Chapter 327
When Joshua returned to the waiting room, Cain and Icarus were waiting for him, just as he had expected.
โIt was a great fight, Master,โ Icarus said.
โHm.โ Joshua nodded.
โWe only have a group battle left,โ Icarus continued. She glanced behind Joshua.
Cazes seemed to feel her eyes and came forward and bowed.
โItโs an honor to meet you,โ he said to her. โIโm Cazes Marahas, the subordinate of Captain Sanders.โ
โYo-youโre too polite,โ came Icarusโs surprised reply, hastily followed by a bow in return.
Just like Icarus said, Cazes was definitely too polite in some ways. A knight was considered the equal of a baronet. On top of that, the Imperial Knights, the highest knights in the Empire, were practically the same rank as barons, placing them above baronets. Despite all that, he was the first one to bow at Icarus, who was basically a commonerโฆ
Cazes smiled lightly. โYouโre Icarus-nim, arenโt you? I heard a lot about you. I feel like the moment the Captain happily talked about how he recruited a great strategist was yesterdayโฆ but three years have already passed since then.โ
โMa-master talked about me?โ Icarus raised her head upon hearing an unexpected story, her eyes filled with curiosity. โWhat did he sayโฆ?โ
Cazesโs smile deepened
โHe said that his strategist was very talented and was able to see the bigger picture in detail,โ he kindly explained, as if he were speaking to his sister.
Icarus eagerly waited on his every word, but no matter how long she waited, Cazes didnโt say anything else.
โIs that all?โ she asked, unable to hide her disappointment.
โPardon?โ Cazes tilted his head.
โWell, uhโฆ Did he talk about any other characteristicsโฆ?โ Icarus was flustered for some reason.
Cazes noticed and smiled knowingly.
โThere is one natural-born swordsman in a hundred, but there is only one natural-born strategist in a ten thousand, so that title alone is extraordinary.โ
โYo-youโre right. I must have put you on the spot with my useless questionโฆโ Icarus timidly said.
โAndโฆโ Cazes continued, stepping closer so he could whisper to her, โYouโre more beautiful than most women of the Empire, but you pretended to be a man, although you were really bad at it. So he was quite impressedโฆโ
โWait!โ Icarusโs eyes widened. She instinctively turned her head to look at Cain.
โWhat?โ Cain asked, tilting his head in confusion. โDo you have anything to say to me?
โNo-no.โ When Icarus saw Cainโs reaction, she repeatedly shook her head and turned back to Cazes. โHow in the worldโฆ?โ
โWhy donโt you two stop whispering between yourselves now?โ Cain finally got fed up and decided that it was the right time to interrupt the two. โDo you two know each other?โ
โWe donโt!โ Icarus yelled with a reddened face.
โYou can just say no. Why are you yellingโฆ?โ Cain turned his head to look at Cazes.โHey, why donโt we introduce ourselves?
โYouโre the Black Lion Cain de Harry, am I correct?โ Cazes smiled.
โDo you know me?โ Cain tilted his head in confusion.
Cazes shrugged. โWho wouldnโt know the Superhuman that is famous all around the continent?โ
โWoah?โ Cain exclaimed.
โOn top of that, Iโve heard a lot about you, although itโs my first time meeting you.โ Cazes chuckled.
โYou mean you heard a lot from my master, right?โ
โYes,โ Cazes said, nodding, โthatโs correct.โ
That was when Cain loosened up a bit.
โI was also quite touched when I watched the battle just now,โ Cain complimented Cazes. โAlthough so many powerful figures were watching your fight, you had the guts to speak up with confidence.โ
โItโs nothing compared to your accomplishments, Sir Cain.โ
Feeling the confidence rising inside him, Cain slightly raised his chin.
โYou know a thing or two, huh?โ
โEven a child knows that.โ Cazes shrugged.
โI feel like weโll get along greatโunlike someone.โ Cain glanced sideways.
Cazes noted where Cain was looking and smiled.
โItโs an honor you think of me that way.โ
โButโฆโ Cain said.
Cazes waited for Cain to finish speaking.
โI know Iโm being nosy, but are you married?โ
โHere he goes again.โ Icarus just shook her head because she wasnโt even surprised anymore.
โI also have two children,โ Cazes replied.
โOh, noโฆโ Cain smacked his lips as if he was truly sad to hear that, but he was secretly relieved. โWell, no one is perfect aside from my masterโฆโ
Cazes wasnโt sure what to say.
โThen are you living with your wife here in Arcadia?โ
A bitter smile spread across Cazesโs face.
โSheโs dead.โ
Cain and Icarusโs eyes widened.
โShe was born weak, and it happened shortly after she gave birth to our second childโฆ But I didnโt get to stay by her deathbed because I was away on a long business trip,โ Cazes bitterly explained.
โI-Iโm sorry for making you recall painful memoriesโฆโ Cain apologized.
Cazes shook his head. โDonโt worry. Itโs in the past.โ
โPhewโฆโ Icarus had been watching their conversation and ended up sighing. โWhy did you have to ask such a questionโฆ?โ
โHow about you?!โ Cain snapped.
โIโm not your honey[1], Sir Cain!โ
โYouโre the worst. How could you joke in a situation like this?โ Cain grumbled.
Icarus crossed her arms.
โCanโt you see our master agonizing over the upcoming group battle, Sir Cain?โ
โHuh?โ Cain turned to the aforementioned master, but Joshua just shrugged. Cain snorted. โAgonize, my ass.โ
โWhat?โ
โDo you think thatโs really the right word to describe our master? Since heโs been reinstated as the Captain of the Auxiliary Battalion of the Imperial Knights, itโs safe to say that heโs already won the group battle. Even if theyโre going up against the Imperial Knights, our master will be able to take out all of them alone in thirty minutes.โ
โBut still,โ Icarus insisted, but she couldnโt continue.
โIโll bet on twenty minutes,โ Cazes quietly said.
โThen Iโll bet on ten minutes!โ Cain shouted with a wide grin.
โThereโs nothing better than wagers to get closer to somebody,โ Cazes said with a little chuckle.
โShall we have a wager then?โ Cain suggested.
โYouโre on,โ Cazes said. โWhat will you bet?โ
โI happened to have ten gold right nowโฆ so Iโll bet all of it,โ Cain proclaimed, his grin stretching even wider.
โArenโt you a bit reckless with your money just because youโre single?โ Cazes joked.
โJust donโt change your mind later,โ Cain warned him. โIโm not going to let you off the hook even if you beg me to return the money later because you donโt have the money to buy snacks for your babies.โ
Icarus watched their conversation go on, dumbfounded.
โItโs not a simple matter!โ Icarus shrieked.
โโฆMy eardrums are going to blow out,โ Joshua mumbled.
โMaster!โ Icarus shouted.
โโฆHuh?โ Joshua flinched as he was dragged into the crossfire.
โYou know the other princes wonโt just stay still, right?โ Icarus growled with blazing eyes.
โWellโฆโ Joshua shrugged.
โTheyโll throw obstacles in our way by any means possible. Worst-case scenario, they might make your old colleagues fight against you.โ
โWhy do you care what happens to those traitors?โ Cain said dismissively.
โDo you still not understand our master?โ Icarus glared at Cain. โHe must have a different opinion.โ
Joshuaโs expression changed a bit, as if to affirm Icarusโs assertion.
Cain frowned. โNo way.โ
โCaptain.โ After Cain, Cazes came forward with a serious face. โThey didnโt make that choice because they wanted to.โ
โWhat are you talking about?โ Cain grumbled. โI know everyone does something for a reason, but their choices were surelyโโ
โMost of the current members of the Auxiliary Battalion are single,โ Cazes interrupted.
Cain flinched. โYou meanโฆ?โ
โYes, most of them are single or lost their partners. Half of the knights that left the Battalion have wives, children, and old parents, so they have mouths to feedโand those mouths wonโt be able to survive without the knights,โ Cazes bitterly continued. โIf anything happens to them, their families donโt have anyone to protect them, so their futures are obviousโโ (f)reenovelkiss
โArenโt most of the Imperial Knights from prestigious noble families?โ Icarus interjected. โHow bad can it beโ?โ
โMost of the knights in the Auxiliary Battalion used to be wanderers, so no one comes from the prestigious noble families that youโre talking about. They were mercenaries or free knights that deserted their families for personal reasons,โ Cazes explained.
โI didnโt know thatโฆโ Icarus trailed off into an awkward silence that weighed down on the room like a heavy blanket.
โHey, hey.โ Cain was unable to withstand the silence and thus quickly changed the topic. โBy the way, didnโt you forget something, Icarus?โ ๐ณ๐ซ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐ง๐จ๐๐ฒ๐ฅ.๐๐จ๐ฆ
โI forgot something?โ Icarus tilted her head in confusion.
โSince the man right before me is our real master, then what happened to the personโno, the bastard that was going to be our masterโs stand-in?โ
โOh, yeah!โ Icarus clapped after she finally recalled. โMaster, did you meet them, by the way?โ
โโThemโ?โ Joshua repeated.
โShe means your doppelganger and that fucking spear,โ Cain explained.
โโฆWhat?โ Joshua flinched and visibly stiffened. โHeโs here?โ
โโฆMaster?โ Cain was perplexed. Joshuaโs uncharacteristic nervousness contrasted worryingly with his usual unflappable composure.
โNo, no wayโฆโ Joshua mumbled.
Cain stayed silent.
โCain,โ Joshua called.
โYe-yes, sir?โ Cain replied.
โWhere did he go?โ
โAc-actuallyโฆโ Cain stuttered, โI asked because I also donโt knowโฆโ
Joshua shut his mouth and began to think. If Cain was right about him being here, then Joshua had an idea about his location, because there was only one location he would go to in the Avalon Empire.
โWe took different routesโno, he must have moved beforehand since he could sense me, thenโฆโ Joshua narrowed his eyes.
At that moment, someone loudly shouted from the outside of the waiting room, bringing Joshua back to reality.
โMr. Joshua Sanders! You have been ordered by the Emperor to come to the first-class seat of the colosseum before the group battle starts!โ
โIs itโฆ?โ Icarus tensed up when the event she had expected actually came true.
โWhy would he say it's an order from the Emperor when there isnโt one right now?โ Cain pouted.
โLetโs go.โ Joshua headed to the door without hesitation.
Cain hesitated for a moment.
โMaster, wouldnโt it be better to summon the other knights of the Auxiliary Battalion and say hiโฆ?!โ
โI think the same,โ Cazes chimed in. โTheyโll come running if you summon them right now. Since we donโt know what kind of schemes the princes are up to, it would be better to move after you meet the knightsโโ
โNo, I donโt have the time.โ Joshua even looked anxious, so Cazes no longer said anything. โCain.โ
โYes, master,โ Cain replied.
โIs it okay if I join in on the wager you guys talked about?โ Joshua asked out of the blue.
Cain gaped. โโฆPardon? When you talk about wager, you meanโฆ?โ
โOne minute,โ Joshua said.
Cain boggled at him.
โIโll make all the knights and other Captains that attack me kneel within a minute. If I win, I want you to do me a favor without complaining,โ Joshua told Cain.
Then he immediately exited the room.
Icarus, Cain, and Cazes gaped at the door that Joshua had gone through, dumbfounded.
โDid he say โone minuteโโฆ?โ they mumbled.
1. Itโsโฆ Korean wordplay. The raw was โ???โฆโ and โ? ?? ? ??? ??????โ ?? means honey (as the term of endearment, not the actual honey.) in Korean. ?
