Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 85: Parasite
"Alaric!"
Kika burst into the room to see Ava sitting at the edge of the bed where Alaric was lying down.
News about him being sick had spread throughout the mansion. The instant Kika heard it, she ran toward his room, Fiona following behind her.
"Lady Kika..." Ava stood up, bowing her head and moving to the side.
Kika waved her hand and stormed toward Alaric.
Arriving at his side, she grabbed one hand and took a closer look at her son.
"Darling, speak to me. What’s wrong?" Kika desperately tried to understand what was happening to her son.
He could barely say a word back, his breath almost labored.
Something about the sight made it hard for Ava to watch.
"He’s burning up," Kika said with worry. "We need to get a doctor. Doctor!"
Ava immediately raced out of the room.
Kika gently rested her forehead on Alaric’s fist. "Please... say something... anything...."
In that moment, Aurora manifested from within Alaric.
"Mother..." she called out.
Kika raised her head to look at the strange beast woman standing before her.
"W-Who are you?" she asked.
"I am Aurora, your son’s summon. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten about me." Aurora smiled weirdly.
Kika could only look at her son, her mind in total disarray.
"I understand you’re worried about your son. Believe me, no one is more terrified than I am. But I beg you not to call out to him. See..."
Aurora tugged her arms. "He can hear you, but he can’t respond. I think his body has gone into total shutdown."
Kika’s eyes widened as Aurora spoke.
"And I don’t think he has much time."
Kika closed her eyes for a bit. In that moment, the only thing she could hope for was Alaric getting better.
Thankfully, Rashin was on a business trip, meaning he wouldn’t have to worry about the same thing she was.
"Just open your eyes already," she whispered.
Soon, Ava walked through the door. "The doctor is here."
A man dressed in a white long coat with a box in his hand walked into the room.
He didn’t bother saying more as he just went straight to the patient.
"Doctor..." Kika stood up. "Please..." She allowed him.
The doctor gently sat down on the chair, three worried gazes pointed directly at him.
After a few minutes of examining the patient, he finally spoke.
"I’m afraid your son is beyond help right now."
As he said this, all three of the females carried the same shocked expression on their faces.
"What?!"
Ava placed her hand on the doctor’s shoulder as she pulled close. "What do you mean he’s beyond your help?"
"Uh, what I meant is that it’s going to be difficult to bring him out of this state he’s fallen into. Look..."
The doctor opened Alaric’s shirt, revealing his bare chest.
On Alaric’s skin were strange markings, each one eating away at his mana at a rapid rate.
"I’ve never seen anything like this before. It seems to be some kind of parasite, and it’s feasting on his mana. In less than a day, he will be out of mana, and then surviving will be highly unlikely."
"How could he have gotten that? My master has not been near anything of the sort," Aurora spoke from the side.
"If it is indeed a parasite, then perhaps it was something he ate? Intake could also play a major factor in this," the doctor explained.
Though every time he spoke, it felt like the room fell into even deeper sadness.
Kika, who had been standing at the side without saying a word, finally spoke. "What do I have to do for you to heal him?"
The doctor sighed and then began to dig his hand into his bag.
"It might not be that effective, but it should help neutralize the parasites for a short time."
He pulled out a red bandage patch and gave it to Kika.
"In the meantime, I’ll get my team to study more on it. This should last him at least half a day. If you need more, I shall be in my office."
Kika grabbed the patch. "Thank you, Doctor. I’ll be sure to use it."
No longer needed for the time being, the doctor grabbed his bag and exited the room.
The moment he was gone, Kika sat down on the bed and grabbed her son’s arm.
"Please be okay..." she whispered before placing the patch on his hand.
It felt like a cold gust rushed through Alaric’s blood, and every single dark mark on his body began to clear.
And with that development came his awakening.
His eyes opened.
Ava and Aurora, who had been far away a few seconds ago, charged to the front to get a closer look at Alaric.
"Young master! Are you okay now?! Can you see me?"
"Alaric, say something!"
"Open your eyes already!"
The words came from all angles. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
All of a sudden, Alaric slowly opened his eyes. The faces of the women who had been screaming at him were the first thing he saw.
"Uhngggghhh, you don’t have to be so loud," he said draggingly.
A smile formed on all their faces the moment Alaric said a word.
"You’re awake," said Kika, almost tearing up as she cupped Alaric’s cheeks in her hands.
Alaric was still trying to become fully conscious, his eyes scanning the room for a while.
"Do you need anything? Water? Food?"
Alaric grunted a bit before sitting upright. "No, I’m fine," he replied.
Just then, he noticed that his shirt was unbuttoned and there was a strange bandage on his arm.
What happened? My memory is all fuzzy. I recall sleeping right after settling the accounts for the magic threads. After that, I felt a huge burn inside my body. It became hard to breathe. Am I sick? he thought to himself.
His mother suddenly asked...
"Alaric, my son. The doctor told us the sickness you’re battling now is caused by a parasite that’s feeding on your mana. D-Do you remember the last place you ate?"
Alaric was shocked about two things.
One, he was truly sick.
And two, he had a parasite inside him?
...
