myself in the certainty she offered. But as I looked at her—one so fierce, yet so precious—I couldn’t help but feel the shadow of what might be. Losing her would be my undoing.
"Let’s just survive first," I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Survive then thrive," she declared, a resolute glint in her eye. "We fight for those we love, and we win."
"We win," I echoed, drawing strength from her conviction. With Briella by my side, maybe the fates would be kind. “We’re walking out of this together or not at all."
I stood at the edge of our gathered forces, looking out at all the faces. The warriors from lands near and far shared the same grim determination that was etched on my face. Magic wielders, cloaked in robes that shimmered with potential energy, murmured incantations, their hands glowing with imminent power. My gaze swept over them. I found myself nodding as if to affirm our readiness. It was time.
"Ready or not," I muttered under my breath, my fingers tightening around the hilt of my sword.
The air before us began to crackle and hum, an ethereal symphony heralding the arrival of the portal. It spiraled open like a wound in the world, a swirling vortex of blues and purples, a gateway to the unknown that beckoned us forward.
"Remember your training," I called out to the troops, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "Keep your wits about you."
"Is there ever truly a way to be ready for what’s beyond?" Briella mused aloud. Her presence beside me was both a comfort and a constant source of worry.
"Maybe not," I replied, meeting her bright green eyes, "but we face it together."
As I took Briella’s hand, the connection between us felt electric, a spark that could ignite the courage needed to confront the darkness ahead. Her grip was strong and unyielding as if she could tether me to life itself. Side by side, we stepped toward the swirling portal.
"Through hell and back," she said, her voice laced with a blend of jest and solemn oath.
"Through hell and back," I echoed, allowing the sliver of a smile to surface.
With our hands clasped tightly, we led the charge, plunging into the portal’s embrace. The transition was a rush of cold and light, the world bending and twisting until. Just as quickly as it had taken us, it released us on the other side.
"Still with me?" I asked, even though I felt her hand in mine.
"Where else would I be?" Briella’s reply came, her tone fierce yet playful.
We emerged into shadow, but the shadows were not enough to quell the fire that burned within us. It was a fire to fight, protect, and emerge victorious. For a heartbeat, we stood united on the threshold of battle, ready to step forth into legend or oblivion.
The chill of the cave seeped into my bones as we materialized, the portal closing behind us with a soft hum that echoed off the stony walls. We were in the bowels of the world now, a network of tunnels that led to the shadow land. Briella’s hand was still in mine, her presence a constant source of strength as we began our descent.
"Keep your eyes sharp," I murmured, scanning the darkness that stretched ahead of us. "We want the element of surprise, but we don’t know what awaits us."
"Be vigilant," she replied, her voice low but clear. The soldiers and magic wielders fell into step behind us, a silent army moving as one through the belly of the earth.
The air grew heavier as we progressed, the weight of the unseen city above pressing down on us. Our footsteps were muffled, and our breaths measured as if the cave itself demanded quiet from those who dared traverse it.
"Split up here," I instructed when we reached a fork in the tunnel. Half of our forces peeled away, their footsteps fading as they took the left path. Briella squeezed my hand before letting go, a silent promise hanging between us.
"May the light guide them," she said. Her gaze followed the departing soldiers.
"And may it protect us all," I added, feeling the absence of her touch like a missing piece of armor.
We continued on the right path, leading us deeper and closer to our goal. My heart thrummed against my ribs from the anticipation of what lay ahead. Every step forward was a step toward the unknown, yet there was no turning back.
"Kryzen," Briella spoke up, breaking the silence, "when this is over–"
"We will have time for ’when this is over’ after we win," I interrupted, not wanting to jinx the future with dreams that might never come to pass.
"Stubborn," she chided, but there was warmth in her tone. "Just remember you owe me a dance."
"A dance?" I couldn’t help but chuckle, the sound seeming out of place in the grim surroundings.
"Yes," she affirmed. "One with less peril, hopefully."
"Agreed," I said, the word a vow.
The tunnel opened up to a vast expanse, signaling the end of our underground journey. We halted at the edge, peering into the cavernous space that would soon bear witness to the fate of our lands. It was eerily quiet, the kind of quiet that made your skin prickle with unease.
"Steady now," I breathed, meeting Briella’s gaze. Our hands found each other again, not for reassurance but for solidarity. "Together."
"Together," she whispered back.
The damp stone beneath my boots echoed with every step, a hollow sound that seemed to travel up through the soles and wrap around my heart. I could sense the tension in the air, thick as the darkness that enveloped us.
"Keep your eyes sharp," I muttered again to the group, even though my gaze was fixated on the path ahead. The flickering light from our torches cast long, wavering shadows against the walls, making the passage seem alive with movement. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
"Kryzen, look," Briella’s voice cut through the silence, her hand gripping my arm. She pointed toward a series of structures lining the cavern wall. My stomach turned as I took in the sight of empty cages. Their doors hung open, swaying slightly as if recently disturbed.
"Empty," I whispered, feeling the weight of what this could mean. "We need to move faster."
"Could they have known we were coming?" one of the soldiers asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Quiet," I snapped more harshly than intended. We couldn’t afford to panic now. "Stay alert. They might still be nearby."
The group tightened their ranks, weapons at the ready, as we continued forward. Every sense was heightened, but nothing prepared us for what met us around the next bend.
Red eyes, glowing like embers in the dark, appeared before us. Several hulking shapes detached themselves from the shadows, bearing down on us with a predatory grace that belied their size.
"Steady!" I called out, drawing my sword with a swift motion that mirrored the years of training etched into my muscle memory. "Protect the mages, and let them focus their spells!"
"By your command," Briella acknowledged, her own blade singing as it left its sheath. The creatures advanced, snarls rumbling from their throats, a sound that threatened to freeze the bravest hearts.
"Remember your oath!" I bellowed to the soldiers who stood with me, their faces set with grim determination. "For Embervale!"
"For Embervale!" the chorus rang out, bolstering our courage.
"Light them up, now!" I heard Briella shout to the magic wielders. A moment later, arcs of brilliant energy surged past us, colliding with the first creature. It howled a terrible sound that echoed off the walls and made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
"Keep pushing forward! Don’t let them surround us!" I ordered, stepping into the fray. My blade met resistance, the tough hide of the beasts resisting the steel’s bite. But we were well-prepared, our resolve as sharp as our weapons.
"Kryzen, to your left!" the warning came just in time, and I pivoted, blocking a clawed swipe that could have been my end.
"Thanks," I grunted, not needing to see who had alerted me. Briella was always there, watching my back as I watched hers.
"Let’s give them a fight to remember," she said, her voice fierce with the thrill of battle. Together, we stood against the red-eyed menace, our bond a silent promise that we would face whatever came, side by side.
The creatures swarmed us in droves, their red eyes like burning coals in the dim light of the cave. The clashing of steel and the guttural snarls of our adversaries filled the air with the cacophony of battle. We had an advantage in numbers. For a time, that was enough. With each swing of my sword and every spell Briella cast, we held the line.
"Keep pressing on!" I yelled over the din of combat. Our forces were strong, but the creatures were relentless, and more kept coming from the shadows.
"Kryzen, we can’t hold them all back!" Briella’s voice was tense but clear above the noise. "We need to move!"
She was right. I signaled to the captains, and they shouted orders, forming a rear guard to cover our retreat. "Fall back! Protect the flanks!"
Briella’s hand gripped mine. Her touch was both comforting and electrifying in the heat of battle. We sprinted forward with the rest of the soldiers, leaving behind a contingent to fend off the horde of beasts.
"Stay close!" I urged through gritted teeth as we darted around stalagmites and leaped over fallen creatures. Briella’s green eyes flashed in determination, a silent vow that she wouldn’t let any harm come to me if she could help it.
"I’m not leaving your side," she replied breathlessly, her dark hair whipping behind her as we ran.
We encountered more creatures lurking within the winding tunnels, their forms emerging from the darkness like nightmares given flesh. Our soldiers fought bravely, cutting down each threat that rose against us. Briella’s magic blazed brilliantly, casting eerie shadows on the cave walls as she conjured fire that seared our enemies.
"Nearly there!" I called out, recognizing the signs of the cavern’s entrance ahead. My heart pounded not only from the exertion but also from the anticipation of what lay beyond.
The mouth of the cavern yawned before us, an expanse of darkness that promised even greater dangers. We entered cautiously, our footsteps echoing in the vast emptiness. Silence enveloped us, a strange contrast to the chaos we had left behind. It felt unnatural as if the very air was holding its breath.
"Something’s not right," Briella whispered, her gaze sweeping across the cavern. Her instincts were sharp, honed by countless hours of training and battle.
"Stay alert," I murmured, peering into the shadows. Our soldiers fanned out with weapons in hand, each of us waiting for the unseen threat to reveal itself. We were a tight unit, bound by a shared purpose and the unspoken oaths we carried in our hearts.
"Whatever comes next," I said softly, squeezing Briella’s hand once more, "we face it together."
"Together," she repeated. Her voice was steady despite the uncertainty that hung in the air like a shroud. We stood side by side in the eerie quiet of the cavern, warriors poised for the storm we knew was coming.
A chill ran down my spine as we stood in silence, the cavern’s darkness pressing in like a suffocating blanket. Briella’s hand was warm in mine, a reassuring presence that kept my fears at bay.
"Keep your eyes peeled," I whispered to the group. "The enemy could be lurking in any shadow."
I felt rather than saw Briella nod beside me, her grip tightening ever so slightly. The soldiers shuffled their feet, their unease palpable even without a word spoken. We were a mosaic of warriors from different lands, yet fear and anticipation rendered us indistinguishable from one another.
"Kryzen, what if–" Briella began, but her words cut off abruptly.
In the blink of an eye, a figure materialized before us as if conjured from the very air. It was General Tian. His appearance was so sudden and silent that it sent a collective jolt through our ranks. Soldiers gasped, weapons lifted reflexively toward the new arrival.
