Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Assistant Yao’s Decision

"Boss, the apartment opposite the one the caretaker of your building lives in is actually empty. I checked the situation of the entire building when the renovations were underway last month and that apartment hadn’t been sold yet.

My mother and I can move there. After all, it’s not like we need to spend money now." Assistant Yao proved himself to be very thorough with that statement.

He had even investigated who lived in which apartment just for a renovation. It was refreshing.

Lu Zhen knew that his assistant could be a stubborn person too when he made up his mind so instead of arguing with him over where to live and what team to join, he just decided to let the guy stay close to him.

"You can move in whenever you want, I doubt anyone will bother stopping you. Do you need help with the move? After all, it’s a little dangerous now traveling with elders who haven’t learnt how to defend themselves yet." Lu Zhen asked after approving of his assistant’s decision to move into their building.

"Yes, I could use some help. Even though theft and murder have not become too popular yet, I have seen the rising trend of people breaking into other people’s houses to steal and sometimes when the owner fights back, they do not hesitate to kill.

I am worried about my mother. Leaving her alone for a short while is okay. But I am afraid someone will play the sympathy card and trick her into opening the door when I am away.

My mother hasn’t been out since the apocalypse began and still doesn’t understand that the world has changed drastically. A simple sob story could soften her heart and I am worried about that." Yao explained his worries to his boss hoping that he could get some advice.

And the advice he wanted so badly, he got.

"You should take Auntie out on a supply run and let her confront both zombies and other survivors face-to-face. Hiding her at home is only feeding her ignorance of how the world has changed. You are not protecting her, you are endangering her life.

If she doesn’t witness everything with her own eyes and just keeps hearing you say that things had changed and that you can’t be as generous and as welcoming as before, she might just think that you have become petty.

She would never take your words seriously. Take her out to a place where you know you will meet both zombies and survivors. Make sure an argument, or a fight breaks out with the survivors. If possible, get hurt. Fight and kill zombies too and let her see how close you come to getting bitten or scratched and infected.

Let’s see if she feels sorry for her own son who has to use his life to fight for the little supplies he brings back or the strangers who pretend to be pitiful to gain something out of nothing.

Since auntie is an emotional and sentimental person, you have to learn how to deal with her." Lu Zhen felt that the advice he gave to his assistant was the best.

It wasn’t manipulation, it was strategic. Since the people coming to see his mother and asking for things used emotions to blackmail her, he should learn from them and do the same. As a mother, auntie Zhao would definitely choose to protect his son.

"Thank you boss, I knew coming to you was the best decision. I had not thought of using such a method to enlighten my mother because I was worried that her heart can’t take the chaos and violence going on outside. But now I realize that if she doesn’t experience it first-hand, she would never understand the struggle humans are facing at the moment and how scarce resources would be in the future." Assistant Yao had indeed not thought of putting his mother through the shock of watching humans get torn apart by zombies or seeing her son get beaten up by others for supplies.

However, he felt that his boss made sense. The only way to cut the gordian knot was to let her experience everything herself. In fact, he planned to take his boss’ advice and get himself injured pretty badly. Of course, he would not let his injuries go further than flesh wounds but they have to be bad enough to make his mother’s heart ache.

Lu Tao listened to the two men from the side and wondered whether when his brother got injured that day was a strategic move or it was genuine. He couldn’t tell because in his eyes, even with supervision, the circumstances of the injuries had been unquestionable.

He could say that it had been a genuine injury, but now listening to his brother educate his employee about how to trick his mother, he started to doubt his eyesight.

The elevator stopped on the ground floor and opened then the three men walked out each pushing a shopping cart.

"Good afternoon, Madam." Assistant Yao greeted Leng Pan when he saw her.

Leng Pan had not expected such a guest, thus, she was taken aback when she heard the greeting. However, she recovered quickly and replied.

"Good afternoon, assistant Yao. Were you waiting for us upstairs when we came back?" Leng Pan asked, first out of curiosity and second, to make conversation.

"Yes, I came about 10:00 am and was told by a middle-aged man that you had left earlier. I thought I would have to wait for a whole day, I didn’t expect that the boss would return earlier than expected." Assistant Yao explained while following his boss and his boss’ brother to fill their cart with clothes.

"It’s good that we decided to go straight to the place we had planned and came back right away, otherwise you would have had to wait." Leng Pan commented after hearing that assistant Yao had already been waiting for over two hours.
