Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 188: The Highly Perilous Trio of Grandmother and Grandchildren
"Why wouldn’t you need to spend money? There are so many places where it could be used! In the future, when Kaize and I have children, won’t you need to buy candies and toys for your great-grandchildren? You must take it, this is my filial gift to you, you can’t refuse my heartfelt intentions," Su Yijia refused to touch the bag again and, after speaking, returned to Qin Kaize’s side.
Although her grandparents were brought back, they had been in the countryside for so many years, barely having enough food to eat. They couldn’t afford anything, even their pockets combined probably only held ten yuan. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
Despite the appearance of five thousand yuan being somewhat excessive, it was still within her means.
Grandma Lin, with teary eyes, shook her head.
"I’ll keep the money for you. If you need it, come to Grandma," Grandma Lin responded with a smile.
However, Su Yijia leaned over and said, "The money is a filial gift for you and Grandpa. Spend it however you want, don’t save it for me. If I run out of money, I have my husband."
She then extended her hand and playfully patted Qin Kaize’s shoulder, with a forceful motion that could have dislocated it.
Qin Kaize laughed and agreed.
Grandma Lin found herself helpless with her granddaughter. Finally, she could only look at Qin Kaize with a wry smile.
"Kaize, our Yijia is just a little mischievous monkey. Don’t spoil her too much," Grandma Lin said.
Qin Kaize blinked, and the warmth and indulgence in his eyes increased. Grandma Lin knew that her grandson-in-law adored Yijia, so she didn’t say much more and nudged Grandpa Lin towards the kitchen.
"You make lunch, and I’ll sew some clothes."
When she came out, it was over forty minutes later. She was still wearing the same outfit, but Grandpa Lin had changed his clothes. It seemed like nothing special, but Su Yijia knew that they must have sewn the money into the clothing they were wearing.
Nowadays, elderly people were hesitant to leave their money in the bank, feeling it was insecure. They preferred keeping their money close at hand.
Su Yijia remembered her father from her previous world mentioning that when he was young and involved in business, he would dismantle the doors at home. He’d cut a slit at the bottom, roll up money in a plastic bag, stuff it inside, and cover it with a wooden strip. Even the doors of the toilets were not spared during those initial business years when they were allocated a two-bedroom flat.
Her father engaged in business like this seven or eight years later than she was now. So, Su Yijia saw nothing wrong with Grandma Lin’s approach. As long as the elderly were happy, it was all that mattered.
This meal is prepared, and Gao Huabin also returned with Zhu Zirui after taking a nap of about forty minutes after lunch. Finally, they all got into the car and headed to the train station.
This time, there were quite a few people traveling together. Apart from Qin Kaize, Su Yijia, and her grandparents, there were Gao Huabin, Xia Weiguo, and his two security guards, totaling eight people. The two security guards were replaced and were not familiar faces.
Xia Weiguo explained that he was not comfortable entrusting the investigation of Yin Linjiang’s case to others, so he chose to let his trusted personnel stay. While the explanation might be genuine, the new pair of security guards seemed more professional based on their demeanor, walking pace, and even breathing.
Nonetheless, Su Yijia believed that, when traveling and heading to a potentially dangerous place like Yun Province, being cautious was crucial. So, she didn’t dwell much on it.
They resided in the city center of Hu City and reached the train station within ten minutes by car. Xia Weiguo had bought sleeper tickets for all of them, which were in the same car. Although Hu City wasn’t the originating station, obtaining sleeping car tickets was quite challenging, as they were not only expensive but also required identification documents to purchase.
Upon boarding the train, the sleeping carriages were empty. Su Yijia took a small radio with her when leaving the house.
They could have a good time sitting together to listen to the story and nibble on the snacks Zhu Zirui had thoughtfully brought along – peanuts and melon seeds. The day was indeed quite leisurely.
It wasn’t until dinner when an elderly lady arrived with a girl under twenty and a boy about six or seven years old. The older woman seemed momentarily surprised but soon greeted them with a smile. However, they merely nodded politely and didn’t engage further with the family.
Dinner was a delicious round of dumplings. Each person had a full lunchbox, although the dumplings had cooled down, their scent of savory meat wafted out upon opening them. Especially when all eight of them gathered around to eat, paired with the vinegar Su Yijia had put into a soy sauce bottle, the aroma was particularly appetizing.
The older lady and the girl in her twenties managed to control themselves, but the six or seven-year-old boy could not resist.
"Granny! I want to eat dumplings!" He banged on the table, making a fuss and noise.
Su Yijia furrowed her brow, finding the noise painful to her eardrums. She thought someone among them would pacify the child, perhaps Xia Weiguo or Gao Huabin, but even her grandparents seemed indifferent.
Grandma Lin even placed a peeled braised egg into Su Yijia’s bowl. "Yijia, focus on eating. Look at how thin you are, just a little skeleton," she reminded softly.
The enjoyment of a meal often relied on the ambiance. Interrupted while relishing a meal, even the most delicious food lost its appeal.
"Grandma, have something to eat too." Su Yijia took a big bite of the braised egg and felt her appetite improved. However, the endless crying still echoed in her ears, making her feel a little restless. When she set out from home, she deliberately brought a can of malted milk and powdered milk, intending to make two cups for Qin Kaize every day. If the little child continued crying without leaving, wouldn’t the crying go on forever? The old lady sat there for a while and, seeing that no one took the initiative to give her grandson something to eat, had to reluctantly kick the young girl’s leg secretly. The girl frowned. Reluctantly, she stood up and went to where Su Yijia and the others were sitting.
"Hi, my brother is being too noisy. Can I trouble you to give him two dumplings? He has a small stomach, so two will be enough," she said softly, feeling quite embarrassed, her face turning red.
Just as Gao Huabin was about to refuse, Su Yijia agreed, saying, "Sure."
She took the lunchbox from the girl’s hand and generously put in ten dumplings. This surprised everyone. Among them, anyone might be soft-hearted, but Su Yijia didn’t seem like someone who would condone such behavior. Su Yijia wrote a series of words on the notebook placed on the table and let everyone read it.
"They have a mixed herbal scent on them, not easy to deal with. It’s better to avoid trouble than to invite it."
As someone who dealt with medicine, she had smelled dozens of herbal scents, but the herbal scent on the little girl’s body was evidently more complex. Not only did she not get the scent mixed into herself while distilling, but even the father and son in the traditional Chinese medicine store, who had been around herbs since childhood, didn’t have such a strong scent. Therefore, this little girl could only have been soaked in medicinal water from a young age, or she boarded the train after being soaked in it.
She seemed perfectly healthy, why would she be soaked in medicinal water?
