Chapter 108: Chapter 108: The Plan Is Disrupted

This wasn’t the first time Wren Sutton had experienced Adrian Lancaster’s domineering and unreasonable nature.

She was in his car now, and if he didn’t want her to get out, there was no way she could.

In order to get out of the car, Wren chose to compromise. It was just a matter of a few words, after all. The sooner she said them, the sooner this would be over.

"First of all, I really didn’t stand you up at lunch on purpose. Something came up. It was a special situation, and it wasn’t convenient to call, so I didn’t get a chance to tell you."

Wren’s attitude was sincere, and the look on Adrian’s face softened slightly. "What was it? Be specific."

Wren told him the truth. "On the way to Xylos, at Kestrelroad East, I saw a little three-year-old girl standing on the side of the road, crying her heart out. I felt sorry for her, and there were no adults around, so I pulled over and got out to ask what was wrong."

"And then?"

"And then, I couldn’t get anything out of her. The little girl just shook her head and wouldn’t talk. I didn’t feel right leaving her there alone, so I called the police."

Adrian had probably guessed what came next. "You went to the station with them?"

"Because I was the one who reported it, and the case involved a three-year-old, I had to cooperate and give a statement. That’s why I never made it to Xylos."

So far, everything Wren had said was the absolute truth, without a single falsehood.

Most of Adrian’s anger dissipated.

He changed the subject. "Where is the little girl now?"

Wren already had her story prepared. Unflustered, she replied, "At the home of a female police officer named Foster."

"Her parents didn’t go to the station to pick her up?"

Wren shook her head. "They haven’t been able to contact her parents yet."

Adrian didn’t say anything more. The matter was considered closed.

Just as Wren breathed a sigh of relief... 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"What’s with all the bags? And why weren’t you driving?"

Wren was speechless. ’Does he really have to ask about every little thing?!’

"What, is it inconvenient to answer?" Adrian said sarcastically.

Wren suppressed her annoyance. "I bought the little girl a few changes of clothes. Officer Foster’s home is near the mall, so I parked my car downstairs from her place. I was on my way back after shopping when I unexpectedly ran into you on the street. You were there for the rest of it."

"From your tone, it sounds like you didn’t want to run into me," Adrian said, his voice heavy.

"..."

The atmosphere grew a little awkward.

Wren turned her head to look outside, avoiding Adrian’s deep, scorching gaze.

"I never said that. That’s your own interpretation. You can’t blame me."

She had been so focused on talking that she hadn’t noticed the driver had already driven far out of the city and was now heading toward the airport.

"Why are we going to the airport?" Wren asked anxiously.

Adrian didn’t hide it. "I’m going to Jadeport to visit an old superior. You’re coming with me."

The color drained from Wren’s face, and she refused flatly. "No, I can’t go with you. Have the driver turn around right now."

’If I leave Aston, what will happen to Zoey? Besides, I have important things to do tomorrow.’

Adrian’s expression changed too, turning dark and displeased. "Why can’t you go?"

Wren had a solid reason and stated it with conviction. "Tomorrow is the Quinn family’s youngest son’s full moon celebration. Grandma specifically told me to go to the Quinn family’s banquet with you. How could you forget something so important?"

"The Quinn Family?"

"Yes, Grandma’s best friend, Old Mrs. Quinn."

Adrian was, of course, aware of the relationship between the Lancaster and Quinn families, but he didn’t know about the full moon banquet. No one had informed him.

His plans disrupted, he blamed Wren indiscriminately. "Why are you only telling me this now?"

Wren seethed with anger. "Excuse me? Don’t go blaming an innocent person. I texted you about it a while ago."

"I never got it," Adrian said, as if he were completely in the right.

"..."

To prove her point, Wren immediately took out her phone, found the sent message, and shoved it in front of Adrian’s face.

"See for yourself. Did I or did I not tell you in advance?"

With the evidence right in front of him, Adrian had no rebuttal. His brow furrowed, and after a long pause, he squeezed out, "For something this important, why didn’t you just call me?"

In the end, he was still blaming Wren.

Wren remained composed. "Now is not the time to be assigning blame to me. Instead, you should be investigating who deleted the message from your phone."

The look in Adrian’s eyes deepened.

’The day Wren sent that message, during that time frame, I was at the Marshall family’s home,’ he thought. ’Could it have been Maya Marshall?’

"It’s actually quite easy to guess," Wren prompted. "Just think about who it could have been based on the timing."

Adrian didn’t respond, his expression inscrutable.

’If it really was Maya, what was her motive? Did she not want me to accompany Wren to the Quinn family’s home?’

After a moment of contemplation, Adrian said nothing more about the deleted message.

"This old superior in Jadeport... I absolutely must visit him. The progress of the Dreamtide Bay Resort project depends on it."

Wren guessed it might be related to the bidding conference, but she didn’t ask any further.

"Then the Quinn family’s full moon banquet..."

"You’ll go by yourself tomorrow," Adrian decided after careful consideration.

"I’ll make a separate trip to the Quinn family’s home when I get back from Jadeport."

Wren had no objection. The two had reached an agreement.

Adrian glanced down at her foot. "Are you sure it won’t affect your walking?"

Wren moved her ankle slightly. It didn’t hurt much anymore. It seemed the medicine she had applied earlier was working remarkably well.

"It won’t."

Adrian looked away and instructed, "Since you sprained your ankle today, it’s best if you don’t wear high heels to the Quinns’ tomorrow."

Wren appreciated his concern. "I know."

The driver took Adrian to the airport, where Kevin Dawson had been waiting for some time at the designated entrance.

Wren watched them walk inside, putting on a show of waving. Once they were completely out of sight, she got back in the car.

"Young Madam, where to now?" the driver asked respectfully.

Wren was calm and composed. "Amberwood Estates. I’m going to deliver the children’s clothes and toys I bought to Officer Foster’s home."

"Very good, Young Madam." The driver pulled away from the airport.

Wren leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes to rest, her thoughts on Zoey. She wondered if her daughter was scared or crying, all alone at home.

The more Wren thought about it, the more anxious she became, wishing the car had magic and could transport her home in an instant.

"Could you drive a little faster?" she opened her eyes and urged the driver. "I have other things to attend to."

"Yes, Young Madam." While ensuring their safety, the driver skillfully increased their speed.

「...」

Zoey was in the living room watching cartoons, hugging a cloth doll. She sat obediently on the sofa, a graceful little lady.

From time to time, she would turn her head to glance at the clock on the wall, hoping Wren would come home soon.

Just as she was waiting in a state of extreme anxiety, the doorbell rang.

Zoey’s eyes lit up. Thinking it was Wren, she happily jumped off the sofa and ran to the door.

But when she looked at the video doorbell screen, it wasn’t Wren she saw, but a tall, handsome man.
