Reincarnated as the fourth son of a noble and tamed an SS-rank dragon-Chapter 51: An Unsecured Safe
After a day, Darius received his payment. He was surprised by the coins, which were diamond-shaped and had a hole in the center. From what he understood, the ratio of the coins was the same as Velmont’s coins, except for one coin, which was thinner and had a different coloring. In the conversion, 10 brass coins were equivalent to 1 copper coin.
He found it interesting, he had never seen coins from other countries, but it was relatively common for coins from other countries to circulate in commercial cities, where the conversion was done by the merchants who agreed to make the sale.
But he didn’t want to keep another country’s currency and he couldn’t exchange it easily, so he took the opportunity to pay the shopkeepers who were selling him bread. The decision to continue buying bread was beneficial for the merchants, who stopped complaining a bit about the cheaper food, as well as helping the village, which managed to reduce a large part of its wheat stock. But they were still a long way from being able to sell all their stock.
Darius was sitting on a bench in the street, he was in an area similar to a square, where it was common for people to sit and read something, it was the quietest part of town. The silence was due to some stones that consumed the sound waves and at night released the sound energy in the form of light energy. This conversion caught Darius’ attention, but he didn’t see much use in many things, as it could end up consuming some important sounds.
But in the square it was different, it only consumed the external sounds, and the sound of conversations continued within an area.
A man sat on the other side, staring at Darius. When Darius stood up, the man began to follow him. But he was lost.
Kaly was watching the man, she was following him because she wanted to know what he wanted. But she didn’t get much information, nor did she find out who had hired him.
Darius had heard from San that he was going to be kidnapped again. As much as he wanted more spoils of war, he didn’t want to have another noble wanting revenge later, so eliminating him before anyone else knew would be the best course of action.
Kaly followed the man to a bar. As expected, it was Carl, but eliminating the two of them would raise suspicions, as Lucian had taken his job, so assimilations like this would be common and would probably lead nowhere, but it was best to avoid any problems that might arise.
Darius decided to just ignore it for the time being and focus on the more essential, he should plan how the selection of the competitors would be, he wanted to use the adventurers as judges, and he could do that, but he still wanted to know the criteria that would be taken into account. But he was at a loss as to how to do this and just passed the job on to them, what would count was trust.
A few days passed and Darius was already getting angry at having to run away from that man, so he let himself be kidnapped, but Kaly was following, this time she would enter the mansion and help collect the money.
Collection isn’t the best word, but that’s what Darius was calling it.
Darius was tied up in what looked like a vault, it was large and the metal wall seemed to be quite thick. No one went in there to say anything or intimidate him, so Darius first tried to use telepathy magic but was unsuccessful, then he tried teleportation, which worked, and then he talked to Kaly. He wouldn’t destroy the mansion or threaten Carl, he would just steal everything from the vault and pretend that nothing had happened.
The man had used a potion which, when inhaled, made the person pass out. Darius didn’t know that Carl had gone to him, but whether he did or not, he just wanted the money.
Darius teleported with Kaly and they both managed to collect every last bronze coin.
The vault was underground, it had iron walls and the ground itself to prevent anyone from digging into it. The rest of the vault was made up of stone walls and a concrete that resembled Roman concrete.
Carl was having a conversation with the Man when they opened the vault, Carl planned to laugh out loud and threaten to kill Darius, but Carl ended up falling to the ground.
The next day some horsemen were at the mansion.
In this world there are no police officers, and all security matters were the responsibility of the guard, which was a group made up of mages, swordsmen, archers, and other military forces, they acted in the general protection of cities, such as guarding the gates and arresting criminals.
"We’ve received a report that Darius Lestor has broken into the mansion and stolen all of Baron Carl Balcoak’s treasure," the guard said as he waited at the door.
Lucian followed and asked them to wait in the living room, then asked a servant to call Darius.
"He’s the person you’re accusing. Do you really think a child would break into a mansion and steal all of a Baron’s money?" Lucian paused while he waited for Darius to sit down. "If he’s able to steal a safe, which should be protected, then we have a major security breach. Don’t you think?"
The two guards stared at each other, thinking they had been made fools of by the Baron. But they should still get on with the job.
"Where were you last night?"
"I was at my factory, it’s near the village."
"Can anyone confirm that?"
"Only my employees, but I think you would disregard that. So wouldn’t it be better to ask the guards at the gate?" 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
The guard didn’t understand.
"The Baron’s mansion is inside the city walls, at least as far as I know. If that’s the case, then you could ask the guards if they saw me going in or out through any of the walls. It would be better to check with whoever was actually there, don’t you think?"
They didn’t know what to answer, Darius continued to explain what they could do and Lucian considered that Darius was explaining the basics to the guards, that not even they themselves knew it.
Darius knew that something like this could happen, so he prepared himself, used a clone to leave through one of the gates before nightfall, greeted one of the guards, and asked him if he wanted to eat a leftover hot dog.
That way he could do well in the event of prosecution.
"Are you going to arrest me on evidence?"
"No, we can’t do that, we’re just investigating."
They were embarrassed, the situation hadn’t gone as planned, they had expected an adult who would soon get nervous and confess, not a child who would end up teaching them obvious things as if they were two idiots.
Darius considered them to be stupid people, as they didn’t seem to know the basics of a criminal investigation. But his vision was what he used to see in series, so he couldn’t compare.
The men said goodbye and left.
Lucian was laughing.
"I can’t believe you did that, it was very wrong, but I don’t blame you. Did he threaten you?"
Lucian knew about the kidnapping and about Darius getting more spoils of war.
"I woke up and I was tied up in the vault, I could use magic to escape without anyone being able to see me, so there’s no one who saw me, at least awake. But otherwise, I have some witnesses who can confirm that I left town before nightfall, so the story won’t go any further."
"I’m going to issue an exclusion order, Carl will no longer be a merchant. There’s a rule that serves to prevent loss of credibility, if a merchant makes up a lie about another merchant, he can lose all his benefits, as well as being prevented from registering again for a period of one year."
Unlike the Adventurers’ Guild, the Merchants’ Guild is not international, all registrations are only within a certain country, although the registration serves to allow the merchant to enter without a fee, he must register in the country if he wants to carry out commercial transactions.
So Carl could still register in another country if he wanted to.
"I thought it was a heavy punishment, but considering what he tried to do, it’s for the best," Darius said as he stood up and said goodbye.
Darius needed to send more money to the Guild, his plan to have more wheat being sold had exceeded expectations and now many people were buying and making bread, although he was afraid this would end up becoming a problem, he still wanted to continue buying bread, having a stock could be good for the future.
However, he would still need to think of new ways of eating, gradually people would start to get sick of eating the same food. But given the price, that would take a while.
Darius stared at the queue that was growing, even other people were starting to bake bread, but the problem was Baron Carl, who was waiting for him at the Guild door.
