Chapter 327

When Joshua returned to the waiting room, Cain and Icarus were waiting for him, just as he had expected.

โ€œIt was a great fight, Master,โ€ Icarus said.

โ€œHm.โ€ Joshua nodded.

โ€œWe only have a group battle left,โ€ Icarus continued. She glanced behind Joshua.

Cazes seemed to feel her eyes and came forward and bowed.

โ€œItโ€™s an honor to meet you,โ€ he said to her. โ€œIโ€™m Cazes Marahas, the subordinate of Captain Sanders.โ€

โ€œYo-youโ€™re too polite,โ€ came Icarusโ€™s surprised reply, hastily followed by a bow in return.

Just like Icarus said, Cazes was definitely too polite in some ways. A knight was considered the equal of a baronet. On top of that, the Imperial Knights, the highest knights in the Empire, were practically the same rank as barons, placing them above baronets. Despite all that, he was the first one to bow at Icarus, who was basically a commonerโ€ฆ

Cazes smiled lightly. โ€œYouโ€™re Icarus-nim, arenโ€™t you? I heard a lot about you. I feel like the moment the Captain happily talked about how he recruited a great strategist was yesterdayโ€ฆ but three years have already passed since then.โ€

โ€œMa-master talked about me?โ€ Icarus raised her head upon hearing an unexpected story, her eyes filled with curiosity. โ€œWhat did he sayโ€ฆ?โ€

Cazesโ€™s smile deepened

โ€œHe said that his strategist was very talented and was able to see the bigger picture in detail,โ€ he kindly explained, as if he were speaking to his sister.

Icarus eagerly waited on his every word, but no matter how long she waited, Cazes didnโ€™t say anything else.

โ€œIs that all?โ€ she asked, unable to hide her disappointment.

โ€œPardon?โ€ Cazes tilted his head.

โ€œWell, uhโ€ฆ Did he talk about any other characteristicsโ€ฆ?โ€ Icarus was flustered for some reason.

Cazes noticed and smiled knowingly.

โ€œThere is one natural-born swordsman in a hundred, but there is only one natural-born strategist in a ten thousand, so that title alone is extraordinary.โ€

โ€œYo-youโ€™re right. I must have put you on the spot with my useless questionโ€ฆโ€ Icarus timidly said.

โ€œAndโ€ฆโ€ Cazes continued, stepping closer so he could whisper to her, โ€œYouโ€™re more beautiful than most women of the Empire, but you pretended to be a man, although you were really bad at it. So he was quite impressedโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWait!โ€ Icarusโ€™s eyes widened. She instinctively turned her head to look at Cain.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Cain asked, tilting his head in confusion. โ€œDo you have anything to say to me?

โ€œNo-no.โ€ When Icarus saw Cainโ€™s reaction, she repeatedly shook her head and turned back to Cazes. โ€œHow in the worldโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you two stop whispering between yourselves now?โ€ Cain finally got fed up and decided that it was the right time to interrupt the two. โ€œDo you two know each other?โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t!โ€ Icarus yelled with a reddened face.

โ€œYou can just say no. Why are you yellingโ€ฆ?โ€ Cain turned his head to look at Cazes.โ€œHey, why donโ€™t we introduce ourselves?

โ€œYouโ€™re the Black Lion Cain de Harry, am I correct?โ€ Cazes smiled.

โ€œDo you know me?โ€ Cain tilted his head in confusion.

Cazes shrugged. โ€œWho wouldnโ€™t know the Superhuman that is famous all around the continent?โ€

โ€œWoah?โ€ Cain exclaimed.

โ€œOn top of that, Iโ€™ve heard a lot about you, although itโ€™s my first time meeting you.โ€ Cazes chuckled.

โ€œYou mean you heard a lot from my master, right?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Cazes said, nodding, โ€œthatโ€™s correct.โ€

That was when Cain loosened up a bit.

โ€œI was also quite touched when I watched the battle just now,โ€ Cain complimented Cazes. โ€œAlthough so many powerful figures were watching your fight, you had the guts to speak up with confidence.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nothing compared to your accomplishments, Sir Cain.โ€

Feeling the confidence rising inside him, Cain slightly raised his chin.

โ€œYou know a thing or two, huh?โ€

โ€œEven a child knows that.โ€ Cazes shrugged.

โ€œI feel like weโ€™ll get along greatโ€”unlike someone.โ€ Cain glanced sideways.

Cazes noted where Cain was looking and smiled.

โ€œItโ€™s an honor you think of me that way.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ Cain said.

Cazes waited for Cain to finish speaking.

โ€œI know Iโ€™m being nosy, but are you married?โ€

โ€œHere he goes again.โ€ Icarus just shook her head because she wasnโ€™t even surprised anymore.

โ€œI also have two children,โ€ Cazes replied.

โ€œOh, noโ€ฆโ€ Cain smacked his lips as if he was truly sad to hear that, but he was secretly relieved. โ€œWell, no one is perfect aside from my masterโ€ฆโ€

Cazes wasnโ€™t sure what to say.

โ€œThen are you living with your wife here in Arcadia?โ€

A bitter smile spread across Cazesโ€™s face.

โ€œSheโ€™s dead.โ€

Cain and Icarusโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œShe was born weak, and it happened shortly after she gave birth to our second childโ€ฆ But I didnโ€™t get to stay by her deathbed because I was away on a long business trip,โ€ Cazes bitterly explained.

โ€œI-Iโ€™m sorry for making you recall painful memoriesโ€ฆโ€ Cain apologized.

Cazes shook his head. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Itโ€™s in the past.โ€

โ€œPhewโ€ฆโ€ Icarus had been watching their conversation and ended up sighing. โ€œWhy did you have to ask such a questionโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œHow about you?!โ€ Cain snapped.

โ€œIโ€™m not your honey[1], Sir Cain!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the worst. How could you joke in a situation like this?โ€ Cain grumbled.

Icarus crossed her arms.

โ€œCanโ€™t you see our master agonizing over the upcoming group battle, Sir Cain?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ Cain turned to the aforementioned master, but Joshua just shrugged. Cain snorted. โ€œAgonize, my ass.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œDo you think thatโ€™s really the right word to describe our master? Since heโ€™s been reinstated as the Captain of the Auxiliary Battalion of the Imperial Knights, itโ€™s safe to say that heโ€™s already won the group battle. Even if theyโ€™re going up against the Imperial Knights, our master will be able to take out all of them alone in thirty minutes.โ€

โ€œBut still,โ€ Icarus insisted, but she couldnโ€™t continue.

โ€œIโ€™ll bet on twenty minutes,โ€ Cazes quietly said.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll bet on ten minutes!โ€ Cain shouted with a wide grin.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing better than wagers to get closer to somebody,โ€ Cazes said with a little chuckle.

โ€œShall we have a wager then?โ€ Cain suggested.

โ€œYouโ€™re on,โ€ Cazes said. โ€œWhat will you bet?โ€

โ€œI happened to have ten gold right nowโ€ฆ so Iโ€™ll bet all of it,โ€ Cain proclaimed, his grin stretching even wider.

โ€œArenโ€™t you a bit reckless with your money just because youโ€™re single?โ€ Cazes joked.

โ€œJust donโ€™t change your mind later,โ€ Cain warned him. โ€œIโ€™m not going to let you off the hook even if you beg me to return the money later because you donโ€™t have the money to buy snacks for your babies.โ€

Icarus watched their conversation go on, dumbfounded.

โ€œItโ€™s not a simple matter!โ€ Icarus shrieked.

โ€œโ€ฆMy eardrums are going to blow out,โ€ Joshua mumbled.

โ€œMaster!โ€ Icarus shouted.

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€ Joshua flinched as he was dragged into the crossfire.

โ€œYou know the other princes wonโ€™t just stay still, right?โ€ Icarus growled with blazing eyes.

โ€œWellโ€ฆโ€ Joshua shrugged.

โ€œTheyโ€™ll throw obstacles in our way by any means possible. Worst-case scenario, they might make your old colleagues fight against you.โ€

โ€œWhy do you care what happens to those traitors?โ€ Cain said dismissively.

โ€œDo you still not understand our master?โ€ Icarus glared at Cain. โ€œHe must have a different opinion.โ€

Joshuaโ€™s expression changed a bit, as if to affirm Icarusโ€™s assertion.

Cain frowned. โ€œNo way.โ€

โ€œCaptain.โ€ After Cain, Cazes came forward with a serious face. โ€œThey didnโ€™t make that choice because they wanted to.โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ Cain grumbled. โ€œI know everyone does something for a reason, but their choices were surelyโ€”โ€

โ€œMost of the current members of the Auxiliary Battalion are single,โ€ Cazes interrupted.

Cain flinched. โ€œYou meanโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œYes, most of them are single or lost their partners. Half of the knights that left the Battalion have wives, children, and old parents, so they have mouths to feedโ€”and those mouths wonโ€™t be able to survive without the knights,โ€œ Cazes bitterly continued. โ€œIf anything happens to them, their families donโ€™t have anyone to protect them, so their futures are obviousโ€”โ€ (f)reenovelkiss

โ€œArenโ€™t most of the Imperial Knights from prestigious noble families?โ€ Icarus interjected. โ€œHow bad can it beโ€”?โ€

โ€œMost of the knights in the Auxiliary Battalion used to be wanderers, so no one comes from the prestigious noble families that youโ€™re talking about. They were mercenaries or free knights that deserted their families for personal reasons,โ€ Cazes explained.

โ€œI didnโ€™t know thatโ€ฆโ€ Icarus trailed off into an awkward silence that weighed down on the room like a heavy blanket.

โ€œHey, hey.โ€ Cain was unable to withstand the silence and thus quickly changed the topic. โ€œBy the way, didnโ€™t you forget something, Icarus?โ€ ๐—ณ๐ซ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐ฐ๐—ฒ๐›๐ง๐จ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐ฅ.๐œ๐จ๐ฆ

โ€œI forgot something?โ€ Icarus tilted her head in confusion.

โ€œSince the man right before me is our real master, then what happened to the personโ€”no, the bastard that was going to be our masterโ€™s stand-in?โ€

โ€œOh, yeah!โ€ Icarus clapped after she finally recalled. โ€œMaster, did you meet them, by the way?โ€

โ€œโ€˜Themโ€™?โ€ Joshua repeated.

โ€œShe means your doppelganger and that fucking spear,โ€ Cain explained.

โ€œโ€ฆWhat?โ€ Joshua flinched and visibly stiffened. โ€œHeโ€™s here?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆMaster?โ€ Cain was perplexed. Joshuaโ€™s uncharacteristic nervousness contrasted worryingly with his usual unflappable composure.

โ€œNo, no wayโ€ฆโ€ Joshua mumbled.

Cain stayed silent.

โ€œCain,โ€ Joshua called.

โ€œYe-yes, sir?โ€ Cain replied.

โ€œWhere did he go?โ€

โ€œAc-actuallyโ€ฆโ€ Cain stuttered, โ€œI asked because I also donโ€™t knowโ€ฆโ€

Joshua shut his mouth and began to think. If Cain was right about him being here, then Joshua had an idea about his location, because there was only one location he would go to in the Avalon Empire.

โ€˜We took different routesโ€”no, he must have moved beforehand since he could sense me, thenโ€ฆโ€™ Joshua narrowed his eyes.

At that moment, someone loudly shouted from the outside of the waiting room, bringing Joshua back to reality.

โ€œMr. Joshua Sanders! You have been ordered by the Emperor to come to the first-class seat of the colosseum before the group battle starts!โ€

โ€œIs itโ€ฆ?โ€ Icarus tensed up when the event she had expected actually came true.

โ€œWhy would he say it's an order from the Emperor when there isnโ€™t one right now?โ€ Cain pouted.

โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ Joshua headed to the door without hesitation.

Cain hesitated for a moment.

โ€œMaster, wouldnโ€™t it be better to summon the other knights of the Auxiliary Battalion and say hiโ€ฆ?!โ€

โ€œI think the same,โ€ Cazes chimed in. โ€œTheyโ€™ll come running if you summon them right now. Since we donโ€™t know what kind of schemes the princes are up to, it would be better to move after you meet the knightsโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t have the time.โ€œ Joshua even looked anxious, so Cazes no longer said anything. โ€œCain.โ€

โ€œYes, master,โ€ Cain replied.

โ€œIs it okay if I join in on the wager you guys talked about?โ€ Joshua asked out of the blue.

Cain gaped. โ€œโ€ฆPardon? When you talk about wager, you meanโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œOne minute,โ€ Joshua said.

Cain boggled at him.

โ€œIโ€™ll make all the knights and other Captains that attack me kneel within a minute. If I win, I want you to do me a favor without complaining,โ€ Joshua told Cain.

Then he immediately exited the room.

Icarus, Cain, and Cazes gaped at the door that Joshua had gone through, dumbfounded.

โ€œDid he say โ€˜one minuteโ€™โ€ฆ?โ€ they mumbled.

1. Itโ€™sโ€ฆ Korean wordplay. The raw was โ€œ???โ€ฆโ€ and โ€œ? ?? ? ??? ??????โ€œ ?? means honey (as the term of endearment, not the actual honey.) in Korean. ?
