Chapter 221: An Ominous Feeling

As soon as she opened the door, Su Yijia saw Gao Huabin, wearing a raincoat, walking in from outside. His eyes gleamed with excitement, clearly having just returned from some mischievous activity.

Gao Huabin approached her and whispered, "Sister-in-law, I’ve finished bagging him up."

"You didn’t call me for something like this?" Su Yijia couldn’t believe it and murmured a bit resentfully.

The incident with Xia Pengzhan yesterday had disgusted her thoroughly. How could she let go of her anger without personally giving him a good beating?

"The rain was too heavy, and the boss said you definitely wouldn’t like getting soaked. Besides, it’s too cold to take a bath in this weather, and the boss was worried you’d catch a cold," Gao Huabin explained, scratching his head in embarrassment.

"True, Kaize does care about me," Su Yijia’s slight displeasure was instantly soothed by her husband’s thoughtfulness. But she still couldn’t help asking, "How badly did you beat him up? Can I give him another go before we leave?"

"Uh... that’s not possible. He’s barely hanging on, with all his limbs broken," Gao Huabin said apologetically.

It wasn’t entirely his fault for being too rough. The boss had instructed him to add both his and his sister-in-law’s share of the beating, which resulted in him going overboard.

Su Yijia gave Gao Huabin a meaningful look but didn’t press the matter further. Since Xia Pengzhan was already in such a state, she couldn’t very well go and take his life.

Taking the umbrella Gao Huabin handed her, Su Yijia went to Qin Kaize’s room. Her grandparents and the two guards were in the room, but Xia Weiguo was nowhere to be seen.

"Where’s Uncle Xia?" Su Yijia asked curiously.

"The leader went to the county to make a phone call," Gao Huabin replied as he took off his raincoat and swept the water off the floor. Then he excitedly said, "Sister-in-law, your body restoration ointment is amazing! My leg used to hurt so much on rainy days that I couldn’t even stand, but now there’s no pain at all, and it’s even more flexible than before."

"I’ve told you before, it’ll make you better than ever," Su Yijia said, puzzled as to why he seemed so surprised when she had mentioned this many times.

It wasn’t entirely Gao Huabin’s fault for not taking her words seriously. Hearing about the effects and experiencing them were fundamentally different. Especially when the improvement Su Yijia described far exceeded human imagination. He felt as light as a feather now.

Once the boss recovered, he planned to take the team’s test with him, so they could both return to the team together.

"Jiajia, come and eat some buns," Grandma Lin called out to Su Yijia. She had borrowed the steamer and made some pickled vegetable buns in the morning. The spicy, savory buns were just as good as meat buns, especially paired with hot milk. Life felt incredibly comfortable.

Qin Kaize had porridge for breakfast, which Grandma Lin had cooked with the caterpillar fungus and some leftover chicken from the previous day.

Hearing noises outside, Su Yijia stood by the window with her bun, watching the educated youths busy scooping water out of the courtyard. The Educated Youth Center, surrounded on all sides, couldn’t drain rainwater quickly enough, unlike the larger outside areas where water could flow into the river.

"It’s already past eight. Aren’t they going to work?" Su Yijia asked curiously.

"It’s raining so heavily that they can’t go to work. Usually, in such weather, they rest at home," Grandma Lin replied, recalling her time working on the farm and how she eagerly awaited rainy days for a bit of respite.

"Comrade Su! Comrade Su!" The village chief’s wife appeared outside the Educated Youth Center, drenched and holding an umbrella.

Su Yijia was surprised. The rain was pouring down; she couldn’t possibly be thinking of going to neighboring villages to collect mushrooms, could she?

Pushing aside her suspicions, Su Yijia grabbed an umbrella from the wall and went out to meet her.

"Mrs. Chen, why did you come over in such heavy rain? The road isn’t easy to walk on. How about we wait until the weather clears up before going?" Su Yijia asked.

"Yes, we should wait until it clears up. I was just worried you might be anxious, so I came to let you know," the village chief’s wife quickly agreed.

"Since you’re here, Auntie, why don’t you come in for some hot tea and wait until the rain lets up a bit before heading back?" Su Yijia offered.

The village chief’s wife waved her hand, "No, no, the rain is too heavy. I need to get back to keep an eye on the chicken coop and pigsty. I can’t let them catch a cold."

With that, she hurriedly left, disappearing into the rain. As her figure vanished, a few bright flashes streaked across the sky, illuminating the gloomy world. The sky seemed to split open, and rain poured down as if the Milky Way had spilled.

Su Yijia lifted her umbrella slightly, staring at the torrential downpour. An inexplicable sense of unease gnawed at her, as if something bad was about to happen. However, 666 hadn’t alerted her to any impending danger.

Returning to the room, Su Yijia stir-fried the snails she’d soaked the previous day. While enjoying the snails and listening to the storytelling on the radio, she kept an eye on the rain. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Suddenly, 666’s urgent voice interrupted her thoughts.

"Host, there’s danger! Danger is approaching!"

Su Yijia’s face paled as she looked at the others. They, too, had noticed the change in atmosphere.

"Sister-in-law, do you feel a bad premonition?" Gao Huabin asked.

"Yes. I think we should be cautious and prepare for the worst," Su Yijia responded, moving to the window. The window was still covered with thick paper. To see outside, she had to peel it back, but doing so would reveal the inside of the house to anyone outside. Taking a small knife from Gao Huabin, she carefully made a discreet slit in the paper.

Half-squatting beneath the window, she cautiously peered outside. The other two guards braved the rain, stepping out with their weapons. As they passed Gao Huabin, they handed him a weapon as well.

"Sister-in-law, stay behind me. I’ll protect you," Gao Huabin said, positioning himself defensively.

"I have a weapon too," Su Yijia replied, rolling up her sleeve to show him the bracelet on her wrist. She was about to explain its purpose when gunshots rang out outside.

Gao Huabin immediately darted to the window, and Su Yijia made room for him. Both crouched low, watching the scene unfold outside.

The continuous sound of gunfire stirred up the Educated Youth Center. From the noises, it was clear the others were scrambling inside their rooms, though no one dared to come out. At least they had the sense to value their lives. Rushing out to investigate the commotion would be a foolish move, akin to suicidal curiosity.
