Chapter 42 -42: High-Priced Auction! (An extra chapter dedicated to my book club leader, there’ll be another one tonight)
“If this is all wire mesh, it should be worth a few thousand dollars.” Someone guessed.
“I bet there’s something else in there…”
“Who knows? If you want to make big money, you have to take risks!”
“If it’s less than two thousand, I’ll take it!”
“Actually, considering all these containers, this one is pretty good…”
Everyone was voicing their opinions.
Some people really thought so, Sean Knight figured some were just trying to mislead others.
Madden’s octuple telescope caught people’s attention and someone asked him:
“Mr. Madden, what do you see?”
“Not sure, seems there’s a tractor or something in there. Definitely something!”
Before people could get excited, Mr. Madden added another line:
“But whether the stuff inside is good or bad, who knows.”
Okay, that was like a cold shower.
Seeing that everyone had more or less finished inspecting, the auctioneer immediately started the auction:
“Starting price eight hundred dollars, each bid must be at least fifty dollars more, starting the auction now who will bid first will it be who will it be great, great, great, the young man from China Sean is the first to bid his offer is eight hundred and fifty dollars…”
The auctioneer once again demonstrated his unique intonation.
Before Sean’s hand even dropped, Mr. Madden raised his and bid:
“One thousand dollars!”
Soon, the price soared to three thousand dollars, and then the frequency of bids started to decrease.
By the time the bid reached five thousand five hundred dollars, only three people remained.
Mr. Madden suddenly raised the price to eight thousand dollars!
Sean was taken aback, Mr. Madden was ruthless!
But he also knew he must have this container this time!
“Nine thousand dollars!” Sean raised his bid by thousand dollars.
Another big-beard guy also continued his bid:
“Eleven thousand dollars!”
Mr. Madden made another high bid:
“Fifteen thousand dollars!”
Sean wondered if he’d guessed what was inside, but he wasn’t going to give in easily this time:
“Twenty thousand dollars!”
This bid scared off both the big-beard guy and Mr. Madden!
Mr. Madden looked at Sean seriously and shook his head, saying:
“You win, it’s yours!”
Sean smiled.
He knew Mr. Madden had understood his determination.

The old treasure hunter didn’t want to get into a destructive bidding war with Sean.
After the auctioneer announced the bid three times, he congratulated Sean on winning the auction.
Sean paid the money and started clearing up the stuff.
Jason Caldwell immediately came to help.
As he moved the stuff, he asked Sean:
“Sean, can we break even with these?”
Sean was still thinking about the other container with the sports car, so he casually answered:
“It depends on what we’ll unpack from here. Auctioning containers is basically gambling … ”
“Then why were you adamant about bidding on this container?”
Sean already knew the answer, so it was easy to deduce from the known to the unknown.
He pointed at these shelves and those wire meshes and asked Jason:
“What do you think these things are for?”
Jason paused his work, scratched his head, and said uncertainly:
“If I’m not mistaken, these should be… for a ranch? The wire mesh is probably for fencing livestock, and these iron frames should be for fixing wire meshes?”
“Exactly right!” Sean gave him a thumbs up, “Think about it, if all the back is filled with wire mesh, there must be at least five or six hundred rolls.
These wire meshes are all new, and on online, new ones cost fifty dollars a roll. Even if I calculate them as second-hand commodities at ninety percent of a new one, forty-five dollars per roll, isn’t it at least more than twenty thousand dollars?”
Jason Caldwell nodded, admiration evident on his expression.
Following Sean Knight was surely the right choice; he learned a new trick!
“Also, I don’t think it’s all iron wire mesh in here,” Sean Knight said as he moved stuff around inside the container. “Usually, they put something significant in these containers. Let me see…”
He climbed onto the mesh and peered inside, immediately feigning a look of utter astonishment.
“My God! Guess what I see? Good heavens!”
Jason, completely unprepared for Sean’s reaction, couldn’t resist climbing onto the mesh himself. After moving a couple of bundles aside, he saw what was inside.
“Wow! Oh, my God!”
Jason also let out a gasp of surprise.
His exclamations drew the attention of several people in the auction.
Someone yelled:
“Hey, what’s the deal, poor Jason? What did you see?”
Jason was unfazed by the name-calling and chuckled, “You’ll never guess in a million years!”
“Spit it out, don’t make me climb up there and kick your ass!” a man from the crowd yelled impatiently.
“It’s a helicopter!” Jason roared with laughter, “Sean’s hit the jackpot this time!”
Indeed, it was a small, single-person helicopter.
The reason Sean Knight bid for this container was because he saw this big machine!
Although Sean wasn’t all that certain about the price of helicopters, and this was clearly a very simple, small-scale, single-person model.
But still, it was a helicopter!
Even if it were cheap, it should cost more than a car, right?
This was why Sean Knight was insistently bidding on this container!
When the others discovered it was a helicopter inside, they were all flabbergasted.
“I’ve stopped envying Sean’s good luck,” shrugged Madden. “It’s just pointless!
Smiling, Sean Knight retorted, “Actually, I think you’re the lucky one. All you see is my wins. But what about the days I didn’t make a dime? I didn’t hear you say anything.”
“Alright, alright, you Chinese are all like this,” old Madden shook his head. “So, you plan on competing with me for the next container?”
“Depends on if there is anything good inside,” Sean’s reply was noncommittal.
He would not pass up an opportunity to make money willingly.
He made a phone call to Mr. John, who was thoroughly surprised. When he learned that Sean had spent 20,000 dollars to seal the deal, he burst into laughter, saying:
“Sean, you’re the best investment I’ve made in my lifetime! Okay, I’ll find a buyer for you. It’s ranch stuff; a lot of people want it!”
Sean Knight decided not to sort through the items and wait for the appraiser to give a quote.
He left Jason Caldwell to watch over the items and strolled over to continue his auctioning.
After bidding up the prices in two or three other containers to over 8,000 dollars and then giving up, it seemed to the others like Sean truly intended to bid on another one.
When the car concealed under a car cover appeared, Sean continued bidding so it wouldn’t look too conspicuous.
When the car finally emerged from the container, all eyes were on it!
“A sports car! Oh, my God!” Diana Smith identified the car type in a single glance, even though it was under a car cover.
“No idea what brand it is…” someone said, tiling their head to get a better look, but the cover bore no logo.
There was only the car, no toolboxes or parts boxes on either side.
If there had been a toolbox or a parts box, they may have been able to make some guesses.
Now, it was all up to luck.
“Could be a Toyota…” someone mumbled.
“Look at all the dust on that car cover; I don’t think it’s a luxury car…” another proposed.
“I think it will be a good car!” Sean Knight suddenly said, “it should at least be worth some money, right?”
Hearing Sean’s words, someone immediately speculated:
“How do you know?”
“Just a guess.” Sean Knight responded with a wide grin.
“Shh——!”
Obviously, not many people believed in Sean’s prediction.
The auction began!
