Chapter 282: Sounding Him Out

Eva, after discussing it with Ralph, had returned to the box.

"Mr. Warren, we need some time to consider it, and we’ll give you a reply tomorrow. Are you okay with it?"

Eva’s tone of voice was very polite. She was totally unaware of what had happened in the box minutes ago, and she certainly didn’t know that this man was sent here by Nicholas.

The moneybags surnamed Warren was courteous as well.

"Sure, sure, Miss Loraine. I look forward to cooperating with you."

It was already midnight when Eva returned to her apartment.

Having attended two business dinner parties in one day, she was exhausted.

However, on entering the house, she spotted a suited man sitting on her sofa, resting with his eyes closed.

Eva was scared to death.

"Why are you sitting there in the middle of the night? Are you a member of some kind of cult??"

Only then did Nicholas open his eyes and, though knowing the answer, ask, "Why are you so late? Where have you been?"

Eva glared at him. "It’s none of your business."

"You were with him all night?"

"Who?"

"That fledgling of the Cobb family."

Eva didn’t like it when Nicholas talked about Ralph like that. "He has a name. It’s Ralph Cobb."

If it weren’t for the fact that the one they negotiated with earlier this evening worked for him, Nicholas would have been furious at the thought of his woman staying out so late with another man.

"I’m going to spend the night here."

With that Nicholas began to undress and then naturally walked towards her bedroom.

"Hey!"

Eva fell in with him. "I haven’t agreed yet."

She hadn’t decided to make peace with him yet.

"Either I sleep here or I work with you two, starting from tomorrow. Your choice." It had never occurred to Eva that Nicholas would return.

Also, it was late, and she was really tired and not inclined to have another fight.

In the end, she resignedly acquiesced in his stay.

Eva was so sleepy that she fell asleep immediately after her head rested on the pillow.

But Nicholas was much more energetic.

She fell asleep but then was awakened by his body weight and the scalding heat from him.

While she was sleepy, Nicholas thrust himself inside her...

Eva woke up the next morning to find her phone vibrating.

The call was from Ralph. Nicholas on the other side of the bed was eying her ominously.

The look in his eyes seemed to say, "Answer it. Answer it right in front of me. I want to hear what you guys will talk about."

She pressed her lips together and answered the phone.

"Hello?"

"Have you thought about cooperating with the building materials company?"

"Well... about that..."

Originally, Eva had wanted to get up early this morning to look up some information before deciding on this matter.

She had not bargained on Nicholas showing up last night and kept her from sleep until midnight.

She had been drained of energy and her sleep had been so deep that she’d overslept.

"I haven’t made a decision yet."

"Which company?"

Nicholas at the bedside asked in a deep low voice without misgiving.

Ralph on the other end of the line heard it as well.

There was a man beside Eva.

And it was morning...

Ralph’s heart sank.

After a few moments’ silence, Eva said, "I’ll call you back in half an hour."

"All right."

Ralph hung up the phone, feeling very uncomfortable.

In Eva’s apartment. On the bed.

She got up and said, "You should go. I’ll call you after I get that piano thing settled."

She did not blame him for deliberately speaking loudly when she was talking with Ralph on the phone. She just felt that since they were dating, there was nothing wrong with Nicholas wanting to have other men know she was his girlfriend.

She had no reason to be angry.

"I know that building materials company," said Nicholas. "The owner is an honest man."

"You know him?" asked Eva.

Nicholas said, "Yeah." Then he added, "I cooperated with him once."

"Oh..."

After thinking about it for a while, Eva suddenly said, "Nick."

"Yes?"

She was looking out of the window, the sun streaming onto her fair-complexioned face.

There was a hint of confusion in Eva’s eyes.

"The other day, you told Stella that you’re my..."

Eva found herself unable to utter that word.

But she remembered clearly that what Nicholas said was "husband".

"Have you really considered marrying me?"

After hearing her sudden question, Nicholas came to realize that she had been bothered by the fact that he’d denied dating her during that interview with the financial magazine in the office that day.

"Like I said, I’m not having a dalliance with you.

"I’ll never have a mistress. All I want is a Mrs. Brown."

Eva turned to look Nicholas in the eye.

"What if I want to go public with our relationship?"

He looked at her.

His upper body was bare, his strong muscles revealed.

"Do you really want to go public with it or is this some kind of test?" She said, "If I insist we go public with it, would you agree?" The look on Nicholas’s face became a trifle sullen. He didn’t like being coerced.

Everybody they knew had seen how nice he was to Eva. His feelings for her were unassailable.

She was his only woman. He’d never played the field, and no other woman had ever dared chase after him.

Since Lydia Evans’s departure, Eva had been the only girl he’d had dealings with, so it made no difference if they went public with their relationship or not.

...

When the time was ripe, he would marry her covertly.

In fact, he was more anxious than anyone to go public with their relationship and get married.

But because of safety concerns, he couldn’t do that.

"Don’t get emotional, Eva," he said.

Eva felt a sharp sting in the heart at his words.

She clenched her fists, her voice choked.

"I’ve been working day and night to make money.

"Because I wanna become a woman worthy of you!

"If you can’t even hold my hand on the street, I think we should go our separate ways right now."

This was her first time being in a romantic relationship as well. She found such grievance unbearable!

With that Eva left with the things she needed for work.

After that, she changed the password of the combination lock on the door.

This time, she was really determined to break up with Nicholas.

Tears rolled down her cheeks the instant Eva walked out of the house.

But she quickly composed herself and went to work.

Times Square, Hiltonan.

Eva weaved her way through the forest of skyscrapers. When passing a baby furniture store, she overheard a piece of astounding news.

"Yeah, yeah, Mr. Leinster’s wife is very beautiful! But she’s so young. It’s said her family’s rich as well. The other day I saw her mother pick her up, driving a Maserati and carrying an ostrich skin handbag, looking quite posh."

Eva paused. Mr. Leinster’s wife? Wasn’t it Yvonne?

She hadn’t seen Yvonne for a while. She’d only heard that Yvonne was pregnant and had been recuperating recently.

"Ha, life is not easy for wives of rich men either. Mr. Leinster is a famous moneybags in Hiltonan. Countless women are chasing after him.

"You know, there seems to be some kind of vibe going on between him and Ms. Jenkins."

The indifferent look in Eva’s eyes became cold at those words.

She had parted from Nicholas only this morning. For the first time, Nicholas had not tried to have her stay.

She had been feeling depressed all along.

Having heard that Yvonne’s husband might be cheating on her, she became even angrier!

"I’m here to see Ms. Jenkins."

The two teachers who were discussing just now didn’t know what she wanted to do, and one of them said in a low voice, "She’s inside... Walk to the end of the corridor and turn right."

Wearing a pair of Dr. Martens, Eva stormed inside without another word.

When she reached the end of the corridor, she saw an office. The plate on the door bore the words "Sibel Jenkins".

"Who are you to Zachary Leinster?"

Eva asked without preamble.

She had accidentally heard about this matter. As Yvonne was pregnant now, she couldn’t let such a thing trouble Yvonne’s mind.

So Eva decided to handle it by herself.

Sibel’s face hardened as she realized that her visitor was here to make trouble.

"Who are you?"

"I’m gonna ask you one more time - who are you to Zachary Leinster?"

Sibel smiled.

That smile struck Eva as cheap and slutty.

"If you’re here to get justice for Yvonne Taylor, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

"Nothing’s ever happened between me and Mr. Leinster."

"Nothing happened? What do you mean?" Eva said sardonically. "Are you saying you have feelings for him but haven’t crossed the line yet or that you two shared a bed, but he didn’t put his thing inside you?"

As far as Eva knew, Zachary had been very nice to Yvonne.

So it was very likely that this pregnant woman was trying to seduce him.

Unsurprisingly, what Sibel said next was mind-boggling.

"Miss, there’s nothing going on between me and Mr. Leinster. Even if there were, it’s between the three of us.

"Miss Taylor is from a noble family. I don’t have the fond hope of replacing her as Mrs. Leinster, but we’re all adults. She’s only just got pregnant, and it’s a natural

thing that she’s no longer able to satisfy her husband’s sexual needs. You know what I mean, I suppose?"

Slap!

Eva slapped Sibel hard across the face, heedless of her pregnancy.

"You - "

Snap! She slapped Sibel again.

Teeth gritted, Eva gave Sibel three slaps across the face in quick succession, reducing her to screaming.

Eva had never seen such a shameless person.
