Rosie's Games-Chapter 558: Confrontation 3
Meanwhile, when Lucas arrived in the north, the first person he saw was Belisarius. He sat inside his office, his face devoid of any expression.
"You came..." Belisarius said coldly.
"Why would I not?" Lucas asked, not hiding the sarcasm in his voice. The current Belisarius looked as if he had been in a war, his appearance disheveled, his face pale.
He looked exhausted.
"Will you answer my question?" Belisarius asked.
"Have you thought about how we met?" Lucas approached the bar, poured wine for both of them and handed a glass to Belisarius before sitting opposite his friend.
"You saved me," Belisarius said, downing the glass of wine. "Does that mean I owe you a life?"
"You know you could never defeat me," Lucas said. "I gave you another chance at life, and I won't take that away." Lucas understood what Belisarius truly desired.
Belisarius was someone who had lived for centuries. He was not exactly stupid. In fact, Belisarius was a very smart man.
Belisarius wanted Lucas to end his life.
When the goddess sacrificed herself, Belisarius did some things, sacrificed a few things to live forever. He paid a high price. Yet, in the end, he discovered that the one he had been waiting for all this time would never come.
"Or you can return to where you came from and wait for her," Lucas suggested, leaning back. "The universe is vast. You have a thousand years ahead of you."
Belisarius sighed. He then got up, and grabbed the wine bottle from the bar, downing it in one go.
"You know it wouldn't work on you," Lucas remarked. Alcohol no longer affected them.
"You are entertaining," Belisarius said. "And a hypocrite... you are an entertaining hypocrite."
Lucas raised an eyebrow at the change in Belisarius's demeanor.
"What made you think I wanted to end my life?" Belisarius turned toward him. Then he beamed. "How about I give you a third option..."
Lucas pursed his lips.
"How about you... give your life to me!" Belisarius hissed as he threw the wine bottle toward Lucas. What happened next was pure carnage.
Lucas did not shy away from fighting against a man who had just lost a loved one.
"How dare you..." Belisarius uttered. "How dare you kill her!"
He punched Lucas, but the latter simply avoided it. Belisarius always knew that Lucas was powerful.
Unlike Belisarius, Lucas was not born human. He was a demon prince—powerful enough to annihilate everyone on this continent.
At first, Belisarius believed that the goddess had indeed cursed Lucas and taken away his abilities. Now, Belisarius thought that he had simply trusted Lucas too much.
Belisarius found no reason for Lucas to lie to him. Why would he? Lucas loved the goddess too!
Lucas's story about the curse due to his greed was believable as he was a greedy demon.
Belisarius never doubted Lucas's claims, and for years, he stayed in the barrier, training people to become the goddess's soldiers. He waited for her to come back without knowing that she... she did not sacrifice herself. She was killed, and betrayed by someone like Lucas!
How could Belisarius let this go?
Belisarius glared at him, anger burning in his eyes. He raised his sword, ready to battle, but Lucas stood there, defenseless. Belisarius hesitated, confused by Lucas's lack of resistance.
Belisarius's anger boiled over as he swung his sword at Lucas with all his might. However, instead of defending himself, Lucas continued to dodge Belisarius's strikes effortlessly. This only fueled Belisarius's rage.
"Fight me!" Belisarius roared, attacking again and again. However, Lucas continued to evade his every move, his face showing no sign of aggression. Belisarius was determined to make Lucas pay for what he believed to be a betrayal.
Once more, Belisarius aimed a fatal blow at Lucas. This time, Lucas did not avoid it. Their swords clashed, and for a moment, it seemed like the end. But then Belisarius realized something. Lucas had let himself be struck.
Belisarius gritted his teeth. Lucas could have easily avoided that attack yet he stood there. Was he... was he underestimating Belisarius? Was he underestimating him!?
He could sense that Lucas was holding back, and it only made her more and more infuriated. The Lucas that he knew would never hold himself back!
He even betrayed the goddess, the woman that he loved. What was stopping him from killing Belisarius?
In the end, Lucas did not show any intention of fighting back. He would simply avoid his sword and look at him as if... as if he could read Belisarius's thoughts.
"I will not be the one that would end your life," Lucas uttered.
"You—"
"It is not something that I can give you," Lucas said. He and Belisarius were exact opposites.
While Lucas did not care about being labeled as the dark lord and the villain or the indifferent one who never cared about the humans, Belisarius always wanted to save them.
He was exactly like the goddess. However, unlike her, Belisarius did not resort to methods that required sacrificing the people he wanted to save the most.
He helped people, healed them, and supported them, but he never once thought of sacrificing them to make himself more powerful.
Instead, he waited patiently. He studied the universe and the craft of sorcery and magic.
Unlike the goddess, he truly wanted to save the humans.
However, his weakness was his heart.
He loved.
And he loved wholeheartedly.
He watched the goddess become who she was, always supporting her, always standing behind her. The goddess did not know this, but it was Belisarius who secretly helped her when she was on the verge of madness because of sorcery.
He loved her without asking for anything in return.
He simply loved.
Lucas couldn't help but laugh at the thought of it. Clearly, Belisarius was different from him.
And that was the reason why he wanted to give him a chance, a chance to live a different life.
A second chance at life.
A second chance at love.
