Chapter 36: Viscount of Olson.

Four days had passed, and Alaric had already begun building the road that would lead from the mining ground to the barony.

Thanks to the numerous pieces of equipment he had made in replacement of the plate compactor, the workers were able to work twice as fast.

Everything he needed was ready, from the gravel to the cornerstone. With only a week left, Alaric began to speed things up.

"Keep going! Come on! Put your back into it!"

Alaric yelled from the back, watching as each worker used all their might to pick up the homemade plate compactor and slam it on the ground to flatten it.

If anything, swinging the compactor took so much of their strength that building the road itself felt easier.

Alaric knew this... but...

"I’m gonna die!"

A worker cried as he collapsed to the ground, panting heavily while sweating like a dying goat.

"My fingers are numb... please... I NEED WATER..."

Alaric turned his gaze to the worker. "Here, hold this for me."

He handed his stick to Aurora before he began to approach the worker.

"Isiah, darling, why are you on the ground? You’re not done with your spot."

"My... lord... please... I need to rest. I’ll join the next shift, I just..."

Alaric knelt down in front of him, a smile on his face, before placing his hand on the worker’s shoulder.

"You need to rest?..."

Isiah nodded.

"Aww... Sure, there’s no problem with that. If you want to rest, then sure, go for it."

"Oh, thank you, my lord, I promise I’ll—"

"But if you do..." Alaric’s tone suddenly changed, taking a darker turn, "that would mean I’ll have to take 40% of your salary from you. I’m sure you read the contract, silly me, don’t know why I’m repeating it to you. Go on, chump, go take that break."

Isiah could barely maintain any emotion on his face. He grabbed the iron, stood up, and immediately went back to work.

Seeing this, Alaric smiled and walked away, leaving the man swinging the heavy metal while crying and smiling at the same time.

A few hours passed, and the road was already halfway done.

Alaric’s calculations hinted that in the next two days, the road would be completed and ready for use.

All that was left was to find merchants to help with the trades and so on.

And that’s what he did. He and his companions went to one of the places Alaric had never thought he’d ever enter.

The Viscount Elmore Olson.

He was one of the gracious Viscounts under the Duke in the Forgeino region. It was said he ruled over three baronies, Montclair and Neuk being among them.

Although Alaric had never met him face to face before, he had heard stories.

Like how he was the most successful Viscount in all of Virginia—not just the Forgeino region, but all over the kingdom.

In other words, to Alaric, he was the best tool to exploit for his own personal gain.

Seated in the office of the Viscount, Ava stood behind the chair he was settled on, calmly waiting for the Viscount to show himself.

All Alaric did was send a message requesting an audience with him, and to his surprise, he got a response that very same day. Hence why he was now at the Viscount’s mansion.

"Lord Alaric, I advise against this. We both know you’re not good with communication. We should have sent Lady Erica to handle this instead," Ava uttered in a hushed tone.

"Too late, not like we can turn back now," Alaric replied, not even taking a second to look back.

"I believe we can. The Viscount will understand if we tell him an issue occurred, and we will be returning."

Alaric sighed. "Ava, you don’t need to worry. I know how to handle this well."

Before Ava could say a word, the sound of the door opening creaked.

In walked the Viscount of Olson.

Dressed in a decent manner, Olson walked into the office alone.

The moment Ava spotted him, she lowered her head in respect, while Alaric remained seated.

"Ah, the Montclair family?" Olson asked as he took a seat in his chair.

"Montclair, Alaric Montclair," Alaric introduced himself, and Ava instantly followed—

"Ava Isenberg." She bowed.

Olson’s eyes widened a bit, as if he had just seen a rare gold.

"You must be the knight from Her Lordship, Meren."

He pointed.

Alaric was surprised.

"I... am," Ava responded.

"I knew I recognized that red hair. I heard you recently went up the ranks from one of my knights, so where are you now? Silver? Gold?"

"... Diamond."

—Immediate silence.

"Something must be wrong with my ears. I thought I heard you say diamond. Ahah, old age seems to be catching up to me..."

"Oh no, I assure you, your ears work just fine. My knight here is a diamond rank. In the flesh."

Alaric spread his hands to the side.

Hearing it clearly, Olson’s jaw dropped as he couldn’t take his eyes off Ava.

Only two people in Forgeino were known to have entered Diamond rank: the King’s personal knight and now... Ava Isenberg.

"Impossible..." Olson blurted out.

For some reason, Alaric was enjoying the reaction he was getting.

The smile on his face became even more difficult to hide.

"Are you that impressed?" he asked.

The Viscount shot him a sharp look. "You have a diamond rank under you. How are you surprised I’m shocked? What’s worse, I can’t forcefully take her from you since she’s right under Lady Meren too... unless..."

He looked at Ava, a look that reflected the devious idea he had sprouted in his mind.

’Look at this dude... Is he boldly trying to take my knight even though I am sitting right here? The nerve of this olive oil.’ Alaric had a deadpan look on his face.

"Hey girly, you have such extraordinary talent. I see you going places in the future. Not many people can brag about crossing platinum rank. I’m astonished. Why serve a simple barony when you can be me... the Viscount of Olson?"
