Seizing Destiny From Heavens Hands-Chapter 458: Massive Demon Clan Mobilization, Guarding the Rear
Chapter 458: Massive Demon Clan Mobilization, Guarding the Rear
Several days later, at the Hanlong Forty-One Outpost.
This outpost had been established by the Demon Suppression Guards of Hanlong Fortress.
After the construction of the Xuanwu Forty-One Outpost, the Demon Suppression Guards of the Xuanwu Fortress found themselves with spare capacity and began assisting other units.
Even though there had always been grudges among the three clans, the Demon Suppression Guards stationed in the Demon Suppression Sea were willing to set those aside and unite against a common enemy.
Moreover, helping construct other outposts also relieved pressure on themselves.
After all, if Xuanwu Forty-One were the only outpost, it would surely draw the full brunt of the demon clan’s assault.
With more outposts established, the demons would be forced to divide their attacks.
Inside Hanlong Forty-One Outpost, most of the defenders were water yao, with only a few core members being true jiao dragons.
In fact, not only the outposts but also the main Panlong and Hanlong Fortresses followed the same pattern.
Jiao dragons had low fertility, and true dragonborn were rare.
However, nearly all water yao within the fortresses carried traces of jiao dragon blood.
Because of that, they were naturally loyal to the jiao dragons.
At the top of Hanlong Forty-One Outpost—
Two crab yao were standing guard in the watchtower.
One had a blue-striped shell.
The other had a purple-striped shell.
Both were dozing off.
Suddenly, the blue-striped crab yao twitched as if sensing something. He jolted awake in alarm.
He instinctively shook his companion and said urgently, "Did you feel that? The ground’s shaking! Could it be the demon clan?"
The purple-striped crab yao muttered, "We just repelled them yesterday. The surrounding demon nests have already been cleared. What demons could there be?"
He didn’t even bother to raise his pitch-black eyes.
The blue-striped crab yao hesitated—it did make sense.
Still, he couldn’t help but glance at the dark, dim surroundings outside.
Then he saw it—the darkness was squirming and surging toward the outpost!
His eyes widened in shock, and he instinctively slammed the alarm bell.
DANG! DANG! DANG!
The harsh clang of the bell echoed throughout Hanlong Forty-One Outpost.
All the stationed water yao snapped alert and turned their gazes outward.
What they saw was a massive wave of lesser demons flooding out from the distant shadows.
Among them towered several massive true demons!
“Demon attack! Demon attack!”
The water yao cried out at the top of their lungs.
Alarm bells continued to ring in succession.
The strongest being in Hanlong Forty-One—a peak jiao dragon lord—burst out of his dwelling and ascended to the highest point of the outpost.
That jiao dragon was entirely ice-blue, his gaze sharp and electric.
With one glance, he saw the demon forces pouring from all directions out of the cavern passages.
He also spotted, far off in the distance, a peak true demon lord commanding the horde.
“All jiao dragons and water yao of Hanlong Forty-One Outpost—prepare for battle!”
A thunderous dragon roar shook the air, igniting courage in every jiao dragon and water yao.
The next moment, the demon tide surged forward, and the clash of metal rang out unendingly.
A full-scale battle had erupted!
The same scene unfolded at the Baihu Forty-One and Xueshen Forty-One Outposts.
Only the Xuanwu Forty-One Outpost, due to its favorable location, was the last to be attacked.
DANG! DANG! DANG!
The shrill alarm bell rang out.
Shen Mo had only been resting lightly. At the sound, he immediately stood and stepped outside.
The moment he opened his door, he saw Zhong Baisheng and Wang Xing’an also stepping out at the same time.
The three of them exchanged glances—no words needed—and rushed toward the outpost walls.
By the time they arrived, Deputy Commander Feng Cang was already in position.
Zhong Baisheng swept his gaze across the dark mass in the distance and frowned deeply.
Feng Cang said in a grim tone, “We already cleared out every nearby demon settlement. For the demon clan to gather this many lesser demons, they must have mobilized them from elsewhere.”
Wang Xing’an sighed lightly. “There are many outposts on the third layer, so we can more or less anticipate any demon clan movements there. But our presence on the fourth layer is minimal.”
“We don’t know how the demons are mobilizing. That’s not your fault,” Feng Cang said seriously. “The other outposts have also sent word. They’ve been attacked by the demons as well.”
“The number of demons appearing so far isn’t large, but how many might show up later is completely unknown.”
“What do you three think? Do we stand and fight, or retreat?” Feng Cang asked, visibly worried.
He hadn’t expected that after such a brief period of calm, the demons of the fourth layer would suddenly launch such a massive offensive.
They dared to attack all outposts simultaneously!
Wang Xing’an frowned. “Where did so many demons come from?”
Zhong Baisheng spoke in a deep voice, “From what I know, the fourth layer belongs entirely to the Fifth Great Heavenly Demon.”
The territories of the ten Great Heavenly Demons were clearly divided.
The fourth layer was wholly under the Fifth Great Heavenly Demon’s domain.
As for the deeper layers, the Demon Suppression Guards knew little.
Feng Cang nodded. “Yes, the demons we’ve been fighting are almost all subordinates of the Fifth Great Heavenly Demon.”
“The previous Fifth Great Heavenly Demon died. After a new one inherited that position, many of the old subordinates switched allegiance to the Sixth Great Heavenly Demon.”
“So, when we fought against the remaining followers of the fifth, we weren’t under too much pressure.”
Hearing this, Shen Mo fell into thought.
Now he understood.
Logically, the fourth layer shouldn’t have had this many demons.
Yet here they were in overwhelming numbers.
That could only mean one thing—
These demons had come from deeper layers.
And they had been planning this for a long time.
They had only been waiting for the right moment.
There had to be cooperation from other Great Heavenly Demons involved.
After all, hiding your troops in deeper layers meant stashing them on someone else’s territory.
That added considerable risk.
Zhong Baisheng, trusted deeply by Zhang Longxiang, quickly analyzed the situation and spoke decisively. “We have two options now.”
“First, we hold the line and observe how the situation develops. With our current strength, we can fend off this wave of demons for at least half a month.”
“Second, we join forces with the other outposts’ Demon Suppression Guards and retreat to the third layer, where we can regroup and recover.”
If they could hold the line, those demons were walking merit points.
Who wouldn’t want that?
Wang Xing’an didn’t have a strong opinion. He never liked thinking about strategies.
Since Zhong Baisheng laid it out, he wasn’t going to bother.
The two of them turned to Shen Mo.
He was also a proper commander—his input mattered.
Shen Mo said seriously, “Commander Zhong, if the demons have really been planning this for a long time, I fear they may target our retreat path.”
“If the passage between the third and fourth layers is cut off, we’ll be like a lone boat stranded in the sea—at risk of capsizing at any moment.”
Upon hearing this, Zhong Baisheng, Wang Xing’an, and Feng Cang all turned solemn.
Especially Feng Cang—he had initially thought this overly young commander wouldn’t contribute anything meaningful.
After all, Shen Mo had been promoted rapidly to commander thanks to his massive contribution in crafting the Flame Jiao Cloudship.
The other commanders had all earned their ranks through years of bloody battle and experience.
Frankly speaking, Shen Mo seemed like an empty title.
But what Shen Mo had just said instantly earned Feng Cang’s respect.
That was a sharp analysis!
He had hit the nail on the head!
Zhong Baisheng nodded with approval. “Commander Shen, your point is spot on. I overlooked that completely.”
“Whether we stay and fight should depend on the situation at the third-layer outposts.”
After a moment of thought, he turned to Wang Xing’an. “Old Wang, take some men and scout it out.”
“Make sure to bring back an accurate report on the third layer’s condition.”
“Got it,” Wang Xing’an replied. He picked a few trusted men and immediately dashed out of the outpost.
