Road to be the Best Chess Player in the World!-Chapter 510: After the Game
"Devi, how many times do I have to tell you, don’t watch my game! Just focus on your tournament first!" Sheva sighed in exasperation as he was connected in a call with the three teenagers whom he taught in the last couple of weeks. "Why are you so fixated on watching my game, anyway? It is not like we didn’t really play against each other, right?"
"Yeah, that’s what we said, Brother Sheva!" Nayaka suddenly chimed in on the screen, having a solemn face that Sheva knew would backfire later. "You don’t know this, but she even watched the replay of your streaming! Honestly, I don’t know what is inside her mind right now, and—URGH!"
"Brother Nay, shut up!" Devi’s face was so flushed as she sent a powerful jab straight to Nayaka’s hips. "Cough! Anyway, you don’t need to worry about me, Brother Sheva! I swear, this will not affect my performance!" The angelic smile she showed was the contrast of the glare she sent to Nayaka, and the scene of the older boy rolling in pain on the ground added the comedic tone in it, enough to make Sheva chuckle.
"Scary..." Duta whispered lowly, yet still got caught in the call. The younger boy didn’t have any death wish, so he just stepped aside and let Devi do whatever she wanted.
"Well, if you said it like that..." Sheva finally nodded, albeit reluctantly. "However, that means you don’t have any reason to fail to achieve the target, okay? You even have free time watching my stream, so you should be very prepared for your own tournament, right?" The smile on his face was quite intimidating, enough to make the girl feel guilty as she avoided his gaze.
"Ahaha... Don’t worry, Brother Sheva! Everything is under control!" She boasted with a faux confidence.
Nayaka, who just recovered from the jab earlier, smiled gloatingly at the girl before joining the conversation again. "Anyway, how did you know that she watched your stream, Brother Sheva?" 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"How else? It should be Brother Bagas, right? He is the biggest tattletale in history!" Devi answered sourly.
Sheva couldn’t help but chuckle, glancing at the balcony where his best friend was still on a call with Sarah back home. Indeed, he knew this because of Bagas, and thinking about this, the title ’the biggest tattletale in history’ seemed to be suitable to describe his best friend. Of course, he wouldn’t say it out loud.
"Well, it doesn’t matter how I know this. Just know that I am still watching you guys." His tone was solemn with a hint of mysteriousness, enough to fool the two boys into believing him. Devi just clicked her tongue sarcastically, yet she didn’t say anything since she was the one who got caught in this mess. "So, anyway, how is your preparation? You will go in two days, right? Who else will be with you?" He asked a barrage of questions.
"Well, in terms of chess, we are ready more than ever." This time, it was Duta who gave a report. "Administrative-wise, everything is also ready. We will fly on Friday night, and with us are Master Susanto and Master Ervan. Well, their respective wife as well, but I honestly suspect they just want to join the fun and have a little holiday trip."
’Um? Master Susanto and Master Ervan?’ Sheva was taken aback slightly when he heard those names, selectively ignoring the last part where Duta voiced his suspicion. ’Is this tournament really that big to the point that Master Susanto needs to go?’ He frowned, slightly confused.
Well, this was a misunderstanding on his part. In Sheva’s mind, Susanto, as the best player in the country, wouldn’t have a lot of free time to accompany youngsters in this kind of tournament. If he had to, the man would probably only go for the Asian Junior Championship or even the World Junior Championship, definitely not the small tournament like this Asian School Chess Championship, where the highest rated player there was just 2250.
Sheva forgot, though, that the title ’the best player in the country’ had already changed hands into him, and now that people didn’t regard him as the best again, he should be more available for the chore tasks like accompanying youngsters like this.
As for Master Ervan... Well, Sheva didn’t know a lot about the person except that he was a respectable man and cared a lot about the country’s chess community. He was the federation’s go-to whenever they needed someone to accompany a team abroad, stating that he loved watching the youngsters emerge into the scene. For that, Sheva could respect the man’s dedication and love for this country.
"Well, it is good that they are willing to be your chaperone. Don’t hesitate to ask them anything, okay? They are a wallet thick of experience, don’t let them go so easily!" Sheva reminded the three teenagers. "Also, listen to what they said, and don’t go wandering around alone. Check the internet for the most essential things you have to bring before going. It would be embarrassing if you somehow failed because you cannot adapt with the environment, right?"
"Yeah, we know, we know! Brother Sheva, I don’t know that you are so nagging like this!" Nayaka chuckled mockingly.
"Yes, Brother Sheva. You are even worse than my mom." Duta added the insult out of nowhere.
Honestly, Sheva should be offended by this remark, as he had already met Duta’s mother in the past. The woman was so overprotective for Duta, to the point that she wouldn’t allow him to go out with the other players. Compared to that, Sheva was far from reaching that point, and it was uncalled for for Duta to point that out to him.
However, Sheva couldn’t bring himself to get mad at them. After all, he knew that this was they way to joke, and this was also their way to tell that they were comfortable enough around him. So, in the end, Sheva just let out a small chuckle and said, "Well, if you are that confident, I will wait for you guys to come home with a victory!"
"You too, Brother Sheva!" Devi suddenly popped into the screen again, this time hogging the phone for herself. "I want to see the trophy later, so don’t you dare lose against anyone else there!"
