Shadow Contract-Chapter 29: Yoru Kikan
The briefing room was colder than usual. The air conditioning hummed overhead, a sharp, mechanical sound that cut through the silence. Isaac stood at the head of the table wearing his glasses, which reflected the light from the projector. The screen behind him was black, with white text scrolling down fast.
The crew sat around the table with Dante at the center and Sophie to his right. Kisuke leaned back in his chair, his hand in his pocket touching the drive. The black plastic was cold against his fingers, but he did not take it out.
"Three days of analysis," Isaac said. His voice was calm, but there was a tension in his shoulders. "We traced the financials. We traced the communications. We traced the command structure." He clicked a remote, and the screen changed. A logo appeared: a simple black circle with a white crescent inside. "Edward is not acting alone," Isaac said. "He is not even the primary authority."
Dante looked at the logo. He did not recognize it.
(Kairo): "Scan complete. No match in public databases."
(Mūn): "It is not meant to be found."
(Dante): "Show me the name."
"This organization," Isaac continued, "is called Yoru Kikan." He paused, letting the name settle in the room. "Night Agency."
Lisa looked up from her tablet, her fingers stopping their typing. "Never heard of it," she said.
"Because it does not exist," Isaac said. "Not officially." He clicked the remote again, and a map appeared showing Japan and Korea with lines connecting the two countries. "They operate beneath the record. No registration. No tax filings. No public presence."
Isaac walked around the table and stopped behind Dante. "But they are real. And they are old." He pointed to the screen. "They have been intersecting with your operational history for years, Dante."
Dante turned his head to look at Isaac. "Explain."
"Operation Blue River, five years ago. The intel leak that saved you." Isaac tapped the screen, and a file opened. "Source unknown, at the time." He tapped again. "Operation Silent Glass, three years ago. The weapon shipment that vanished before you arrived. Source unknown." Isaac looked at Dante. "It was them. Every time."
The room went quiet, and the hum of the air conditioner seemed louder. Dante felt a shift in his chest.
(Kairo): "Pattern recognized. Inefficiency in past missions was not accidental."
(Mūn): "They were watching. They were guiding."
(Dante): "Why."
"Why help me?" Dante asked.
"Not help," Isaac said. "Steer." He walked back to the head of the table and leaned against it. "They are not a gang. They are not a syndicate. They are an institution." Isaac looked around the room, meeting every eye. "They have reach across borders. Governments turn a blind eye. Police do not investigate. Leadership is unknown. Founding is unknown. Motive is unknown."
Kisuke shifted in his chair, the leather creaking. "So we are fighting a ghost," Kisuke said. His voice was light, but the joke fell flat.
"No," Isaac said. "We are fighting a system."
Sophie spoke, her voice soft but cutting through the tension. "And Edward."
"Edward is a contractor," Isaac said. "He is a tool, not the architect."
Dante stood up, his chair scraping against the floor. "Where is their base?" he asked.
"We do not know," Isaac said. "They move. Like smoke."
Dante walked to the screen and looked at the logo—the black circle and the white crescent. He felt a headache behind his eyes, a sharp spike.
(Kairo): "Memory fragment triggered. Associative link."
(Dante): "Show me."
(Kairo): "Data corrupted. Insufficient power."
(Dante): "Damn it."
Dante gripped the edge of the table until his knuckles turned white. Sophie saw it; she did not move, but her eyes softened. "Dante," she said.
He let go of the table and straightened his coat. "Edward knows where they are," Dante said.
"Likely," Isaac said. "But he is not talking."
"He will," Dante said.
"How?" Eikichi asked, speaking for the first time in his gravelly voice.
"We find Ogata," Dante said. "Edward said Ogata is the key."
Isaac nodded. "The clinic in Sector Two was a decoy. But the financial trail leads to a holding company."
"Name," Dante said.
"Setsuro Holdings."
Dante closed his eyes. "Ogata Setsuro."
"Yes."
Dante opened his eyes. They were turquoise and cold. "Prepare the gear," he said. "We move tonight."
The crew stood up, chairs pushed back and boots hitting the floor. They moved with efficiency and did not question—except Kisuke. He stayed seated for a moment, looking at the drive in his pocket. The woman on the roof had said Sector Five. Isaac said Sector Two was a decoy. Setsuro Holdings led somewhere else. Three different locations. Three different truths.
Kisuke stood up and forced a smile. "Tonight," he said. "No sleep. Got it." He walked to the door, passing Sophie. She looked at him with sharp eyes. She knew he was hiding something. Kisuke did not stop; he walked out into the hallway and the door closed behind him.
Isaac packed his tablet and looked at Dante. "This is bigger than a contract," Isaac said.
"I know," Dante said.
"Yoru Kikan... they do not make mistakes."
"They made one," Dante said.
"Which?"
"They let me live."
Dante walked to the window and looked out at the city. The lights blinked like stars—or like eyes.
(Mūn): "They are watching now."
(Kairo): "We are walking into their design."
(Dante): "Then I will break the design."
Sophie walked up beside him. She did not touch him, but she stood close. "Ogata," she said.
"Yes."
"What if he is not there?"
"Then we burn the building until he comes out."
Sophie looked at his profile and saw the tension in his jaw. She knew the cost and the memory loss, but she said nothing. She turned away and walked to the door. "I will check the vehicles," she said.
"Sophie." She stopped, but did not turn around. "Yes."
"Stay close."
"I always do."
She left the room, leaving Dante alone. The screen behind him was still on, the logo glowing. The black circle and white crescent looked like a closed eye. Dante turned off the projector, and the room went dark. He walked out into the hallway.
The war had changed again. It was no longer about Edward; it was about the shadow behind him. And Dante was done walking in the dark.
