'Understood! A few humans follow Group 1, too,' Group 2 reported.

Whisper nodded to herself. Things were working out so far, but the entire operation wasn't finished yet. freeweɓnøvel.com

'We are almost there—the wasps are intercepting us!' the first group's Sergeants messaged a moment later. 'But we have a person in position for the final stage of the plan.'

'Keep fighting!' Whisper said with as much encouragement as a telepathic message could fit.

'I smell the second group—some wasps moved to hunt them, Agent Whisper, and our load became easier,' the first group's Sergeant replied. 'There are still more than a dozen ahead, and much more inside the nest. The horse-beast is blind with fear, though—it won't notice them.'

'One Beehound is down, but alive,' the second group's Sergeant messaged, partially overlapping with the other Sergeant's message. 'Wasps don't let us advance further, but humans chase after the first group's horse-beast.'

'Take your sister and start retreating,' Whisper ordered to Group 2.

'Understood. We can still fight them off… As long as we aren't surrounded!'

The Group 1 had to continue on their own for a little while longer. Just for a little while…

'The beast is in position! We strike!' Group 1 reported.

Whisper bated her breath, waiting for the rest of the report.

This was the key part of the plan.

The horse-beast, already scared and in pain from bee stings, was chased right toward the wasps' nest, guided by telepathic messages of the Beehounds. All the while, other horse-beasts ran around in fear and humans chased their precious tamed animals…

'A success! The horse-beast fell within a hundred meters of the paper wasps' nest, Agent Whisper! It broke many things and screams in pain—humans are already running toward it. We can't retreat safely—wasps surround us—but we can die with honor.'

Whisper imagined how this happened vividly. A single sting in a horse's leg or its eye would've been enough to make the horse rapidly change directions. A creature this large was extremely cumbersome, even more than a human.

It would fall and crush itself with its own weight.

Now humans would gather around it, and meet the wasps' nest, full of angry wasps, many of which gathered near the horse. Humans would even blame the horse's injury on them (because wasps were larger and brighter than bees, and angrier as well, prone to sting anyone who got close to their nests).

After that, Bloodimina won't have to wait for Farini to deal with the nest. His enemies will do it, and while they fight bees, Agent Bees will finally be able to look at what the High King's army planned.

A risky plan, and with plenty of things that could go wrong, but so far, it was working out.

In the worst-case scenario, a loss of two dozens of Beehounds wasn't too terrible for Bloodimina's forces.

'Thank you for your service, sisters,' Whisper said to Group 1, addressing her message to everyone at once.

'Three more got wounded, but the wasps are changing targets. The horse-beasts and humans so close to their nest must be triggering their defensive instincts,' the second group Sergeant's messaged. 'These three can carry the fourth one to safety. We can retreat in full now.'

Whisper hesitated for a moment.

If humans were distracting the wasps, perhaps the first group also had a chance?

As if this message reached her mind, the Group 1's Sergeant reported in the next instant.

'One wasp is down, three wasps just separated from those who attacked us and turned on the horse-beast. Four are left… Five of us can fight. A Beemarine would've said those are good chances.' The Sergeant paused. 'Sorry, Agent, that report was unprofessional.'

Her sisters really were dying heroically…

Whisper grimaced.

If Father was there, he'd charge there himself in his shining armor and with his golden spear and strike all wasps dead with a single strike!

Father wasn't there, and responsibility was on Whisper.

'Group 2, let the wounded retreat to a safer place on your own. Those who can fight well enough—try getting Group 1 out. Humans will serve as your distraction!'

Then,

'Group 1, hold on. I sent Group 2 on your way. Clear the way and fly away as fast as you can.'

It was not just caused by her desire to save several more Beehounds even if it meant risking other Beehounds, Whisper decided. The chances of humans blaming everything on wasps were higher if fewer bees, dead or alive, were found around.

'Yes, Agent Whisper.'

'Got it. We will hold on! The humans are almost there—wasps are leaving their nests just to threaten them. More humans are approaching in the distance. It will be a success, even if both groups die here now.'

'Don't die,' Whisper replied sternly to the first group's Sergeant.

She waited again.

'A wasp is down. We've almost reached Group 1,' the second group's Sergeant reported, almost simultaneously with the first group's Sergeant saying almost the same.

Now they both reported the same events, increasing Whisper's growing headache, but she held strong, because her sisters held even stronger.

They killed two more wasps and others got more and more distracted by humans, even though the horse finally died and stopped attracting their attention.

By then, there were four bees left in the first group, and seven in the second—not counting the wounded that retreated earlier.

'Retreating now,' Group 1's Sergeant said. After a brief pause, she added, 'The wasps are chasing us, but we are faster.'

'Retreat until you are fully safe,' Whisper ordered.

Now, the success of the mission was out of their hands and in the hands of humans. Whisper let out a long breath and waited for further news.

They came a minute later.

'Wasps stopped chasing us; the wounded are with us, too,' Group 1's Sergeant messaged. 'I see humans bring torches to the nest.'

Whisper beamed.

'A success, then! Return to us as quickly as possible. I will ask Bloodimina to reward you somehow!'

Whisper still had to fly in person to tell Bloodimina that she could send in a proper spying squad now. But this was a much more pleasing task, even if this meant getting out from under Farini's hat!
