Extra's Path To Demon King-Chapter 464: The Growing Bond
Axel sighed, "They touched her, and were about to...."
"But don’t worry, the worst predicament did not happen. Because even if they did spare me in exchange for violating her. But one must know that there are some things in this world that are far worse than death."
"What would happen if I saw my mother being raped right in front of me? Would I remain sane? Would my mind remain strong enough to live on?"
Axel stated, "No, it would not."
"And I’m glad that she did not sacrifice her dignity. She blew up all of her Nexus cores. And I can only imagine how great a pain she must have experienced in her last moments because exploding the Nexus cores is akin to exploding one’s soul. There would remain no trace of her existence in any spiritual plane of the world. A true end," he explained with a hollow laugh.
"She protected me using the last ounce of her power, while killing the assassins with her explosion, but not all of them died, of course. But don’t you want to know who they were, Vyra?" said Axel.
Vyra remained silent, her body almost shaking as she looked at him, and asked, "Who?"
Axel leaned forward as he whispered, "Livia Dusker, the King’s sister and the former princess, colluded with the Vex family to accomplish this. The Duchess was there from the start. She remained unharmed even when my mother exploded. While I was covered in my mother’s exploded flesh and blood."
"In fact, the reason she did not kill me afterward was that the Duchess inspected that my spirit had already been broken? She wanted my father to live in agony for every day that I spent in dead sleep. Not being able to do anything for me."
Axel paused, looking at her eyes deeply, "I’m not saying any of this to romanticize my struggles, Vyra, but I am simply saying all of this to make you understand that I have my reasons for doing everything. It’s fine if you hate me, but the world isn’t exactly black and white as you like to think."
"But the problem is that, with this mentality of yours, you will never be able to understand Heinz on a deeper level. Because his life was far worse than you can imagine. Unlike you, people like Heinz and me, our lives are fueled by hatred, not by love and compassion."
"Though this tragedy of mine isn’t really much in the grand scheme of things either. Heck, what I went through in the first trial was far worse than this."
Vyra asked with some hesitation, her green eyes becoming dim, "So, you’re doing all of this for revenge."
Axel shook his head, "It’s a part of it, but not entirely."
Vyra frowned. She wanted to ask what it was, but she knew that he would not answer that, so she asked something else, "I understand. But Mason Vex still lives, and Livia Dusker is protected by the King himself, even if I disregard the Duke of Dusker?"
Axel remained silent. Vyra’s eyes widened in terror at the look in his eyes. "Don’t tell me you are scheming against the royal family?"
She said through gritted teeth, "Axel, if the Suncrest royal family falls, the consequences of it are too great?"
But the coldness in Axel’s eyes only deepened, his runic eyes shimmered in a dark hue, Vyra stepped back, she murmured in disbelief, "No, no, you would do it for Sophia. To free her, you were always planning to go against them."
"Yes," stated Axel nonchalantly.
Vyra got up from the opposite seat of the carriage and sat beside him, grabbing his hand. She pleaded, "Axel, there must be a better way—some other method to resolve all things. At least the royal family must remain standing firm to protect this kingdom, even humanity itself. Please..."
Axel glanced at her small hands that grabbed his own and spoke softly, "Vyra, sometimes it doesn’t take an Angel to save the world, but just a devil who can clean up the mess and swallow the darkness that lingers."
He sighed, holding her hand gently, and explained, with a small smile, "Vyra, you’re worrying too much. Those things are still too far ahead, and I don’t even know if I could succeed.
"But I will tell you this. Even if the heavens fall, I will protect the people I care about. And you’re one of them. So, for you, nothing would change, I can assure you that," promised Axel.
Vyra felt a tingling sensation through the bloodline connection they shared, and she felt it instinctively, his honest intent; he was speaking nothing but the truth. There was a long stretch of silence as the two held each other’s hands tightly.
Axel looked at her green eyes and said, "There is no absolute right or wrong, Vyra. There are only conflicting perspectives. Gains and losses. I don’t agree with your ways. But I respect it. And I hope you can do the same for me."
As his sentence finished, the carriage stopped; it seemed like they had arrived at the capital. Axel moved his gaze, and just as he was about to get up. Vyra tightened her grip and held him back. Before he could frown, she stood up and stood in front. She pulled him into a small hug.
That gesture completely took Axel aback. As his face touched her soft neck, a beautiful scent entered his nostrils. Strands of her red hair touched his face. He was flabbergasted, "You? What are you doing?"
She rubbed the back of his head with her small hands, "I’m sorry for the things I said. I.. I shouldn’t have been so harsh on you.
After a moment of pause, she whispered in his ear, "And I hope one day you can have the one you so dearly love, the one who can truly heal your broken heart."
Axel’s eyes trembled as his mind went blank. His hands involuntarily moved, and he hugged her tightly as well, closing his eyes. Vyra was a bit surprised by this gesture, but did not resist.
Then silence descended on the carriage, but it was not an uncomfortable one. There was no romantic interest between the two.
It was simply a boy who was burdened by the weight of the world, relying on his friend, and the girl who misunderstood and mistreated her friend was trying to apologize in her own way, even though their fundamental disagreement remained.
After a few minutes of silent embrace, Axel coughed; he was somewhat embarrassed. His eyes were heavy, and he almost wanted to cry. He hated this part of himself; he couldn’t hold back his weak and pathetic self from surfacing when it came to the people he cared for.
Especially if they understood him and comforted him, he would turn into a pathetic, crying, helpless bastard. Even so, he really was happy that Vyra showed such understanding towards him. Disregarding the horrible things he had done right in front of her eyes. She truly was exceptionally kind.
Of course, it didn’t mean that she forgave him for the things he had done. Because he once threatened the life of Heinz to make her submit. So, she still had great grievances against him in her heart. At least there was some progress in resolving that hatred now.
Besides, he didn’t feel right hugging his best friend’s girlfriend like this for more than a few minutes. Even though he didn’t see her in that way, she still was one of the most beautiful girls he had ever seen. He didn’t want to make things awkward between the two of them for the future.
Vyra also gently separated from him and patted his head with a beautiful smile. Axel’s eyebrows twitched. "Why are you treating me like a lost puppy?"
Vyra laughed and said in a mocking tone, "Strangely, I don’t feel that you’re so scary anymore. You can cry if you want."
"You?" Axel was speechless. He let out a dissatisfied snort, moving her hand away, and he exited the carriage. The driver had already called for the two of them multiple times.
Vyra followed right behind, laughing beautifully, dazing the crowd with her magical appearance and sonorous laughter. Many men had their hearts tightened at the mere sight of this majestic beauty, with blood-red hair and gem-like green eyes.
She asked, unafraid of the crowd’s reaction, "Did you feel your pride hurt now?"
Axel said coldly, "I wonder what Heinz will say once he hears that you hugged someone else?"
Vyra sneered, "As if he will believe the words of a stranger."
Axel went silent for a moment. He glanced at her and said after some hesitation, "You might not believe me, but even if you refused me back then. I would not have truly hurt Heinz; in fact, I couldn’t do it. There was no other option to save you, other than to...."
Vyra looked in his eyes deeply, "Well, I still don’t trust you. But I will choose to believe in your words, for now..." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Axel wore a complicated smile, "Thank you. That’s enough for me..."
"Yup, you definitely want to cry...." mocked Vyra again.
"You bitch...." Axel became furious.
