Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 160: Both the Su and the Lin Families were in Prison
"Alright, I’ll give you a thousand, and you guys can continue collecting in the village. But you’ll have to wait until I return from out of town before picking up the goods," Su Yijia, concerned about them collecting too much in her absence, deliberately emphasized the timing.
Xu Li’an calculated and felt that a thousand wouldn’t cover much, but he agreed, nonetheless.
"Alright! I’ll collect and keep it at home until you’re back."
Su Yijia felt that everything that needed to be discussed had been covered. She stood up and bid farewell to the people at the Xu family. Li’an accompanied her and walked her to the door before she suddenly stopped. She took out another two thousand from her bag and handed it to Xu Li’an.
"I’ve thought it over. I still think a thousand won’t be enough. Three thousand should be more suitable. You can start by collecting peanuts—however much there is, collect it all. Once that’s done, then collect soybeans and corn," Su Yijia felt that three thousand wouldn’t be quite enough for the collection. But in the vicinity of Hu City, there were only about a dozen villages, and a few hundred for each village was already quite a lot. If they were to entirely acquire these, they’d need at least eight hundred for each village.
Not that it was to avoid standing out, but more so to prevent others from assuming they’d made a lot of money and could easily collect however much was offered. Envy was the most fearsome of emotions. So, collecting less would make those people understand that they also had financial constraints. This strategy seemed to be the safest.
Consequently, making the most oil out of the limited funds from peanuts became more crucial. Su Yijia explained her thoughts and concerns to Xu Li’an. Once she was sure he understood her worries and intentions, she strolled leisurely across the street and returned home.
Upon pushing the door open, she saw Ke Zeming sitting in the yard.
"You’re here? Is your unit not busy?" Su Yijia was surprised.
"Sister-in-law, it’s because of official business. Last time, the prescription for Functional Restoration Elixir that I took from you was handed to Uncle Xia, submitted by Uncle Xia. I’m in a similar position to Kaize, and I’m not as influential as Uncle Xia. He has always treated Kaize as his own son, so he’d oversee this matter the best." Ke Zeming quickly explained.
Su Yijia was taken aback by his explanation; she hadn’t expected him to act this way. The last time he had sought the prescription too directly, which made Su Yijia a bit uncomfortable, thinking he was overly eager for quick gains. Yet, he later arranged things so meticulously, all for her benefit.
"So, you handed the prescription to Uncle Xia, and you’re not directly involved in this anymore?" Su Yijia asked, somewhat puzzled. She couldn’t quite believe that Ke Zeming was someone who didn’t care about gains and losses. Since she first knew him, he had done things that were rather aggravating.
"It’s not entirely unrelated. I’m in possession of the prescription. The military hospital is better and has more people available for testing. That’s why the data has been sent to me for verification during this time before being delivered to Uncle Xia," Ke Zeming lightly smiled.
"Well, it’s been quite taxing for you," Su Yijia chuckled wryly. It seemed she might have overthought things in the past; Ke Zeming was simply a straightforward, unbending person. That’s why he was more suitable for surviving in the unit. Most people there weren’t bad-minded and were honest. Otherwise, if they were out there, it wouldn’t take long before someone would get them into serious trouble.
"I’m not the one having a hard time; Uncle Xia is. You don’t know those people in authority; they’re so afraid to be slightly generous, thinking others will become proud." Their way of giving awards was just like squeezing toothpaste, and thinking of that, Ke Zeming lamented with a hint of disdain.
Did they realize how difficult it was for his sister-in-law to gain such honors? Those people, even if they didn’t consider how valuable the prescription was, should consider how hard it was for her, a woman, to take care of his boss.
With higher honors, there would be fewer people who dare to bully her when they weren’t watching. Even though they were all in Hu City, they often went on missions. Their other teammates who retired would gradually have their own families. There would always be things they couldn’t take care of in time. So they had to protect her more and find ways to help her rise.
Besides, this prescription was life-saving. Did they consider the honor more important than their lives in those people’s eyes?
"Yijia, don’t listen to Ke’s rambling. Rest assured, I will definitely get you the honor you deserve," Xia Weiguo promised, his commitment unwavering. Finally, he glared at Ke Zeming.
None of them were trouble-free individuals. Bringing up anything bothersome to Yijia was utterly unnecessary. If they couldn’t even handle such simple matters, what were they, these grown-up men, supposed to do?
"Thank you, Uncle Xia," Su Yijia said with a small, gentle smile. Though the curve of her lips was small, she felt genuinely content. She had encountered many unpleasant individuals, yet she had still garnered genuine care from those around her. Even if a large part of it was because of Qin Kaize, she didn’t mind at all. Their lives were bound together by fate. She was grateful for the heartfelt support from these people, which was rightfully hers. Even Qin Kaize belonged to her.
"By the way, sister-in-law, I have good news to tell you. You’ll definitely be happy when you know," Ke Zeming suddenly brightened his eyes, sounding mysterious.
"What?" Su Yijia was a bit puzzled by his attitude.
"The people from the Su and Lin families who used your mother’s money to buy their jobs back then have been arrested. Su Jianshe and Lin Cuifen suddenly confessed that they had conspired together initially. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have taken the money and distributed it between the two families to buy the jobs."
"Can the investigators really trust this sudden confession?" Su Yijia didn’t appear shocked but rather concerned.
Ke Zeming nodded. "Of course, they believe it. They specifically checked that when they bought the jobs twenty years ago, it was stated that Su Jianshe and Lin Cuifen took the money. At that time, the jobs were sold for two hundred yuan each, so when they took out so much money at once, no one believed they were unaware."
"So, how long will they be sentenced?" Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin couldn’t contain their excitement and hastily inquired.
"Seven years. It’s a pretty serious case. But since the others were accomplices, they were sentenced accordingly," Ke Zeming concluded, squinting a bit suspiciously at Su Yijia. "Sister-in-law, why aren’t you surprised at all?"
"Why should I be surprised? Su Jianshe and Lin Cuifen were never good people. When it came down to the wire, how could they willingly share the good but not bear the pain together?" Su Yijia shrugged, looking as if she had already foreseen everything.
More precisely, it wasn’t so much foresight as it was meticulously planned.
