Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse-Chapter 377: The Norm of Life and Death
Chapter 377: Chapter 377: The Norm of Life and Death
After discussing the construction of the base, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng said goodbye to Lu Jianguo and left his office.
It was still clear weather, and since there were no warnings between disasters, they could only be constantly prepared, wearing helmets, raincoats, rain boots, and sunglasses.
However, the warm sunshine truly felt comforting; the sky was azure blue with white clouds floating—such a sight had not been seen in a long time. Gu Pan took out her camera and quickly snapped a few photos.
Then, the two went to the hospital to check on Chen Fengzhou and Yang Jia’s condition.
Upon entering the hospital room, Chen Lang and Wang Lijuan were in Chen Fengzhou’s room. Seeing Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng arrive while he was awake, he tried to sit up, supporting himself with his hand.
Lu Ruisheng quickly went over to support him. "Don’t get up; just focus on healing."
Chen Fengzhou’s condition was still manageable. "My aunt told me if it wasn’t for the medicine you provided, I wouldn’t have survived."
Gu Pan said, "We’re friends; there’s no need to be so formal. Just focus on your recovery, and don’t worry about food, necessities, or medicine."
Chen Fengzhou nodded, then looked at his leg. "Actually, actually, these medicines are somewhat wasted on me. In the apocalypse, a disabled person like me will eventually be eliminated."
Chen Lang quickly said, "I’m also disabled, and I don’t think like that at all. A person isn’t only about physical labor; you were always a writer. You have your hands and your brain; what’s there to fear?"
Chen Fengzhou sighed. "It’s still different now. In the apocalypse, if I need to run, I can’t run with my legs like this. I’m either dragging you down or increasing your burden. I really feel like I’m a burden now."
Gu Pan comforted him, "Don’t think too much for now. Being alive is already good. What if the apocalypse ends tomorrow?"
Wang Lijuan continued from where Gu Pan left off, "Right, maybe the apocalypse ends soon. If something really happens later, that’s for the future. At least for now, everyone wants you alive."
While they were talking, a patient in the next bed suddenly had a high fever, leading to convulsions. Chen Lang, who was at the door, quickly helped by shouting for a doctor.
Soon, a doctor and a nurse arrived.
The nurse immediately pulled the curtain that separated them, and the doctor began emergency treatment on the patient.
Separated by the curtain, Gu Pan and the others couldn’t see inside but could hear everything, which was quite alarming.
After a while, they heard the doctor sigh from behind the curtain, "Without medicine, it’s all up to fate."
Afterward, the curtain was opened, and although there was temporary calm, the patient looked very pale.
Gu Pan and the others didn’t know the details of the resuscitation process, but they understood that it was only a temporary relief or suppression. The hospital was running out of all medicines, whether expired or not.
However, Gu Pan couldn’t play the Holy Mother by distributing medicine. First, her own supply was limited with many relatives and friends to consider, and second, it would cause problems if she provided medicine to some but not others, potentially making her the villain. So, she couldn’t afford to act like the Holy Mother.
After the doctor and nurse left, the patient on the adjacent bed stared blankly at the ceiling, saying nothing. Gu Pan and the others didn’t dare offer unsolicited comfort in this situation, and they felt it inappropriate to stay long, so they said their goodbyes and left.
Wang Lijuan escorted them out, speaking only when they reached the staircase. "Fengzhou still doesn’t know that Yang Jia hasn’t woken up. Please keep it from him for now."
Gu Pan asked, "But doesn’t Fengzhou suspect something, since Yang Jia hasn’t visited?"
"I told him Yang Jia had major surgery and needs to stay in the ICU for a few more days before she can be discharged. He wanted to visit, but we told him that the base doesn’t have enough wheelchairs; we’re trying to get one," Wang Lijuan said with a tone full of sorrow.
Gu Pan nodded. "Alright, then let’s not mention it. Fengzhou is already feeling hopeless; knowing about Yang Jia’s condition would only make him more pessimistic. Let’s delay the wheelchair situation for him."
"Indeed, we can only do that. We’ll get the wheelchair later; he isn’t in a condition to get out of bed now, his injuries are too severe. If not for your medicine, he wouldn’t have survived the infection," Wang Lijuan spoke with gratitude.
Gu Pan was worried about Wang Lijuan thinking too much. "Auntie, don’t think too much. You still have to take care of the patient and watch your own health. We’ll head back now."
Wang Lijuan nodded and watched them leave before returning to the hospital room.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng exited the hospital, looking at the sky outside where the sunshine was lovely. But beneath this sunshine, who knew how many normal creatures or people remained, and even if normal, how much normalcy still existed within people’s hearts?
While heading home, Guo Gang was fixing up the container houses. When they were cleaning the yard, they had stacked these near the front gate. Now that they were repaired, they pondered whether they could be placed on the second floor of the villa.
Everyone liked this idea. Lu Ruisheng returned to his room to gather many tools and joined Guo Gang in the repairs.
The perimeter walls had collapsed thoroughly, making it unnecessary to repair them. Later, they would just make the doors, like the security door of the house, safer by shrinking but reinforcing the safety zone, making it easier to defend.
At this time, others in the villa area were also fixing houses, with some severely damaged beyond repair, leaving no choice but to abandon them.
There were previously empty houses, but now there weren’t enough to accommodate everyone, as too many had collapsed.
Thus, the villa area now had people sharing houses, with two or three families living together.
Single people from the base were living in the base dormitories as much as possible to save beds. Others had no choice but to move to the Underground City.
Now privacy or comfort was no longer a priority but how to ensure the survival of as many people as possible.
The department store was also different from before, with nothing much for sale, as the base now grew its vegetables and sweet potatoes and periodically distributed vegetables and maggots.
Clothing wasn’t affordable either with many losing their homes, and contribution points washed away by floods, so the base had set up aid stations. Those in dire need without clothing could get supplies, but they needed proofs, like proving their homes had been destroyed, to receive anything.
The barbershop did even worse business as most people cut their hair themselves, not spending money on such things.
Lu Xuerong’s tailoring shop also closed, and the sewing machine was brought back home; not many needed tailoring services anymore, and no one paid much attention to appearances. Clothes being slightly too big or small wasn’t a big deal as those who were wealthy already had clothes, and there was hardly any possibility of adding anything new now.
When Lu Xuerong returned home feeling low, Gu Pan gave her some fabric to make new clothes for everyone; after all, everyone’s clothes were somewhat worn out.
Lu Xuerong couldn’t bear to use just new fabric, so she used whatever remnants were left, creating clothes that were mostly patched up...
Though they weren’t much to look at, having new clothes at the base was considered a rare good day.
