Chapter 24 - VOLUME 2 Chapter 7: Cracks in the Frost
Chapter 7: Cracks in the Frost.
The man clad in grim black armor stood tall on the center stage, the faint creak of his gauntlets echoing in the massive hall as he shifted slightly.
For a moment, the entire room turned silent once more, unsure whether to continue talking or just watch and see.
While everyone was busy wondering what the figure would do next, The armoured man finally spoke. His voice deep and steady, carrying without need for amplification as if already enhanced by magic.
"All you bratty grubs better listen attentively cause I ain't gonna repeat myself again. The names Kenshin Yamamoto," he said casually. "I'll be your future Physical Combat instructor but as of now, I'll be the one taking care of your Orientation."
A ripple of surprise swept through the seated students.
"And before any of you get excited," he went on, resting a hand lazily on his hip, "The principal and the other heads ain't coming. They're too busy with... more important stuff but between you and me, those old coats probably thought it was better to waste their time on something more productive than you batch of grubs."
He shrugged, the heavy armor plates clinking softly.

"As you can see, They all left the boring job to me. So, you're stuck."
The murmuring grew louder. Nervous. Confused.
'Is he serious...?'
Hitoshi blinked, his small fists tightening against his knees. This wasn't how he imagined orientation at a prestigious academy would go at all.
Kenshin continued, not missing a beat nor caring for the weird and bewildered expressions the freshmen where beginning to make.
"As for orientation...," he said, sounding almost bored. "You've got guidebooks, yeah? Read 'em. Not my job to hold your hands. Honestly I'd rather not waste my precious time reading out a piece of parchment to you useless worms so just do that yourselves in your free time alright?"
He then snapped his fingers sharply.
With a soft mechanical whirr, a stone pillar rose from the center of the stage. A small cage sat atop it, inside which floated a tiny spirit. humanoid in shape, with the appearance of a black cat with sapphire eyes, lazily stretching around with a grumpy look on its face.
The spirit yawned audibly. "Tch. Finally. Hurry up and get this over with Kenshin-San. I wanna nap already."
" You and me both. I can't believe they stuck us with babysitting duty." Kenshin stretched lazily as well, yawning.
The students stared, dumbfounded at the sight.
Even Hitoshi gawked.
' Spirits can get grumpy too? ...That's kinda cute.' Hitoshi thought while trying to process all he was seeing.
Kenshin ignored the spirit's attitude entirely. He jerked a thumb at it.
"Touch the pillar when your name's called. The spirit'll check your Class Potential. Simple as that."
He was just about to continue when—
"This is Unacceptable!" A sharp voice cut clean across the hall.
All heads turned only to see a girl who stood near the seats near the stage. perfectly composed, yet brimming with chilly arrogance.
She was beautiful in a cold, distant way. Waist-length silver hair cascading like a waterfall, fox ears twitching faintly atop her head, and three elegant silver tails flicking behind her in agitation.
Her uniform was immaculate, her blue eyes piercing.
"Tsukishiro Sayaka....Still as tight dressed as ever...I guess things never change." Aiko muttered beneath her breath.
' So she's the Sayaka those idiots where talking about. The way she said that sounds like they have a past of some sort or could I be imagining things.' Hitoshi who overheard Aiko thought to himself. ' Even though. Is that girl a birdbrain?, Why would she dare to talk back to that monster!' Hitoshi's stared at Sayaka with a look that seemed to say he was looking at an utter fool hungry for death.
While everyone was stunned by the sudden turn of events, The Kitsune girl who was at the center of attention spoke up once more.
"Nightwood Academy stands for excellence," Sayaka said firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument. "We are nobles. Scholars. Future leaders. Not common riffraff. So why do you insist on acting like an uneducated commoner before us!"
Her lips curled slightly in disdain as her eyes landed back on Kenshin.
"I refuse to be taught by someone who treats their duty with such carelessness."
Murmurs erupted again among the students. Some looked impressed by her boldness. Others looked terrified.
Aiko simply sighed, tapping her nails against her seat in annoyance.
' Great,' Hitoshi thought grimly, his fists tightening. ' A stuck-up showoff who's going to get everyone here into trouble....'
Kenshin simply tilted his helmeted head slightly, like he was regarding an interesting insect.
"So you're saying someone like me ain't fit to teach you?" he asked, voice still lazy but edged with an unreadable sharpness.
Sayaka didn't waver. "I'm saying your poor conduct is a disgrace to the Academy."
" As an instructor, you should act accordingly. I as well as everyone here came to this academy because of its noble reputation and grand teachers. Yet you stand here before us today, sullying that same noble reputation. Don't you think that your unfit to teach us after that?"
' She's right...is he even an instructor?'
' What sort of instructor would act so uncoot?'
' He's probably some useless peasant who got in hear because of some deplorable achievements.'
' I can't believe the great Night wood academy would ever employ someone like this...'
One by one, the students began gossiping amongst themselves. With each word growing more disrespectful than the last.
' These Nincompoops!, do they have a death wish or something?!' Hitoshi who was nothing but an innocent bystander was busy sweating buckets.
The instructor didn't reply immediately yet, his continuous silence increased the growing tension, making it more suffocating.
" I see.... " Kenshin replied, his voice sounding lax.
" So do you also think I'm unfit to be your instructor?" Kenshin pointed to a random student in the audience.
The student who suddenly felt everyone's eyes on them flinched but when he saw everyone's eager gazes he trembled while replying.
" Uhh...I think lady Tsukishiro is right. Your actions earlier was unfit as an instructor."
" Oh..." Kenshin said. " Then what about you." He pointed at another student.
