Tatehan stared at the words, stunned.

He had not expected to gain this much from just a single battle. The upgrades was overwhelming, each line of text representing a tangible increase in his capabilities, a measurable step forward in his evolution as a fighter.

Twenty Knowledge Points. In one go.

That was insane. His Knowledge stat had jumped from 193 to 213, pushing him well past the halfway point toward the next threshold of 500. He had even gained Repair Points, which at first made him pause. Why Repair Points? He had not fixed anything during the battle or repaired any broken equipment or patched up damaged systems. But then he remembered the role he had played in hacking the mechs, following Torvan’s instructions, cutting the blue wires and feeding the access codes into the system.

That had been a form of technical work, a contribution to the salvage operation that the System apparently deemed worthy of recognition.

And honestly? It was well merited. Without his cooperation, those mechs would still be sitting in the base, useless and abandoned.

The upgrades to his abilities were also really cool and completely unexpected. He had anticipated maybe one or two of them leveling up based on how much he had used them during the fight, but all of them upgrading at once? That was new. That had never happened before.

And then:

Level 14. [+2!!]

Tatehan had leveled up. Not just once, but twice. That was a new achievement, something the System had flagged as significant enough to warrant the extra exclamation marks.

He had gone from Level 12 to Level 14 in a single battle.

That was absolutely unprecedented.

Hell yeah!

———

Two hours after the successful mission, Tatehan lay on his bed, shirtless, just resting.

The room was quiet, the lights were dimmed, casting soft shadows across the walls, and Tatehan stared up at the ceiling, his arms folded behind his head, his breathing slow and even.

The little aches in his body: the bruises, the strained muscles and the spots where impacts had gotten through his armor’s defenses, were already healed, thanks to his Partial Regeneration ability. The dull throb that had been heating in his ribs was gone.

The tightness in his shoulder from that awkward roll he had done to avoid a plasma blast had faded. Even the faint burn on his forearm from where a kinetic round had grazed him was nothing more than a memory now.

His body was whole again. Ready for whatever was next.

But his mind was still processing everything that had happened.

Tatehan closed his eyes, letting the events of the battle replay in his head like a highlight reel. The initial assault, the chaos of combat and the roar of explosions and the clash of weapons.

The way Bjorn had fought, brutal and relentless, his warhammer crushing enemies like they were made of paper. The way Lyra had moved, teleporting across the battlefield, her gun firing precise, devastating shots. The way Riven had dodged attacks with that uncanny predictive awareness, always one step ahead of the enemy.

And then there was him.

The Knight!

He had lived up to his name on that battlefield.

He had fought like never before, y’know this aggressiveness, pure aggressiveness.

Tatehan hadn’t fought in this way before. The only similar fight to this one was the encounter with the 50 something shadow goblins back at the wastelands, that had been one of the few times he fought an army of something.

And then, he had done so in a sort of relaxed manner. Like he was having fun while fighting for his life at the same time.

But with this battle, he wasn’t having an fun doing it, sure there were times that felt cool..., but it had been one of brutal survival and sticking to the plan.

And eventually, if was a successful one. They had taken both bases, captured the battle commander, seized a massive arsenal of weapons, and crippled the Obscuron’s expansion efforts in the North. They had suffered casualties though. Some fighters who had gone into the battle and had not come back, but the mission itself had been a resounding success.

And he had been a part of it. Not just a participant, but a key player!

He thought about the near-death moments, the times when things had gotten too close, when he had felt the cold edge of mortality pressing against him. And as he replayed the battle in his mind, he realized there had only been one real moment where he had genuinely thought he might die.

When those twenty soldiers had mounted on him, trying to tear him apart.

He had been on the ground, his armor absorbing their attacks, their hands clawing at him, their weapons raised, their voices shouting in triumph as they thought they had finally brought down the Knight.

For a brief, terrible second, Tatehan had felt the weight of their bodies pressing down on him, the sheer force of their combined assault threatening to overwhelm his systems.

But then his Kinetic Absorption Armor had saved him.
