"Here, take this," Kika uttered, stretching the pill toward Alaric’s mouth. Her face was filled with determination, proof she wasn’t going to let off easily.
Alaric, on the other hand, was seated on his deck, a nervous expression on his face as he stared at her.
His three summons were also present.
While Laura and Aurora stood at the side of the room, Auzure sat on Alaric’s lap, licking an apple popsicle.
’This woman won’t listen.’
Alaric grabbed his mother’s hand containing the round pill. "I promise you I’m fine. I no longer have the parasite inside me," he said.
Kika glared. "Are you sure? Or are you just saying that to avoid using the pill? It’s not that disgusting, I assure you."
"The taste isn’t the issue here..." Alaric could only look away as his mother’s hand got closer to his mouth.
『Oi! Don’t just stand there, help me, I am about to be poisoned.』
He looked at his summons.
Aurora was the first to respond.
(I agree with your mother, Master. You were really sick, on the verge of death. I don’t think it’s something we can simply take for granted.)
’You too?’ Alaric turned his attention to Laura, and she didn’t seem to object.
’You people think I’d be sitting here if I was actually sick?!’
Grabbing his mother’s hand tightly, he managed to reach for her ribs.
And then...
Tickle! Tickle!
Kika laughed, shaking as she tried to make Alaric stop.
Which then led to the pill falling to the ground.
"Oh no, the pill!" She covered her mouth in surprise.
Alaric sighed. "Relax, Mother, I am fine. If anything, I think what you should be focusing on is who could have poisoned me with a parasite."
"I... I don’t think it would be anyone from the mansion," Kika said.
"Well, I don’t think so either. Then again, I can’t exactly say I don’t have enemies in the barony."
Which was right, considering he still never paid the salary of the workers.
"If that’s the case, then... it’s truly heartbreaking to know there is someone who wants to kill my son." Kika looked to the ground with a sad look on her face.
Alaric observed her for a while. "I’ve told you before, I don’t plan on dying. Not until I have covered everything I need to do for the barony. So you don’t have to worry. It’s not really something you should be worrying about."
"Heh." Kika smiled. "You sound just like your dad before we went bankrupt."
Just then, Erica appeared inside the room, an excited look on her face.
"Father is back!" she screamed.
It was then Alaric remembered his dad had gone to the main capital to speak with the Duchess about the war that was about to happen. Better still, he still wanted to prevent it from happening.
The entire Montclair family stood at the entrance of the mansion, while the other workers remained at the side, their expressions filled with joy.
From within the carriage, Rashin stepped out, his hat sticking onto his head as he looked ahead of him.
Even if he was just coming from a battle with no losses, the sight before him was enough to warm his heart.
He moved forward, standing before his wife.
"I’m home," he said with a smile before hugging her.
Alaric, at the side of the group, had a serious expression on his face. Unlike the rest, he could see through his father’s disguise.
It was something he had seen on the faces of the people at the military camp—a forced smile to hide the fate of a fellow comrade.
He wondered, what exactly could his father have discussed with Duchess Meren?
Later that day, Rashin had called Alaric to his office.
Seated on the other side of the table, Alaric calmly waited for his father to address him.
"Alaric. Just to be sure, whatever I tell you right here should not leave this room. Are we clear?" Rashin said with seriousness.
"You have my word," Alaric replied.
With a slightly exhausted grunt, Rashin pressed his hand on his forehead. "Something big is about to happen to our kingdom."
Alaric listened.
"Today was supposed to be the day when the Duke and Duchess came to an agreement to leave the Northerners. Of course, I agreed to make sure the Northerners prove no problem to the Duke’s province. But it was met with a remark. Perhaps what I said was upsetting." Rashin frowned with disdain and exhaustion.
The war the Duke wanted to carry out was due to the fact that he wanted to exterminate the people of the North from living on his land without paying any taxes, despite him being the one who forcefully took their lands.
Duchess Meren wanted to use the Northerners as a means to form bonds with the people of that region so they could help the kingdom grow in terms of military and resources.
Despite Meren making the request to have them under her rule, the Duke still refused to yield.
And what’s even worse, the queen didn’t seem to mind. Or better still, she had not said anything on the matter.
’Well, at least that wasn’t something people like us knew about the matter. I know for a fact there’s something more to the story,’ Alaric whispered in his mind.
Now looking at his father, he asked, "So? Should I take it as you failed to negotiate?"
Rashin could not help but wince a bit. His son’s words definitely hit him hard.
"Yeah," he replied. "Our barony is to get ready for war with the Duke of Arnour in due time."
"Isn’t that quite unnecessary? We don’t even have a well-functioning military. At least, they don’t know that," Alaric said calmly.
"I told them our military strength has increased."
Alaric slammed his forehead. ’This man.’
"And that’s not all..."
’What other information did he leak out now?!’
"Because of the things I told her you have accomplished in the barony, the Duchess would like to have a word with you as soon as possible."
Alaric’s jaw dropped in shock.
’Ah, hell no!’
